I AM SO STRESSED

Karen - 24 Mar 2006 04:40 GMT OK, on top of all the mystery pain SH*T, monday my laptop died in the middle of a raging blizzard with a class waiting for me. I went into the raging blizzard to my "day job" office 1/2 mile away and was lucky to make it back. I had to buy a new iBook Tuesday. I had my CT scan this a.m. and I suppose it will be MONDAY before I hear anything. And tonight Sugar threw up a hairball, OK, fine no big deal. Two hours later she began meowing manically and growled when I picked her up from hiding under the bed. I rushed her to the emergency vet and her blood work showed the same thing as back in January suggesting she was mounting some kind of infection. They gave her a shot of baytril to see if we can get a head start on it. She is home, looking miserable but at least she is looking miserable on the couch and not under the bed. I AM SO STRESSED OUT RIGHT NOW I CANNOT TELL YOU. I know other people probably have a lot more to be stressed over. HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT????
Pat - 24 Mar 2006 04:54 GMT > SO STRESSED OUT RIGHT NOW I CANNOT TELL YOU. I know other people probably > have a lot more to be stressed over. HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT???? One thing that has really helped me is remembering that this earthly life, real as it often seems to us, is in fact quite ephemeral. It might even be a test or an exercise for us to learn how to 'rise above it all'.
meee - 24 Mar 2006 05:28 GMT (((((Karen))))) I know the feeling. Usually i ring up and whinge to a friend or my mum, or here!!! Hope you are feeling a bit better. That is a very bad day indeed. Kick back, and have a long hot bath, light some candles and read your favourite book. Turn everything, phone, etc off for a half hour. Just sit back and cuddle your furbabies. I hope you feel better soon...

I"m so sorry, Karen. Sugar will get better, just like she did last time, and so will you. Be good to yourself. Don't take on anything "extra"...just do what you absolutely need to, to get by, until things level out.
Still purring for you...

You've certainly had a bad week, Karen. Lots of purrs and hugs on the way. I don't have any advice on how to handle things. Make sure to cuddle with the cats a lot. Wish I could lend you Caliban for a while. He's a very good stress-reliever. In Finland we have something called Sisu; it's a mixture of chutzpah (sp?), tenacity (= stubborness), courage and plain refusal to give up. I wish you lots of Sisu to get you over this stretch of badness. And purrs for Sugar to feel better.

But you sure don't need all this! And having to buy a new computer on top of all that.
More purrs for your CT scan to give you the all clear!

I know how long the weekend will seem if > you don't. Are you still experiencing pain, btw? Yup. Not as bad, but still pretty annoying. I will say that I think stress exacerbates it. I caved and took one of the pain pills tonight. The chick at the hospital says it takes 3 days, so the earliest I can hope is Monday but I will call the Drs tomorrow and let them know I am EXPECTING a call from them on Monday at the latest.

Sugar seems to be doing much better since the anitbiotic shot. My scans came back normal. So, now I have something to treat IBS. To me that is such a vague thing, but we will see. If I don't feel better by Monday then I have another consultation. They did make it clear they did not think it was cancer, which was a relief all around. I still feel lousy, and it is still really a mystery but that at least seems ruled out. Thanks all soooooo much for your support.

IBS isn't a vague thing at all. A lot of the time it can be treated fairly easily. Sending purrs that is the case for you.
Yes stress will make it worse. But it can generate stress too, so don't feel like it is somehow your "fault" if you stress out.

I think you can control IBS by your diet. Try eating healthier and see whether it makes any difference. Note what you've eaten when you feel bad. Eat food that aids with digestion like ginger, pineapple, and papaya and see if that help. Better yet, consult with a nutritionist or dietician

That's what we're going through in the family right now -- do we try an operation to fix possible scar tissue when an operation might cause more scar tissue? We may end up with a laparoscopic if the things we're trying now (numbing nerves, physical therapy) don't work.

