Police must arrest nude riders, says mayor

http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3599737a11,00.html

10 March 2006
By HAYLEY GALE

Tasman Mayor John Hurley claims Takaka police will look "utter fools"
if they do not arrest nude cyclists taking part in Golden Bay's third
annual naked bike ride on Sunday.

Mr Hurley, who on Friday signed a petition against nude cycling, said
the naked ride was "abhorrent" to many in the community.

Petition organiser Ron Swan was to present the petition containing 200
signatures to Takaka police on Friday.

About 100 people are expected to take part in the clothing-optional
ride from Tarakohe to Pohara. It has been organised to highlight the
issue of safer cycling and to promote the use of alternative forms of
energy.

Sergeant Arthur Clarence of the Takaka police said that following legal
research into the issue, police concluded that nude cycling was not
illegal.

"We have taken advice on the legality of their proposed action and have
been advised that it falls short of an offence," he said in a statement
issued this morning.

As riders were meeting in a disused industrial building in an
unpopulated area and cycling to an enclosed yard behind two-metre-high
fences, this was substantially different from last year's event.

"Both the police and organisers have accepted that the format of last
year's naked bike ride was a mistake, but we have to move on from
that," the statement said.

But Mr Hurley said it was important to all of those people signing the
petition that police be seen to uphold the law.

He said the nude riders were "a bunch of radicals trying to grab a
headline".

"Police arrest streakers at football matches and they will look utter
fools if they don't arrest people riding nude," Mr Hurley said.

"People can do what they like on private property but nude cyclists
should not be allowed on a public road."

Asked why the council had not provided safe cycleways in Golden Bay
despite submissions from cyclists, Mr Hurley said cycle paths were not
economically viable in areas where the population was thinly spread.

Mr Swan, who is also the conductor of the Takaka Citizens' Band, said
he would be "very disappointed" if the nude cyclists were not arrested.

"If the Takaka band marched in the nude, that would stir things up," he
said.

Sheesh - these people need to get a life. Go stop some real criminals,
for god's sake.

Although I must say, if I were going to do something in the nude, it
would assuredly not be riding a motorcycle. I'm just thinking about
the road rash that could result.... OUCH!!!

Tsk, tsk... male boasting again... for *it* to get caught in a spoke, it
would have to be very long..

Dave.

I love your piece on the nude cyclists of Takaka.   John and I have just
come home from Takaka - we did a trip down the South Island.   I was born on
a dairy farm in Takaka, Golden Bay, one of the most  beautiful, isolated
places on earth.

I took a lot of photos during my trip down memory lane, including some of
the tame eels in Takaka, the pupu springs (the largest freshwater springs in
the southern hemisphere), and the  bandstand at Pohara beach   When I was a
kid the band played in the band rotunda every Sunday.   The beaches there
are incredible, some have golden sand but all are beautiful with bush coming
right down to the sea in places.

I had to laugh at the bicyle lanes - it is over forty years since I have
been back and it seemed to me that it hadn't changed much since then.   I
also howled with laugher at the thought of the nude cyclists - can't think
of who would be going out to see them.  It is very sparsely populated.

Thanks for the laugh..  Although I read the newspapers from cover to cover I
missed this article.

Oh, whoops. I thought this was nude *motorcycling*. Well, it doesn't
matter, I guess. You can still get some pretty bad road rash on a
bicycle, as I'm sure Helen S can attest to! I wouldn't want to get it
naked. But I still think the cops should have other things to worry
about.

Actually, it's not he bicycle that causes road rash ;-)

It's the unexpected coming off of a bicycle that can result in some
spectacular road rash... as can be attested by Nathan when in Cologne and he
managed to get his front wheel lodged in a tram line. This resulted in
Nathan going ar$e over t!t and leaving large quantities of his DNA on
Germany's finest tarmac. Of course, all was worth it, as when I got him into
a nearby ice cream parlour and the lady there sat Nathan down and whisked me
upstairs to a doc's surgery that happened to be next door. Various young,
blonde and pretty German ladies from the doctor's surgery then descended
upon the ice cream shop and ministered to Nathan's wounds. Not a penny in
payment would be taken for dealing with the young Englander's wounds and
large ice creams were devoured (for medicinal purposes of course)

The ice cream shop was here

http://www.ono.de/messetip/si165det37750.htm

The Unfit Family heartily recommend it to anyone visiting the area as the
ice cream was *delicious*

Well, yeah, but a spill bad enough to cause road rash will rip your
shorts, anyway.  It's not like people wear protective gear (other than
a helmet) for road riding ...

I was working in Scotland when he was treking through the Highlands and
came across him. He was a very odd gentleman.

He must have been a very *cold* gentleman!!

Joyce <--- if I ever make a statement about public nudity, it will be
in a temperate climate and I will not be doing anything risky!
Lois - 15 Mar 2006 10:21 GMT
The police were in attendance during the nude cycle ride (there was a photo
in the newspaper) the police advised the riders that they would be arrested
if they were NOT wearing cycle helmets! nobody was arrested, all were well
behaved.

Looking at the photos and just wondering.
Aren't the bike seats very narrow?
and hard!
And if you were a girl and using a boy's bike and you fell.

Well, what I am trying to say.
Isn't it painful!
dave
I keep thinking of the cobblestone joke.

Narrow and hard tends to = comfort on a long bike ride. Broad and padded
does not equal comfort, as too much width & padding puts pressure on bits
that shouldn't have pressure and actually makes for a more uncomfortable
saddle. See

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/Default.aspx?Main=CategoryProducts.aspx&Cat=cycle&w=0&Ca
tegoryName=Saddles%20-%20Performance

for some examples of the stuff used by cyclists who are in the saddle for
hours at a time, day in, day out.

Saddles such as this type

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/Default.aspx?Main=ProductDetail.aspx&W=0&Manufacturer=&U
berCatName=&Cat=cycle&CategoryName=Saddles%20-%20Comfort&ProdID=5360015461&UberC
at=0

tend not to be comfortable over anything more than a *very few* miles.

The key with saddles is to get one that *fits* and that's not the width of
bottom, but the width of the 'sit bones' and some bike shops will actually
have devices for checking sit bone width.

For me, my Terry's Liberator TiLite and Terry's Liberator Race Lite are the
bees' knees.

I lurv my saddle.  Can't think of the name right now; clearly I've
been slacking.

These people are odd, but harmless, in my opinion. I really don't understand
all the fuss about nudity.

Yes, I couldn't give a stuff if someone wandered about Naked. I wouldn't
do it as I suffer from the cold and am a little more reserved! However,
I refer to him as an odd nutter, because despite being arrested on
numerous occasions and being told to get dressed, he refused to do so
and ended up in prison on more than one occasion! Once, he even stripped
off the minute he walked out through the prison gates and because he
breached the terms of his parole, he ended up doing another 7 months
inside. There was a very funny documentary about him on BBC2 a while
back.

What a prude!

Pretty sure there's an international nude cycling day.  I know it's
celebrated here in Boulder.

It's called "Bike Naked" or something.
