Annie Wxill - 26 Mar 2006 00:35 GMT Ahoy from the boat Genesis. We just spotted our first alligator! It was floating in the shallows with just its beady eyes and two bumpy nostrils above the water. We are almost 50 miles (7 hours) out of Galveston,Texas, heading east on the ICW (Intracoastal Waterway). We will anchor out tonight in a place called Taylor Bayou. We'll keep the kitties inside the cabin, for sure.

> Ooh, good plan. > Marina, Miranda and Caliban. In loving memory of Frank and Nikki. Hi Marina, Actually, an alligator might be able to get onto our swim platform, which is attached to the back of our boat near the water. But it is quite a ways up from there to the deck, and I don't think an alligator would be able to climb up. So, as long as we keep our bodies out of the water, we will be safe from alligators. But, the kitties are staying in the cabin, just to make sure their fuzzy little bodies don't end up in the water. Annie, crew for Rosie and Cinder
Matthew AKA NMR ( NO MORE RETAIL ) - 27 Mar 2006 03:15 GMT I hate to inform you but gators can climb in Florida they something called an alligator proof fence that people use around water fronts it is barbs that are pointed downward to prevent the gator from climbing over the fence. Gators actually can push themselves upwards to get over fences
Plus gators can leap or jump out of the water about 4 or 5 feet http://gatorland.com/shows.html

Hi Matthew, Our journey will take us through Florida. Do you think an alligator can climb a slick fiberglass surface straight up? Even if the surface is rocking?
Just wondering.
Not planning to get close to any alligators, or doing anything to find our. Enough excitement seeing them from a distance. (Shudder)

I realise the chances would be slim, but better safe than sorry. The ooh was for seeing an alligator. I've never met anything that dangerous in the wild. Well, we don't *have* anything that dangerous living in Finland, except bears I suppose, and they're usually more wary of people than the people are of bears.

We've had white-tailed deer on the island. Also elk. Here's a series of some very blurred pictures of a young elk that visited our house some years ago: http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/frankiennikki/album?.dir=ce47&.src=ph It must have been a young one, because it was completely unafraid of us. My sister's macho cat Linus promptly defended the house against the intruder.

I wonder if your elk are the same species we have in N. America ... our elk are supposedly extremely huge (I've been fortunate enough never to encounter one, but my husband very narrowly avoided hitting one on the drive to Arizona) ...
I see a lot of deer on my mountain bike rides (never seen a mountain lion or a bear on the trail, and I'm fine with that trend continuing). The most surreal experience was when I had sat down on the side of the trail for a good cry (long story). A timid deer (I assume a doe) came up to within a few feet of me and kept me company. As soon as I stopped crying, she ran off.

I had a very scary dream last night involving alligators. Several of them. And I was really scared of them, even though everyone around me kind of laughed it off.
At some point I was dangling from a rope over a pond. The rope was swinging and every time I came near the alligator, he tried to chomp me.
I don't know where this dream came from. But maybe I shouldn't have chased my spaghetti dinner with red curry chicken & veggies, just to finish them up.

> I don't know where this dream came from. I hope this last statement was facetious, Monique! :) It seems pretty clear to me where it came from. This thread has been going on for days, and apparently it seeped into your subconcious. It couldn't have been more obvious if you'd dreamed you were on a boat in the Gulf of Mexico. :)

> more obvious if you'd dreamed you were on a boat in the Gulf of Mexico. :) > Joyce Hi Joyce, I'm sorry Monica is having a bad dream because of my post. Isn't there an expression about being able to see the swamp because you're up to your something or other in alligators? Or is it not being able to see the forest for the trees?
Anyway, we are in a boat, but not in the Gulf of Mexico. We are in the Intracoastal Waterway, which is a channel that at this point pretty much parallels the Gulf of Mexico.
I've been without Internet or cell phone access for a few days and have suffered RPCA withdrawal. I've got more adventures to post.

I rememebr going to gatorland and seeing the show and they have the gators jump out of the water like a killer whale does at sea world you learn alot

I remember her telling me that they would come up in front of them to check her out and the other survivors. They had to beat the gators off. The gators smelled the people who died in the plane and wanted the bodies; gators like decaying food they actually take their prey and shove it up under a log and allow it to decay basically to tenderize it to make it easier to eat.
I have been in boats before fishing and been pulling the fish in and the gators come up and snap the fish up. Scares the crap out of you

You never > know how someone's story, or a book or movie or anything might > affect somebody's dreams. That's true. I also think it has a lot to do with your mindset. Probably more than what you're exposed to. If you're stressed out or worried, you'll have bizarre and/or disturbing dreams. The particulars might come from your recent experiences, but that's not why you're having the crazy dreams.

"When you're up to your a.s in alligators, it's hard to remember your initial objective was to drain the swamp." (Couldn't find an attribution.)

It sounds like a scary dream, indeed. If the people who laughed it off were in your dream, well, maybe you were playing a trick on yourself. If they are real people, just ignore them.
Oh, I heard that alligators just love spaghetti chased by red curry chicken.
Sorry, just kidding. Go ahead and ignore me.

> Wow. I didn't know they went that far out! I always think of them as > swamp creatures. Hi Karen, We are not out that far. In fact, part of today, our route was quite a way inland. Part of the time, the channel is dredged through marshes and swampland. Part of the time we will cross a lake or a bay. Sometimes we go under major highways. Or, we can peek over a low embankment and see the Gulf of Mexico. It is an entirely different way to see our country. Today, we did not see any alligators (thank goodness). Cinder enjoys chattering at the birds she sees through the window.