IBS is its own stress in a way. It is also made worse by your stress. I'm on a low fat, no spice, no (haha) stress diet for it and am receiving Paxil for it and social anxiety disorder. It all helps. So does venting. So do cats.

Loads of purrs from us, Karen. I hope things start looking up for you soon! Your poor nerves. Unfortunately, I have no great cures for relieving stress but I like Marina's Finnish word. I was under a lot of stress last fall re my mom's issues and I found that taking a homeopathic remedy called Calms Forte (by Hyland) in the health store that seemed to help take the edge off my tendency to panic without any side effects; it's along the same idea as Rescue Remedy and I heard about the Calms Forte like I did the Rescue Remedy -- from a cat rescue person. I also talked to my friends as well as a counselor. I also tried to take a break from as many obligations/outside extracurricular activities as I was able to. And I tried to do little things for myself like take lavender bubble baths. Hope this helps.

I second a lavender bath. But I suggest using lavender essential oil in your bath rather than a bubble bath. A few drops of the lavender e.o. on my pillow case also helped me sleep. Another essesntail oil I found helpful intimes of stress is neroli. I just sniffed on it and it relaxed me. A few I used a neroli a lot when I lost my job and my father within 2 weeks. I was a basketcase and woke up crying in the middle of the night. Also I remember you mentioned massage helped with your pain. So go for a relaxing massage.
Purrs for you and Sugar.

Then, I realized I didn't want to only fit into sweat pants. Now, I drink lots of Diet Coke.
This last 1.5 years has been probably the worst of my life. It seems that other people are going through great trials, too. There's something going on in the stars, I think.
Putting your attention on someone else who needs it can help. There's always someone else with more problems.
I also just stand outside and watch nature for a few minutes -- and realize the world has not stopped spinning.

I agree that the chocolate part is key, in whatever form. It actually does have chemicals that will make you feel good.

I am constantly stressed, so I'm probably not a good one to give advice, but here are some things that at least temporarily destress me:
A long, hot bath
Going to bed early and getting more sleep -- if you're stressed, you probably need more sleep than you normally do
Spending some time in the sun, not doing anything, just "playing flower" and tipping your face up toward the sun and absorbing all that energy (eyes closed, of course)
If you can afford it, getting a professional massage. There are also neat versions with hot rocks.
Give yourself a break. If you're anything like me, you're stressing over silly stuff sometimes, like having dishes in the sink, or laundry undone, or feeling guilty because you didn't have time to cook a real meal, or eat enough veggies, etc. Try to recognize when you're having these thoughts and let them go. You're exceptionally busy and stressed right now, and you have the right to let some little things slip so that you can focus on the big things. Stress will make you sick.

Well, I prefer the chemical solutions to really bad bad days. When anxiety has a head start. Especially when its the end of the day and there just isn't enough time to use gentler ways of unwinding.
Honest I don't take them very often, but I do have a prescription for Serax. Back when I had to deal I called them my IRS pills. Or my MIL pills as the case may be.
Granted a martini would be the drug of choice for many but I don't tolerate alcohol well and it isn't a great way to show up for an IRS audit.
If I wake up feeling that stressed for no particularly good reason, I will go out of my way to be nice to myself that day. (And alone if possible for the sake of everyone concerned) I don't like to shop, but I'll go for a drive, either out in the country or in a really fancy neighborhood. Take my camera to the lake and take pictures. Or my very favorite, get my hair done. Its strange. I do not like a massage. But I just love to have my hair washed. The guy who does my hair will usually find time for me if I ask nicely. He knows its my version of therapy.

Handling stress? Drink a lot ;-)
Seriously, I like to take a bubble bath, listen to some calming music (Loreena McKennett and Sarah Maclachlan being favorites), pet a cat, read a good book, watch good TV (is there such a thing?), and just baby myself.
Take care of yourself, take a deep breath, and try to worry about one thing at a time.

