Well, I did find a website run by very experienced waterfowl keepers who
stated that the Panacur 10% (the one that was used) should only be given to
geese up to 10 kg (Enid was more like 6 kg) in 0.5 ml dose.
Hmmm. Now how to approach this with my vet? How to say "I think you
overdosed my goose on wormer and that's what ultimately caused her death?"

Not yet. I've phoned and left messages three times to ask about the results
of the post mortem as Shylock had become depressed and ill and I needed to
know if Enid might have had anything contagious that I could treat. I've had
no reply.
> Lots and lots of purrs for Shylock.
I'm sad to report that he passed away also and was buried in his beloved
orchard tonight.
I need to know what Enid had, if it was something she could have passed to
Shylock I needed to know sooner, her post mortem was 16th April. Okay,
Easter intervened that would slow things up, but Enid was improving until
she was wormed, and seizure is a sign of Panacur o/d.
I suspect my vet is avoiding me.
It's awful to be without any geese as I've had them for many years. They
are very intelligent.
I loved it when I went down the path towards the orchard in the morning and
the geese would hear me coming and shout to me to let them out of their hut
*right now*
I loved it when they went obediently into their hut at night because I'd
taught them that.
Geese are brilliant and I miss them a lot already.

I'm so very sorry to hear about Shylock. :o(
If it were me, I'd be over there in person discussing my *concerns*.
They can't avoid you then. Having said that, I'm the
nightmare-owner-from-hell - and I was even worse in the USA after the
vet talked about declawing....

So sorry - many commiserations. RIP Shylock, the many people who'd
learned about you will miss you.
Once I had a small lake beside my farmhouse and Canada geese would wing
in to overnight there. They were mostly quite unafraid of me and I could
get very close. They were obviously great characters and I can see how
you'd miss your very own near-pets.
I hope after the necessary period of mourning Shylock II and Portia (?)
will grace your establishment.
As for the vets, yes they're looking increasingly guilty and I'd
certainly be withholding payment (or further payment if you've begun
instalments) until a very full face-to-face explanation of the autopsy
has been provided. But then, like Helen, I'm a "difficult customer" and
not afraid of confrontation when I think I have good reason.

Ah, well, you see, I am normally not a difficult customer at all as I've
been pretty well happy (apart from minor hiccups) with this vet practice
since I was a child and took my rabbit there ;-)
They have done sterling work for me over the years, available 24/7 every day
of the year and did an emergency spleen removal on my dog and saved her life
on a Bank Holiday.
I'll wait and see what the explanation is. It's probably not worth falling
out with them over a goose but if Enid's death was eventually caused by
wormer o/d I expect them to hold up their hands to it and ensure it doesn't
happen again.
There is more to it than this though, otherwise Shylock wouldn't have died.
I shan't be satisfied until the vet gets to the bottom of it and gives me a
reason.

I'm so sorry, Tweed. Honks for Shylock & Enid, an dmay they enjoy their time
at Rainbow Bridge.
Please make absolutely sure that our vet knows about Panacur even if its
just so that it doens't happen to another goose.
Purrs to you too.

Oh this is awful :((((
I feel terrible for you and definitely the vet needs to get you
results. If it were here, with the big bird flu scare, I bet you could
get the law to lean on them.
I'm so very sorry about Shylock :(((((((*****

I'm so sorry to hear that, the place must seem very empty without any geese.

If he is avoiding you maybe it's because he feels guilty, not that that's
any excuse. I hope you find the cause of Enid's death so when you get more
geese you can know you've done all you can.

Is the vet that treated Enid the same one that treats the cats? If not, and
he refuses to answer your questions, I'd be inclined to sue.

It does. I still expect to see them every time I go down to the orchard :-(

> If he is avoiding you maybe it's because he feels guilty, not that that's

It certainly feels like he's avoiding me, but I am just one owner who thinks
that my concerns should be foremost in his mind. Of course, that isn't so.
Finding time to phone me about a bird that is already dead is probably low
on his list of priorities in a busy practice where he's likely to be
otherwise engaged now, operating, saving lives, visiting etc.
> I hope you find the cause of Enid's death so when you get more
> geese you can know you've done all you can.
I won't get any more without knowing what killed them both. Something in
the soil? Geese like to eat soil. Were they poisoned in some way? By
neighbours? I hope not and I doubt it. By eating a poisonous plant? I
have looked all over the orchard and I cannot see any harmful plants.
I can't find any goose diseases on the net that fit the symptoms either.
Shylock was showing neurological symptoms near the end.
I just don't know what it could have been, so I'll have to wait until I get
the pm report, however long it takes.
> Is the vet that treated Enid the same one that treats the cats?
It's a 6 vet practice I've used for megayears as they are the only mixed
practice (do farm animals too) near here and this particular vet hasn't
treated my cats as yet.
>If not, and
> he refuses to answer your questions,
He'll have to answer my questions eventually because I am not paying Enid's
bill until I *get* an answer. Or maybe he thinks that because he offered to
get the post-mortem done free of charge that I am not entitled to know the
results because I didn't pay for it.
A 220 pounds. 400 dollars-ish, vet's bill resulting in a dead goose in the
end.. I certainly think I deserve to know the post mortem results for that.
>I'd be inclined to sue.
I don't want to go down that route, Adrian. If an animal dies the initial
reaction is to want to sue the vet for not saving it. This is a grief
reaction which vets are prepared for from dog, cat and horse owners.
It will all come to light in the end. Eventually the post-mortem results
will show what caused Enid's/ maybe Shylock's death and I will be glad to
know in case whateveritwas would be a risk for any new geese.
I will leave it two more weeks and if I don't hear I will contact one of the
senior partners. I shan't let it rest until I know. Nothing like this has
ever happened before, the last goose that died here was 21 years old so I
know it's nothing that I'm doing (or not doing.)

You are right about demanding answers from the vet or the senior
partners and not paying the bill before that.
