wafflycat - 10 Apr 2006 17:16 GMT At least that's what my three think of me.
On Saturday we were in South Wales, as Nathan was riding an event (round 2 of Rudy Project time trial series). Whilst in the Welsh Valleys we went to see Vernon's daughter and her parter. They have a cat: Charlie. Charlie is an absolutely sweet and entirely mad black & white boy cat of about 18 months old. So when we got back to deepest rural Norfolk, there was mucho sniffing by felines and looks of *disgust* that spoke volumes... "We *know* you've been making a fuss of a strange cat...."
I am forgiven, though, as Waffles brought me a vole yesterday.
Nathan won the time trial :-)

Funny, my guys never seem to mind when I meet another cat, just very interested.
Now if I brought it *home* . . .

Monique Y. Mudama - 10 Apr 2006 19:37 GMT > Nathan won the time trial :-) Congrats!
I got back on my bike this weekend. First time this year. Two thoughts:
1) Owwwww, my sitbones hurt!
2) Oh, how the mighty have fallen. (Okay, I was never mighty, but I was stronger than this!)
As for cats, Oscar doesn't seem to care if I've been playing with other animals. As long as they don't come into the house.

Mudama - 10 Apr 2006 22:39 GMT >> 1) Owwwww, my sitbones hurt! > Need to get buns of steel again ;-) It wasn't so bad going on a little test ride Saturday. The trouble was when I got on my bike *again* on Sunday! I tried "riding" without touching the seat for a while, but eventually the pain in my thighs from holding that position outvoted the pain in my tush from sitting. Always does.
Today I feel kind of like someone kicked me repeatedly on my tender parts! (Fortunately not *those* tender parts -- yay for cut-out saddles.)
>> 2) Oh, how the mighty have fallen. (Okay, I was never mighty, but >> I was stronger than this!) > > I *know* that feeling! Every season. (Probably because I am a definite fair-weather rider, and tend to show off my sloth ancestry during the winter.)
A guy riding by me (granted, it was my second lap of the trail) while I was stopped, wheezing, offered up, "This sure is a long climb!" Really, of course, it isn't. I offered up, "It wasn't a long climb last year!"

If we are down that way again, I'll drop you an email in advance. If we are there for cycling, it's all very cycling intense and not exactly relaxing. Working back from the start time of Nathan riding, we work out a timetable literally down to when he eats before an event and what he drinks... and at what time... he takes his cycling very seriously these days and his improvements are starting to show. But it would be good to see you. The event at the weekend was based around Llandeilo, and we met up with Vernon's daughter Michelle (she works in Cardiff). Not this weekend, but the following it's up to Doncaster (ish) and after that it's Devon... When he's doing an event, I mentally cycle every pedal stroke round the course - I cycle to the start & watch him off, then I pootle over to the finish & wait for him to cross the finish line and in the waiting period, I fret.... and worry... and hope he doesn't puncture, etc., etc.. In Wales there are hills and I don't do hills, but I did a few of the inclines in Welsh valleys at the weekend :-)

Anywhere near your neck of the woods then? How hilly is it?? Will I have to stand behind Nathan & give him a good thrashing to get up the hill??

It's gorgeous round there. Quite hilly.... All Phil's family come from the Tavistock area for generations back. If you want somewhere to have a really nice pub meal, go to the Blacksmith's Arms in Lamerton. Their steaks are *the* best I have ever eaten, (and that includes some gorgeous, soft-pillow type steaks I had in the USA once.) Alternatively, get some Cornish (or Devon) pasties from a baker in Tavistock and eat them while sitting in the town square. Nearly as nice :-)

I am sure they do other things as well as the sumptuous steaks.... When we go to Tavistock we stay at April Cottage: http://www.s-h-systems.co.uk/a10162.html
A very cosy, traditional stone cottage, friendly owners, very convenient (2 mins walk) from Tavistock town centre. Nice breakfasts too. Just FWIW, no connection other than happy customer, etc. :-) it is on a fairly main road though.

That's when I discovered it was no smoking ......So I set out to walk to civilisation, which was how I nearly got killed. I walked down country lanes with no pavements, in a black coat, in poor light and had to cross a motorway!
Still the pub I finally found was lovely!

Lesley - 12 Apr 2006 14:42 GMT > Which just goes to prove, smoking's bad for you. ;-) I don't know I suppose you could argue that I got about six miles vigorous walking from it....
The best bit was getting to the B&B and asking if I could call home to let Dave know I had arrived and to talk to the cats. So I was shown to a phone which had a noticeboard next to it. There was a bit paper labelled "Things to do in Ringwood" and on the board there was a single card from the local Methodist church....

As to how hilly, I can't vouch for the actual course itself but the word "Dartmoor" says it all. Think Lake & Peak Districts and you'll get the idea - so bring your best cane for Nathan :)
Keep in touch on the timing etc. and if I can I'll safari over the border to your marshalling area (or whatever) to say hello - I appreciate you'll be really busy.

Vernon's booked a B&B somewhere near and what we aim to do is go down the day before and get Nathan to cycle the course *slowly* as this gives him a chance to get to know the topography of the course, hazards etc. without wearing out his legs for the next day. The actual event is first off at 0900hrs on the Sunday morning. Juniors are usually off early in the scheme of things and Nathan 'doesn't do' mornings, so that should be 'interesting'... In the world of time trials, Saturday starts are afternoon ones and Sunday starts are always morning ones... often very, very early ones. We'll not be marshalling formally, but we (Vernon & I) keep an eye on proceedings... in my case this involves mentally pedalling every inch of a course and looking at my watch with a frequency that might indicate a certain obsessiveness ;-)

Keep me posted on dates etc. & I'll look forward to meeting y'all - might only be able to bring the d-pet for a cuddle though, 2/3rds of the masters don't take kindly to motoring.

Wish I could help you on the cat thing, but my crew think I'm a traitor if I pet one of the other cats in this house. The jealousy thing gets a little crazy sometimes.

Yesterday when I came home, I held out my hands to the cats to sniff, as always. But they kept sniffing for a long time - finally I remembered that I'd petted the dog next door on my way in.
It's so funny - if I pet animals from far away, they don't seem to care. But if I pet a neighborhood animal, they can't get enough sniffing.

Nathan has Oakley Zeroes for his TTs and he'll be wearing the RP Rydons he won at the weekend (amongst the other stuff he won) for 'normal' cycling.
Thanks to cost of offspring's *serious* kit, his poor mother is reduced to having the cheap stuff :-)
