Trap worked - wrong animal!

Well, we know the trap works - it caught the possum that's been coming
around for a couple of months to clean up any leftover cat food.  I had
heard someone describe a possum's defense and had a chance to experience it
tonight - YUCK!!!!!

We let the possum go and hosed down the trap, but I don't know if any
self-respecting cat would enter it now - it *STINKS*!!!

Besides that, the tuna and cat food got overturned and spilled all over the
deck, so there's plenty for the gray cat to scavenge if he does show up
tonight.

*BIG SIGH*

Hmm. Can you douse it with vinegar? You'll get her. I know you will.

Good idea, I'll have to try that - and then hose it down again really,
really well (I don't want the vinegar smell to overpower the smell of the
bait).  I think I'll try going to get some KFC tomorrow since I've heard
that recommended as bait.

I've never trapped anything other than a cat but maybe hose off the
deck and move the trap away from the stink? Hang in there. I
trapped two cats in one night when I got Bonnie. She was extra.
Bonus you could say. Bonus, err, Bonnie.

Oh, and on the night Bonnie was trapped, both Megan AND Arjun Ray
were on the phone with me helping me get them. The other was a b/w
male that had been hanging around my house looking for a home and
since I had a FeLV+ cat, that wasn't going to happen. When Bonnie
showed up in the trap (tiny skinny solid black but older than a
baby kitten) the b/w just needed neutering (he stunk). I couldn't
find a feral community to take Bonnie so I had to socialize her
because she was too tiny to set free after being spayed. And, she
got sick. Megan helped me make posters to hang at work and we got 1
home for 2 strays. Bonus. The b/w male found a home along with
another stray (gray guy; Russian Blue look-a-like) hanging around
here with a great guy I worked with.  :)

LOL - I love those big eyes in "Bonnie and Shamrock and Da Bird"!!  And the
gray cat looks just like the cat I'm trying to trap!!

I'm going to keep trying - I just hope they let me keep the trap until I can
get him/her.  If I don't get him/her tomorrow I'm going to call the lady who
specializes in TNR and ask for her help.

Re: deodorizing trap and area: do you have any oxyclean or the like? That is
supposed to be good for removing odors. Plus, you could try this hydrogen
peroxide/baking soda/dishwashing soap recipe used to remove skunk odor:
This odor remover is made from simple household ingredients:

 a.. 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide

b.. 1/4 cup of baking soda

c.. 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap.

Mix the three ingredients together and use immediately. The chemical
reaction produced from these ingredients lasts only a limited time.
If you use this formula to remove skunk odor from your pet, be sure to rinse
offhim off with water. Do not let the solution soak for more than a few
minutes.

Good luck!

Maybe you could spray the trap with Feliway to make it smell more friendly
to the cat.
Also, you might try draining the tuna before putting it in the trap.  Or
just put in part of the can.
Another good bait is smoked salmon.
Good luck!

Huh?  I thought possums simply "played possum" as a defense
mechanism!  You sure your "possum" wasn't black with a white
stripe down its back and a bushy tail?

Part of playing dead is stinking. The possum does not spray.

Well, I suppose that's a plus (maybe).  The things one
learns on newsgroups!

They don't spray, but they do puke this *really* smelly, yucky stuff as well
as pooping.  It smells just like a dead animal.
