Dinner party dilemma (not OT)

Well, we're having a couple over for dinner tomorrow night.  I'd like it to
be very nice since we're just getting to know them and they had us over for
an extremely lovely dinner a month ago or so.

Of course the dilemma is the dining room table.  We'll have appetizers in
the kitchen and then it will be time to move into the dining room.  We can't
possibly do up the dining room table in advance though because of ... OTIS!
He is a crazy tablecloth puller and explorer.

It's okay though - we regaled them with Otis stories last time.  Fred is
convinced they're only coming over to see the cat ;-)

Why don't you place Otis (*temporarily*) in a bedroom -- just until you move
to the dining room and don't have to worry about "feline exploration"?

Well, besides the loud yowling scaring the guests, there's a chance Otis
might come out of the bedroom, jump in the dinner table and pee on
someone's plate. :)

How about putting him in his carrying cage until dinner is over?  He
certainly will be offended, but the dinner table would be safe.  MLB

Same problem, I would think, only louder. :)

I'm totally w/Fred! If you lived anywhere near me, *I'd* come over
"to see Otis" (not to mention sweet Chester) and you wouldn't even
have to feed me! Otis "has a rep", thanks to rpca and Susan.....

Hey, I don't live anywhere near Otis but I fully plan to visit him some
day. :)

Any time Victor!  After we renovate, we'll have nice spare room quarters

Dennis and I have had the honour of meeting the infamous Otis.  However, we
must have caught him on a good day because he was perfectly well behaved and
lovely :-)

Well, I haven't met Otis live, but I have seen him on a webcam, and the
only thing he did was practice the cello. ;o)

Thank you - he would, of course, pull a b*st*rd cat trick and appear
completely normal like he did when Britta and Dennis visited!  You're all
welcome to come and pay homage at any time ;-)

Yeah, I really don't know what all the fuss is about.  Otis is a perfectly
normal and well behaved cat!  I am going to need proof from other visitors
to change my opinion ;-)

I may try that if he seems sleepy.  I worry about his destructive tendencies
otherwise - like he might pee in the bedroom or throw himself at the door.

This seems so funny to write after hanging out with him this morning in his
totally docile sleepy phase.  He kept asking to go under the covers,
snuggling up, purring, and putting his front paw on my face.  What a sweetie
(sometimes)!

Could you set up the plates and dinnerwear on a side table in an
attractive arrangement before the guests arrive? Then you'd just have
to transfer them to the table and it would only take a few minutes...

Half the time when we had guests my mother wouldn't set the table till
they got to our house anyway - it's not like it's a huge task if you
know where everything is :)

Thank you!!!!!  That's *exactly* what we'll do.  I hadn't thought of that.
It will hardly take a minute if I stack everything on the side table, whip
on the table cloth and then serve.  Thanks!

While these people are unbelievably empathetic and interesting and wonderful
conversationalists, I admit that I'm a little intimidated by the company
that *they* keep.  He's president of a big oil company and she's a
physician.  I expect that they're entertained very well on a regular basis.
The prospect of the messy dining room table just pushed me over the edge!

... and then I went a planned a totally vegetarian meal again.  I hope that
it is okay.  I have made appetizers of smoky black bean dip with pumpkin
seeds, guacamole, shittake tofu pot stickers with ginger sesame dressing,
roasted yam and garlic soup with lime and ancho chiles, black bean goat
cheese quesadilla with homemade salsa, and a side salad with basil
vinaigrette.  Not your standard fare and I hope they like lime, cilantro,
spice and sesame, since there's an awful lot of it.

I'm kind of nervous.

I'd love to hear how it goes. Just remember, oddly enough, people seem to be
just as intimidated by people who can play instruments. It doesn't even seem
to matter if  you aren't a top player (like I know you are). If they don't
play they are just kind of awe struck that you can do something which is, to
them, so incomprehensible. I've discovered this over and over. Besides,
maybe they just like being with fun people (which I hear tell is not what
many of the folk in "upper eschelon big business" are a lot of the time -
and dinners are often more about business that socializing. So this may
really be a big deal for them because they are going to just be having a
"couples date"!)

One of my favorite restaurants in Austin is vegetarian, south Indian
food I think. Hmmm.... fried cauliflower....

Yum - probably in chickpea flour too?  I love it with mint/yogurt sauce
myself!

Everything on the menu except the quesadillas were from the Rebar cookbook!
And they were GOOD!!

The couple may have met a lot of very important people, but they sure
never met such special kitties as Otis and Chester. I think the dinner
will go just great.

Certainly understandable, but I wouldn't assume that just because they
have high-profile jobs, they have particularly demanding expectations.

Did you save us some Susan  you got me hungry now

This is all I had for lunch   made some cucumber, baby spinach leaves,
carrots
slivers, almond slivers, chicken basted in teriyaki - basil sauce  all
wrapped up in piece of romaine lettuce  held together with a avocado -
mayonnaises mustard sauce.  It is followed by tortilla chips that I made
myself  with a dipping sauce of mild mexi - ranch sauce mixed with Monterey
jack, extra sharp new York style cheddar cheese and pico de Gallo  with just
a hint of very mild lightly smoked chipotle that I blended up together.
Sweet Pickle wedges on the side

I made some cold to follow it a nice fruit salad loaded with red and
white seedless grapes and strawberries which we went this week and picked
fresh this week; they are in season here.  To drink I made fresh squeezed
lemonade with raspberries in it.

Can you tell I have some time on my hands this afternoon.  Would you
believe that the furballs did not even pay any attention to my lunch. When I
was making it they all jumped up took one sniff and went back to the
sunlight.  I guess they did not like the sauce

Your menu has me hungry now   got to look for something to eat

.. thank you for asking!    The food was *really* good.  I felt badly for
the husband though because he had just got off a plane with a cold after
being on the road for a week.  Ugh.  What a lousy night to go out for
dinner.  Not only that, he is allergic to cats!!!!   Horrors.

The boys were locked in the basement after Chester jumped on the table
several times.

All in all, the food was good but it seemed that the husband wasn't in the
best form for going out, which was too bad.  It took hours and hours and
hours and HOURS to slice and dice everything.

They both enjoyed it.  As a cooking woman, she was amazed by the amount of
prep time she figured was involved!  He enjoyed it as well and they were
still both lovely company.  I just know what its like to end up out on a
