Update on Rusty

W. Leong - 10 Mar 2006 21:42 GMT Good thing I didn't wait to take Rusty to TED. We just got back. TED did a full urinary test and geriatric blood panel. There was blood in his pee, and the pH was around 5. So he will be on antibiotic for 2 weeks and we are switching prescription food again for the nth time. But back to MediCal preventive formula for urinary problems and I think it will be cheaper. Plus he had it before so it should still agree with his sensitive tummy. But today's total charge was over $300 Canadian! Ouch ouch! I still have to go back for a refill on the antibiotic and a recheck and vaccination which is due next month. I may postpone the vaccination to give my bank account a breather. Hope the blood results are fine. I won't know till next week as they are sending the blood out to some lab.
Now I feel drained and need something to calm me down. Rusty is very stressed too. It has been a rough long day.
Thanks for all your purrs.

Purrs that he gets well quickly, purrs for your frazzled nerves, and purrs for your depleted bank account!

W. Leong - 10 Mar 2006 22:27 GMT > Oh, Winnie, I'm so glad you took him in. I can really empathize with poor > Rusty - I get UTIs all the time and they are *painful*. Have you tried cranberries? They are supposed to be good for UTI. Last night I was enjoying a cranberry pie with some friends and remarked that cranberries are good for UTI. Little did I know then I will be dealing with a feline UTI today.
On another note, Chico, the himmie who lives at TED's clinic had eye surgeries. I didn't get the details. But poor Chico's eyes look cloudy. He has put on some weight and was sleeping on the counter. He used to come to meow to Rusty. But not this time. I was told Chico hates other cats, but he likes Rusty. Chico is younger than Rusty, but he looks older. TED's dogs are also boarding at his clinic while he is on vacation. No boarding fees for him. The subtitue vet seems nice. She didn't put a catheter in Rusty to collect urine the way Rusty's regular TED did, but gave him an injection to make him pee. She wanted to make sure Rusty is not blocked and can pee on his own. It is less traumatic for Rusty too, who loudly complained when they drew blood. from his neck.

Yep, I eat cranberries almost every day. This is a problem I've had since I was a baby - though I have them less now than I used to (besides cranberries, I've learned some other preventative measures). Even though I get them less, I still get them all too often, so I still keep AZO on hand at all times.

Cranberries are supposed to help for humans, but I would talk to a vet before giving Rusty cranberry pills. They're probably very concentrated.

Good point. I will ask the vet when I take Rusty in for the followup. I am also concerned that cranberry may push the urine pH too low which is not good for oxalate crystals. Rusty doesn't have oxalate, but at his age he may be at risk for it. Hopefully the switch back to prescription food for urinary health will be sufficient. He was on prescription food for G/I problems which hopefully won't recur. All these changes of presciption are getting a bit much. Good thing Rusty eats every prescription food given to him

I eat a Lean Cuisine meal everyday for lunch (the same one since I'm boringly predictable) - turkey tenderloins with whipped sweet potatoes and stuffing - and it comes with cranberries mixed in. But I'll have to have a look for the cranberry pills the next time I'm at Walgreens.

But I just realized cranberries may lower Rusty's urine pH further. It may be OK when he was young. Now that he is 11 going on 12, it may put him at risk for oxalate crystals. There may not be much cranberry in your lunch meal to make much difference. I remember hearing another doctor said you need to drink gallons of cranberry juice. Better to just eat the cranberries or take the pills, and drink lots of water. I just add more water to Rusty's canned food to make sure he is getting enough fluid.

I used to suffer constantly from UTI's, kidney infections and bladder infections. I don't anymore; it's amazing. Also, the best thing is since the cranberry is concentrated in pill form, you're not getting all the sugar from the juice or berry that you would otherwise have to drink or eat. It's so easy. Down a pill at breakfast, lunch & dinner. In about 3 weeks you'll be set.

It's so easy. Down a > pill at breakfast, lunch & dinner. In about 3 weeks you'll be set. There is such a thing as pure cranberry juice; it's just disgusting! I asked DH to get me some cranberry juice once; there was a miscommunication and he got me the pure stuff. Not watered down, not sweetened, no other juices added. I couldn't even drink it in an 8:1 ratio of water to juice!
I could add a tiny bit of the pure stuff to my "normal" cranberry juice cocktail; that was about it.

I think it's a very good idea to delay the vaccinations while he is fighting an infection, and if the vet disagrees, they need to seriously think about what vaccinations do, and the effect on the body.
Purrs for an easy "fix" for Rusty and purrs for your bank account. And, purrs for your frazzled nerves. Let us know what the blood work reveals.

Are you allowed to pay it off, get sent a bill, or pay up front? In Australia, everything has to be paid up front, on the day it's done.
W. Leong - 11 Mar 2006 13:36 GMT We are asked to pay up front, just like in Australia. At least with the vets I have taken Rusty to.

I was just wondering, as people were asking to help out on the 'bill' whether you were billed by the vet, or it was just a figure of speech! Good luck with Rusty!

I think some kind vets will accept payment plans if you're in a tough place.
I know that people in this NG have sent payments to vets for ongoing treatments and cases where the cat has had to stay overnight for a while. Presumably they don't give you the bill for overnights till it's over.
