...do grey cats go grey? or white?
Persia is already a grey cat. She has grey-blue fur, like a Russian Blue.
(She even has the subtle black stripes on her tail and she has gorgeous
green eyes.) But sometimes when she decides to meatloaf on me when I'm
reclined and reading, when she looks at me her muzzle looks like it's
turning silver. But then a minute later, when she turns her head, it
doesn't look like that. And sometimes the backs of her ears look more
silver than grey, but then if I rub the fur there it goes back to grey. Do
grey cats go "grey" as they age? Or is this a trick of the light?

Smokey is the same. She'll be 14 (!!!!) this year, and even when she was
young (we got her from a friend who was moving, and couldn't (or wouldn't)
keep her - and she was about a year old, and not yet spayed!!!), sometimes
she looks charcoal colored, sometimes silver, sometimes pewter. sometimes
her whiskers look black, sometimes white. It's the way the light reflects
off her fur & whiskers! Tricky li'l buggars, aren't they?

Thank Bast I don't have to think about buying Loreal fur-colour! LOL And
Persia sends hugs to Weeble... she's been snuggling up and pretending I'm
her boyfriend :) We all know Weebs is her boyfriend.

Weebles sends purrs, nose kissies and huggles back to His Precious Persia,
and wants to know if Persia ever got the Valentine card he sent via email
(or if it got lost in cyberspace).

Or is this a trick of the light?
Trick of the light I think reflecting off their fur. Redunzel and
Sarrasine are black under most lights but sunlight or bright electric
light turns them chocolate brown and when you look closely they're
actually tabbies with black and very dark brown markings. Then they
move off from the light and if they move slowly enough you can actually
see them turning back into black cats. Their eye colours also change
with the light

Persia's eyes change from deep green to gold to green with gold around the
irises. I think it took me 3 months before I figured out she really has
green eyes!

I think it's possible. Kitty Schottland, a very dark tortie, is
sixteen and a few of her black whiskers and her muzzle are starting to
turn gray.
Even Capt. Midnight (RB), a black cat, got more and more white fur, and
his black whiskers turning white, as he aged.

It's a trick of the light. Miranda (15 months old) is the same. her fur
goes from almost white to slate grey, all depending on the light.
Nikki got white hairs as she got older, but then she was black and white
to begin with. Frank's black parts went brown. So confusing.

Princess (RB 16) was a traditional Siamese. She had very dark points and
her body fur got very dark too as she got older. In the few months
before she died, he body fur became increasingly lighter. By the time her
final days arrived, he body fur was almost white. I still miss that
beautiful girl-cat. MLB

Jill - My grey kitties, Bonnie and Cindy, are Russian Blue "wannabes"
with beautiful blue grey coats. They are also almost 17 years old!
I've watched my beautiful grey kitties slowly going "grey" over the
past couple of years. I really see it around their muzzles; they're
lighter and greyer than the rest of their lovely blue grey coats. It's
sad to see them getting old but they're still beautiful cats.

Nico's not aging yet, not for a long time, but he seems to have some
parts of his body where his grey fur looks silvery in certain lighting
conditions. And when I look at his fur up close, he has a mix of
different colour hairs making up that shade of grey - black ones, grey
ones, silvery ones etc. Even his whiskers are white, grey and black.
Some hairs are one colour all the way, others are a different colour at
the tip and another near the skin, but still when looking at him he
looks just grey (except for the white paws on the left and the white
markings on the throat, "armpits" and belly).

My Arthur's whiskers seem to be going white as he gets older. When he
was young his all whiskers were all black, like the rest of his coat,
except for a single white one on the left side. Now he's 15 and his
whiskers are almost all white.

I don't know and suspect I never will because Vino is so light coloured.
But I have noticed that as he gets older, he gets more and more dark
spots on his lovely pink lips :-(

On at least some cats, such as my Cinders, there seems to be both
short white under-fur and longer dark outer-fur. If the fur at a
given point is spread apart, so that I am seeing down almost to her
skin, the fur looks much lighter-colored than it does if it is
smoothed down.

Melisande looks silver from certain angles, too - especially
about the muzzle. I think it's just the shade of grey she
is (and apparently Persia is, too). My new little cat,
Cendrillon, is black and white, but some black areas have
just a few white hairs growing out among the black. I think
it's simply the way her fur grows. (She's much too young to
be "going grey"!)
