No cats on the desk...

Mark Edwards - 04 Oct 2004 03:49 GMT This is what I tell Buster practically everyday. He'll be sitting on the corner of the bed nearest the desk, and will eye the desk.
I always tell him "No kitties on the desk, not even pretty grey ones." Sometimes I even have to redirect his attention or move him further away from that temptimg corner.
But he has been thinking about this.
I have a couple of short stacks of books on the corner of the desk. The last two nights, I have found Buster sitting atop the books, not the desk...

I never use my table for eating unless I have company, so it accumulates things. For instance, I save my newspapers for recycling, and often let a few days' worth accumulate on the table before taking them out to the recycle bin. The newspapers always go on one corner of the table. Lindy suddenly decided to change my rule to "No cats on the table unless they're on the newspapers." I would find her meatloafing on the newspapers several times. I finally gave up and adopted that rule. Then, of course it kept evolving. Currently the rule is, "No cats on the table if there are dishes or food on it." Since those conditions take place only once or twice a year, we've managed to keep it at that. So far.

Other than that, it's "cat's allowed on top of, under, or inside of whatever he wants". I don't go so far as to open cabinets for him, but if he scoots in while it's open, I tend to leave it open until he decides to come out.

When we have company we opt for reclusing the gang to the studio, where they have their two big cat houses and access to the enclosure. I'm not so much concerned with them showing their bad manners (grin), but with one of them escaping by mistake with guests coming and going.

Enfilade - 04 Oct 2004 14:58 GMT We have a rule about 1. No kitties on the table
and 2. No kitties in laps at the table if there is food on the table.
Kumani and Tyche push rule #1 if they think we're not around. There's always pens and headphones and erasers and other neat stuff to play with on the table.
Smokey pushes #2, just in case we aren't gonna eat all that.

We also have a rule about no kitties on the desk, but Kumani and Smokey seem to flow from lap to desk to keyboard as if they didn't know what they were doing. Right. Scoop, dump back in lap.

The rule here is, there are no rules. Yesterday, for example, Mum came over for sunday dinner. Nikki likes my Mum, and was uncommonly sociable all the time she was visiting. Nikki lay on the floor by Mum's feet and did 'cute kitty' at her. At one point, she got on the table and flopped down on it. I hadn't set the table yet, though. Mum didn't mind, anyway.

That's so cute! You're lucky your Mom doesn't mind. Mine would freak out. But then again, she's not used to cats.

>That's so cute! You're lucky your Mom doesn't mind. Mine would freak out. >But then again, she's not used to cats. My mother is, and she'd take exception to the cat being on the dining table. She's pretty easy-going about what the cat is allowed to do, except when the cat wants to be on food-prep surfaces [kitchen counter, dining table, etc.] or nosing around a dish a human is actively using.

That's the look I get when I foolishly try to exert my authority as Cat God around here. Keeping cats off the table is hopeless at my place. I have company at every meal. I AM trying to enforce the "No cats on the kitchen counters" rule, however. Cesca was very polite for the first few months I had her, but now she's starting to think maybe the kitchen counter is where it's at. I always scold her, and tell her "CESCA GET DOWN, NOW!!" when I catch her up there, and she jumps down, looking sheepish, so maybe there's hope. Nina is still too small to jump up there, yet.
