Shylock's new wife Enid is very ill and is in hospital at the vets as we
speak. She seems unable to eat or drink. and has to be re-hydrated, x-rayed
and blood-tested. The vet thinks it's possible that she's maybe ingested
some metal, like a nail or staple from the soil (earth) as geese do
sometimes like to nibble soil.
It's going to cost megabucks, minimum £50. Now if I was sensible I would
say "hey, I can buy another goose for much less than that!" and tell him to
just put her down. I can't though because Shylock loves her now and I don't
want him to be bereaved again.
She is very, very ill, please purr for her recovery for Shylock's sake as
geese are very attached to their spouses and suffer bereavement in a similar
way to us, apparently.

Yes, he's only had her since last year around Julyish, he lost his mate Honk
the day before I went in hospital in May and we had to wait a while until I
was up to looking after them again to get him a new wife.
The trouble with geese is that they don't show signs of illness until they
are almost dying, and I'm not holding out much hope for Enid and neither
does the vet. We'll have to see how it goes. Please keep purring for her.
She is a real sweetie.
Shylock was looking for her when I put him in his hut tonight as they
usually go in it together. By tomorrow when he fully realises she isn't
there he will start shouting his head off. :-(

I heard from the vet's surgery this evening that Enid is still with us which
is better than I thought as I wasn't very hopeful yesterday.
She's is on a drip which has re-hydrated her and she is now a bit brighter,
apparently, and has had antibiotics. She's had "a little walk around" and
has actually managed to drink for herself which she was too weak to do
yesterday. She has not eaten yet, although she has "played around" with
some food.
Her bloodwork has been done and sent away to a lab, and she was x-rayed
today but I shan't know the result until tomorrow as the vet that is looking
after her wasn't working this afternoon.
So, she has improved a little, enough to drink properly, your purrs must
have kept her alive as I was expecting a phone call to say she'd died
overnight.
I shan't know her prognosis until the results of the bloodwork and x-ray
come back. The big question is "Why has she suddenly not been able to eat
and drink and can anything be done about it?"
Maybe she got a bacterial infection somehow, if so the antibiotics should
sort her out now she's improving.
Why do I always feel it's my fault if my animals/birds get ill? Enid is
kept in exactly the same way as Shylock & his first wife, Honk - and she
lived to be 21.
Please continue to purr for Enid. She was so weak when I picked her up to
take her to TED yesterday that she couldn't cope with the trauma of me
catching her, and fainted. I thought she was dead and I'd killed her by
picking her up. She is very shy with me, still.
She's not out of the woods yet as it all depends on what the underlying
problem is.
Thanks for your purrs and prayers.

Shouting all day :-( and bereft.
My neighbours are very good fortunately and never complain at my crowing
cockerels and it's unlikely that Shylock's screeching will be a problem
either as I tolerate their screaming youngster who sometimes keeps me awake
in the night as their house is attached to mine.

I've been following your thread, Tweed, and sending good thoughts for

I sure hope she continues to improve.

The other night I made a delivery which had a note attached saying to
honk the horn when I arrived and not enter the yard. Usually this
means they have dogs, but when I arrived a lady came out and came to
the gate of the locked chain link fence carrying a plywood shield.
When I asked about her dogs she laughed and said she didn't had any.
Turns out the locked gate and shield were because she had a "attack"
rooster.

I have seen mockingbirds, who probably don't weigh more than a few
ounces, totally intimidate cats. One once backed my father's cat into
a corner, underneath a lawn chair, then strutted back and forth on the
ground only about 18 inches (roughly half a meter) in front of the
cat, swearing loudly at the cat. The cat refused to go out that
particular house door for a couple of days afterwards. The same bird
once pecked me on top of the head as it flew by.
