OMG, Pill Hell

Enfilade - 12 Mar 2006 18:08 GMT We came home from lunch to find that someone had thrown up their pill on the rug. No way to tell who. Likely Kumani, but Tyche's also had pukes and I don't put it past Nox to retch it up out of spite.
Went on the Net and found out that Drontal can be safely crushed, so we made the second pill into powder and sprinkled it in Nox's mouth.
Some of it missed, she was thrashing so hard, and what DID get in, she promptly started to spit and drool, casting ribbons of yellow ooze onto us and the couch...I don't know if she swallowed any.
I worry about Kumani, who spat out the liquid kind we gave them last year, and Nox, who is just so unmanageable...

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I've never had to pill Oscar. Giving her liquid antibiotics as a kitling was painful enough, for both of us.

He is giving me more problems than the last time he was on such antibiotics. This regimen has just started yesterday and I still have many day to go.

Nox, I'm still freaked out that someday we will have to pill her daily (like Molpe, this cat I catsat for, who mercifully doesn't mind his daily pill) and she will aspirate the pill and choke to death, or crack her neck writhing to escape. Also, she bit me really hard and it still hurts.

Purrs for round 2 in two weeks with the Drontal.

Cleo never even tastes her food, she eats so fast. So pills aren't a problem for her. But since Smokey won't eat treats (they're Kat food you know and Smokey is a Hoomin). We tried crushing the pills in her meat, but she got very skilled at eating around even the smallest pieces. A very talented tongue. Plus she tends to wretch up her meat. I ended up making pill pockets out of CHEEZ cubes. :)

Purrs that you find a way to get the meds into each cat. If you crush the pill, can you mix it into water and then squirt it into Nox's mouth? I know it's hard, Frank became very unmanageable his last year. He suddenly stopped eating his hyperthyroidism meds mixed into sourcream, and when I tried squirting it into his mouth, he would squirm and thrash, and always jerked his head away right at the moment when I pushed the plunger.

She will not eat human food. She will not eat soft food. She will not eat if anyone is watching her. Including other cats.
Obviously she eats, since she's the heaviest of all our 4, but...we'd have to put crushed up pill into something and then lock her alone in a room with it and not let her out until she ate it.
And as for Kumani, I think it's her who throws up about an hour after pilling/medicating! What good is it if it won't stay down!?
Smokey and Tyche, hell, who needs pill pockets when they're happy to just eat pills?!

Crush pill and dissolve in a small amount of water, Put it in an eyedropper(don't let cat see you do this). When ready, insert eyedropper into side of mouth and squirt . Best of luck.

Ah - Drontal is incredibly bitter, which is why the yellow stuff is encased in the hard white stuff... and probably why there was a lot of drooling. It disagreed with 2 of my cats who would throw it up within an hour of getting it. I now use Milbemax on them which is a tiny pill that goes down easily & covers lots of the nasties. http://www.ah.novartis.com/products/en/cab/milbemax.shtml

These weren't encased at all. It explains part of Nox's hate.
Thanks for the info. We're thinking next year, we'll make them deworm Nox as part of her annual checkup, or maybe we'll take them all in to the kennel and ask for deworming to be done then, by the vet techs. They're PAID to deal with Nocturne's shenanegans.

JBHajos - 13 Mar 2006 18:41 GMT >I worry about Kumani, who spat out the liquid kind we gave them last >year, and Nox, who is just so unmanageable... I feel for you, totally sympathetic. When our Speckles needs meds (pills or liquid), she goes into Tornado Mode and it's pure hell on pille-ee and pill-er. There has been a *lot* of medicating since she developed her myriad ailments last September, a *lot* of stress on her and us, usually using up three pills to get one down her. Don't even *think* about liquids!!! For pills, the Pill Pockets worked beautifully for about 3-4 days, then, forget it!!!
Bottom line, with her latest diagnosis of hyperthyroidism, she was prescribed yet another pill, horror of horrors! We talked it over with her vet who suggested compounding. He knew a pharmacy that could handle it, called in a prescription for the 30-day supply of premeasured doses of a topical ointment in 3 syringes. The syringe doesn't touch her, so doesn't frighten her; the ointment dose is "squirted" on your gloved finger, to be applied to the hairless skin inside her ear. Voila!! Perfect!! Except for a slight ear twitch on contact, she shows no sign of discomfort or rebellion. Medication has been the easiest possible, certainly she prefers it to a finger poked down her throat. I'm sure compounding can't be done for every kind of pill but if it could work for yours, I strongly recommend it. Good luck!!!
