Maybe no one will mind me saying that while I have been away from
RPCA, I have not been able to forget (<VBG>) people and cats whom I
came to grow fond of when I regularly posted here.  Therefore when I
returned a few days ago, it was great to see many familiar names.

Not all of ours have them and some have several.  The one that stands
out though was Sumo's when he was younger and hadn't put on what I
call his 'tomcat weight', that muscle that cats put on after their
bone structure has reached full size.  He was such a skinny little
thing that DH used to call him "Tiny Heinie".

I like Sumo for a chubby cat (we have three of them with less
imaginative names). I also like the name of our daughter's 21 pound
kitty - Sherman (after the tank). And earlier at our house there was
dear old Fatty-bum - who before she ballooned was at times Hellcat,
Irving, and Irvingette when we discovered she was a girl.

Depends on whether you consider "Get out of there!" a nickname ;)

I have one cat, Persia.  I've been calling her Rumblebug (she rumbles when
she purrs) for a while.  Boo boo has recently started coming out of my mouth
for no discernible reason, but she doesn't seem to mind :)  Of course
Sweetie and Pretty also seem to fit her.

Tigers nickname is "Moosh-Moosh". He got this because when he was a

of "moosh" sound.

Let's see.... we don't use nicknames all that much, I think. Both girls
are usually refered to as girlies, Issa is never called his real name.
Of course our older has such an unusual name, that's pretty much all we
call him.

Xoxo - Xoxodoodle

Luna - Girlie, Princess, Mamushka, Babalushka

Issa - Lardbutt, Good boy, Sweet boy

Basho - Booshoo, Moonchooleetoh (sounds like that anyway)

Natasha has the obvious nickname of "Tasha". She's also known as
"Madame Wetfeet" because she's always drinking from her water bowl
with her feet (puts her feet into her water bowl then licks them off)

I wonder why one earth they do that. I've had several that do it. But Tommy
really takes the cake - he has to splash the water out of the bowl with a
paw several times before he'll drink any, and because of him I end up having
to refill the bowl about three times more often than I would if he'd just
drink the damn water like everyone else!

I think it's just one more example of them thinking they're people.

Something else Tasha used to do was to pick up a piece of dry cat food
with one paw(1), and then dip it into the water before eating it. Of
course, 9 times out of 10 she'd drop the food into the water before
she managed to dip it, and then she'd refuse to fish it out. Lots of
water changing and bowl cleaning went on during the years she was on
that kick!

(1) As near as I could tell, she was picking up her dry food by
hooking it with one or more claws - not pushing the claw into the food
but hooking them around the food, kind of like very sharp tongs <g>

could be worse. One of my 'tiels refuses to use the bird bath. I ended
up putting two water bottles on the cage. She takes a bath about once
a week, empyting a bottle each time. I always know when she takes a
bath, since they get fresh water each night. I especially know if I
happen to be sitting in the recliner at the time. The bird bath is
semi-enclosed, but since she refuses to use that she splashes water
all over using the bottle and the recliner is next to the cage.

Bandit does the dip and lick, but Demi also "touches" the water first before
drinking (Jessie and Sammy both love to drink from running faucets).  I
think it's because they can't see where the surface of the water is and
don't want to stick their faces too far down into it.  Cats see best by
detecting motion, so when the surface of the water is disturbed they can
judge where to stick their tongues.

Because Bandit does the dip and lick, I have to change the water and scrub
the bowl every time I see litter in the bottom!

I wasn't going to answer this thread at first, because I speak Swedish
to my cats, and so their nicknames are in Swedish. But here they are,
translations follow when possible.

Frank: Flanky-Lanky, Franken (the Frank), Flanken (the Flank), gubben
(literally:old man, but often used as an endearment for male children),
pojken (boy), kissen (kitty), kisse-missen (kitty in two ways),
gubbeli-gubben

Frank's tail is called the Killer Tail (in English)

Nikki: gumman (same as gubben, but female), missan (kitty), misse-kissen
(same as kisse-missen but the other way around), lilla flickan (little
girl), lillan (little girl again), rultan (ermm, 'fluffy' girl),
rultan-tultan (fluffy toddler girl), stjärn-öga (star-eyes), tefatsöga

It starts out like good, put a b instead of the d, and then add and -en.

Pardon my ignorance, but in an earlier message you said you spoke
Swedish to your cats. IIRC you live in Finland, right? Is there no
"Finland language"? (they speak German in Germany, French in France,
??? in Finland)

The majority of Finns speak Finnish, but we're a minority of around 6%
who speak Swedish as our first language. Finland used to be under
Swedish rule off and on from the 12th century to 1809. And the language
thing is not so simple, yes, they speak German in Germany, but there are
also language minorities, like a huge Turkish-speaking minority, as well
as other language minorities. Finland has two official languages,
Finnish and Swedish, which means we Swedish-speakers have e.g. our own
schools and we have the right to get official information in Swedish
etc. IIRC, Canada based its language legislation on that of Finland.

Not when he's hanging off my hair, his most favorite leisure activity in

there's something in the theory of relativity about that, but what do I

My blessed Vanilla (love-cat of my life and now RB) was a tiny pure
white but fierce kitty. My Sister named her "The Nilla-nator".

My big grey tabby Dupree (RB) was nicknamed "Debris" of course.

And my huge orange fuzzball "RJ" has several nicknames -- "Fuzzface"
"Fat Boy" "Knucklehead" "Fuzz-bucket" etc. He loves anything and all
attention so it doesn't matter what you call him.

Arthur is Monster Mog. He's not all that big really but is convincingly
weighty.
Stirling's name is already a nickname. His full name is Sir Stirling
Schnozzbiter the Silly. If you'd ever met him, you wouldn't have to ask...
Violetta doesn't really have a nickname but I always greet her "Ciao
bella!"

Lilith Kitten is "bubbe bubbe belly furs" or "kittenhead"

Capt. Midnight is "bubbe bubbe black furs" or "buster bubbe"

Kitty Schottland is "bubbe bubbe tortie furs" or "moggie"

Scrappy (RB) was "infinite kitty" or "Madame PussPuss"

Spook (??) was "Mister Spook" or "the professor" (after the late great Scott Muni)

Tony - Tony Bolony, Antonio Bolonio, D*mnit Tony, Fuzzbutt, If You Don't

The Stripey Thing - originally named George, so he answers to that, also
called The Orange Stripey Thing and The OST - and he'll answer to
anyones name because he figures there is something being handed out.  In
fact, he'll come more consistently if I call Tony than if I call him.
and he KNOWS his name.

Matareka - Mattie, Mattie the Cattie, Squirmy, Squirmy Wormie
