Cats certainly can be stupid.
Once when I was in the bedroom with the door shut, Doc came and pushed
his paw most pitifully under the door; he was so far under he had his
shoulder and the side of his face right up against the door. I opened it
slowly, and as it opened, Doc moved forward, so that he was still pushing
his paw as far under the door as it would go.
So there was the door, wide open, and the cat still pitifully begging
admittance.
He was really pissed with he realized. Whether they're being stupid or
not, the certainly do hate to *look* stupid.

Are you familiar with - after the "stupid" look....the "I meant to do that,

Oh, yessss.
Pi is afraid of just about everything, and every morning, the smoke
detector goes off while I'm cooking breakfast. (It's my kitchen's way of
keeping me humble.) He knows it's coming, so he goes to hide under the
bed.
Then when he comes out, he wants to pretend it never happened, so he sits
prominently in the middle of the room, so everyone can be witness to the
fact that he's not afraid of anything.
