By keeping them firmly shut away with a lid on their run until they get big.
I learnt by one hard experience.

Okay, they aren't cats, but they *were* what I was talking about earlier.  I
don't have digi-photos of my cats yet, these were taken by someone else.

Very nice.  One of these days I'm going to have to get pictures of the local
flock of feral banty's.  They have lived at the edge of the highway a few
miles from here for at least 30 years.  The area used to be somewhat rural,
but now they are living on a highway verge between the main road and the
access road.  Only a few yards from a Carl's Jr. and several other
restaurants.  The next block down is still orchard and when the flock is
large it spills over down there.  The flock has been unusually large and
noticable this year for some reason.  Several hens have raised full clutches
of chicks.  Kind of a shame as I fear the authorities will decide something
must be done about them.  The little roosters are gorgeous.

I hope the authorities don't decide against them.  There's something so nice
about bantams all over the place, roaming wild, they aren't doing any harm,
are they?

Well they are right next to the road and I'm sure some people might think of
them as a hazard.  The only time I've ever heard of them causing a problem
was about a month ago someone managed to get one caught in his windshield
wiper.  He drove to the police station for assistance where it managed to
escape.  It was later caught and placed in a home as the animal control
rules around here do not allow for just releasing "pets".  That made the
newspapers.  Otherwise I think the authorities just pretend they aren't
there.  I know feed isn't a problem around here.  I wonder sometimes what
they do for water.

A couple of years ago, I stopped at a small park in the western
suburbs of Nashville that adjoins a police station.  A rooster, hen,
and seven or eight chicks were scratching around in the shrubbery
along the police station's wall.  I suspect that they were the
station's unofficial mascots.  I stopped there again, a few months
ago, but didn't see any chickens on this visit.

Awww! They're so cute! Nikki is sitting here, too, purring at the little
chickies.
