I'm cat-sitting this weekend, for a couple of cats I've gotten to know
fairly well over the past couple of years, since I've had this client.
Her two cats are Sula, a small black girl cat, and Buddha, a big, fluffy
gray and white male. (He looks a bit like a very large Smudge.)
I hardly ever see Sula when I sit for them, because she loves the
outdoors. Even in this weather, which I would expect a cat to hate (it's
been raining for weeks and weeks), she spends most of it outside. Tonight
she came in, ate a bit of the wet food I put down for her, and almost
immediately went back to the door and meowed to be let out. She has places
to go and things to do, apparently.
Buddha had gotten into some kind of trouble - a cat fight, maybe - and
he had an absess on his back. His mom had taken him to the vet and gotten
drains put into the area (they've since been removed), and he's still on
antibiotics. He's doing OK, but has to be kept inside until he's fully
recovered.
Of course I had to take on the evil job of giving him his squirt of
medicine twice a day, so he hides from me when I arrive. But he's really
a pretty docile cat, and I've been able to reach him in his hiding place,
grasp him by the scruff of the neck (not to lift him, but to subdue him),
and slide him along the floor until he's out in the open, and then give
him the nasty stuff. Then he runs off in a big huff. I place his wet
food on the floor nearby and then I go into another room, so he can feel
free to eat and get rid of the taste of the medicine.
Tonight, after I gave him his medicine and he'd run under the bed looking
all outraged and indignant, I decided to go sit in living room and watch
TV for a little while. Within about 3 minutes, he came trotting into the
living room, jumped onto the couch, and then climbed on my lap. I had his
brush ready and started brushing his head, which he *loves*. Suddenly, the
evil medicine-squirter has become his best friend! :) He got all squirmy
and purry and let me brush him everywhere, even on his belly (he kneaded
the air when I did that). So I hung out with him for about an hour, brushing
and petting him while he purred up a storm. He's really a sweetie!

Awww.... I wish you lived nearby so you could cat-sit our crew. They
would certainly love you!

Same here. Good cat-sitters are in very short supply, and my only choice is
to
board Rusty at the vet.

Thanks! :)
I wish I could support myself doing cat-sitting - I really love the
"people" I work with! :)

Then again, if you brought out a brush, you would not be allowed to put
it down for hours and hours, so you might not like them that much. :)

Aww, what a sweet kitty! I knew a cat named Buddha once. He was an
enormous fat white cat.

He sounds lovely. Hope he'll be easier to medicate next time.

He must be quite a character!
I had a dwarf Russian hamster named Buddha. Well, that was one of the
many names we gave him, on account of his prodigious belly. I think
he had a glandular problem. He seemed to have more going on upstairs
than any rodent has a right to be thinking, which was another reason
Buddha was so appropriate.

Buddha sounds like a real sweetie, I loved hearing about him.
I love the name Buddha for a cat. I've had a new idea for a cat name ever
since coming to Malaysia. Qiblat. That's what the arrow on the ceiling
says that points to Mecca. I guess it must mean Mecca or something. But I
just like the word. It seems kinda bratty catty to me. Perhaps we will
name our next cat Qiblat. LOL! Hope that doesn't offend any Muslims.

His absess (abcess? neither spelling is in /usr/dict/words) area looks
much better. I'm done with the job now, but I was there yesterday, and
he's been cleaning it himself and it just doesn't look as raw. One of the
days I was there, I put a warm, wet cloth on the area to help clean it,
and I think that also helped. Yesterday I had another grooming session
with him while I watched a very obnoxious segment of Oprah.
<side rant> I thought this show was supposed to be sensitive and at
least somewhat intelligent. I was totally offended by the piece they
showed while I was watching - about a child born in Peru with her legs
fused together. It's a fatal condition if the doctors can't separate
the legs - her genitals, including her urethra, are totally embedded
inside, so she can't urinate, among other problems. Anyway, they kept
calling her "deformed" and "the mermaid baby", and playing horror
music whenever they showed her legs. It was totally sensational and
disrespectful to the child and her family. I don't know why I expected
more from Oprah, but this was no different from reading a supermarket
tabloid rag. <end rant>
Back to more pleasant subjects, Buddha thoroughly enjoyed his brushing.
He squirmed, purred, and kneaded the air in approval! :)