> {{{{{Karen}}}}} I am so sorry so much is going on for you right now. > Handling stress? Drink a lot ;-) [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > Sending you relaxing purrs . . . . > Ginger-lyn Hey, at last someone has a disease I also have and can advise re! I've had IBS for years; my attacks were much more frequent when I was working (in Class I Trauma Centers - ERs - lotta stress there!) but have slacked off to where I almost never have one, unless I eat something I know triggers IBS *for ME*. Everyone is different; the foods that are deadly to my lower digestive system could be perfectly harmless to you; by the same token, what you'd define as "bad stress level" might be a ho-hum to me, and vice versa..... Now down to basics: I never got nor required "trankies" to help with IBS, although I have friends who swear by their aid with it. I *did* (haven't renewed my Rx for years now) have a doc-Rx med (I understand they've got better in every way over the years) that is a mild narc....w/o affecting your mind in any way, it will put your digestive system to sleep for about 3 days, which ends the cramping pain and bathroom residence on your part. I only used that med when things with the IBS were *really* bad and I had to go somewhere for extended time (work). Grab a notebook; write down *exactly* what you ate for a day or two *before* your latest attack....food aggravation is no small part of this disease. To this day (and the *^^(&*&^% are putting it in more and more sugar-free foods/drinks) that so-called "harmless" Splenda will ruin me for about 24 hours! The stress triggers would start the IBS A COUPLE DAYS AFTER THE STRESS OCCURENCE but I eventually learned to be ready if it started. In addition to the food-eating log, try to write down each stress occurence and when an attack comes on. Hope above helps a little with your misery. Best wishes for you to be doing much better very soon, To my knowledge, this disease is almost completely confined to females...and has never killed anyone (good news) but during attacks one either wishes for death OR in my case, harbors homicidal feelings, LOL.
Karen - 26 Mar 2006 18:35 GMT > . HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT???? >> {{{{{Karen}}}}} I am so sorry so much is going on for you right now. [quoted text clipped - 35 lines] > if it started. In addition to the food-eating log, try to write down > each stress occurence and when an attack comes on. I've started one but I have no clue what I ate the two days prior to when this lower pain started. It's such a specific area. I do know what I ate the DAY before because it was an unusual day for me. But it wasn't anything I would have thought would bother me, as I DO eat those things occassionally. However, I can probably say that I drink too much coffee and half and half. But I'm pretty good with veggies and fruits. But I don't eat many of the soluable fibers list. I'll be tracking from now on. Don't know if this drug they gave me is really doing anything or not. I've not been aggregiously inconvenienced in the bathroom area (but I do have many of the symptoms *at times* which I always chalked up to hormonal antics). It's just this wierd constant thing on the lower left side that is *really* annoying. I guess I just have to see. I hate that I can't really figure out what to eat. Even a temporary list for now, but it all seems quite individualized.

I guess it's actually about equal men and women from what I've read. Boy, I'm sure not nearly as bad as a lot of the awful stories I've read. I feel for those folks. I guess we shall see what we shall see.

My doctor put me on Paxil when I lost my job 2 days before my 20th anniversary with the company. (They gave me an anniversary gift a few days after they gave me my layoff notice!). I was in real bad shape after the layoff. I didn't like the drug and stopped taking it partway through. Now I avoid these medications as much as possible. I drink St. John's Wort tea when I feel depressed.

> But I don't feel like I have enough on going stress for anything like > that. I mean, truly I don't. I guess we'll see how I progress. Well, Paxil is for depression. Stress can result in depression; depression (or rather its symptoms) can exacerbate stress, but the two aren't the same.
If you think you may be depressed, by all means see a *good* doctor and get evaluated to see if you need Paxil.
When I feel stressed, I try to take at least a few minutes to take stock of my life and figure out what's going wrong, what bits I can change, and what (if anything) I can do about the bits I can't change. The oldies-but-goodies help me - getting myself back on a schedule that allows for *some* exercise and regular sleep; eating regularly but not too much; talking to friends; and setting up some kind of schedule for whatever work is stressing me, ranging from saying 'no' and making it stick, or rearranging my job to working on plans for the future that don't include the job.
