Yes, it was time again for the cleaning of the Drinkwell fountain. I was
sadly lax in not cleaning it last Saturday. As a result, when I took it up,
drained it, removed the motor and filter and prepared to give it a good
scrubbing, Persia was on hand to make sure it was done properly.
First, the filter had seen better days even when I scrubbed it well during
weekly cleanings. I tossed it in the garbage can. Persia made sure it went
in there.
Second, I got the water pretty hot. Persia sat next to the sink and made
sure the temperature was right.
Third, I removed the motor and set it aside. Persia made sure it was set up
where the electrical plug couldn't get wet.
Fourth, I scrubbed out the bowl with one of those Scotch-brite pads. I used
a small round brush for the inner "intake" valve for the water and for the
tiny parts that control the regulator (flow) control.
Fifth, I removed the impeller (looks like a propeller, but it runs in
reverse) from the motor and cleaned it, then used the small round brush to
clean thoroughly inside the motor before reinserting the impeller blade.
Persia sat on the counter as I did all this, then she moved to the lid of
the toilet as I reassembled the unit and rinsed then inserted a fresh new
filter.
I ran clear cold water and filled up the fountain. I moved it to its
regular place in the bedroom and plugged it in. Whoosh! Water started
running through. "Look, Persia! Fresh cold water!"
Persia, having made sure her servant had performed her chores properly,
calmly exited the room without so much as offering a backwards glance at the
fountain, which is now offering up newly fresh, cold water.
I know my place :)

If I had one of those things, Pi would never do anything else.

Persia used to drink from the faucet when I was brushing my teeth. I was
afraid I'd spit toothpaste on her head so I bought her a fountain. She
loves her fountain! Constant running water! Another thing for me to clean,
but still... :)

Someone gave me a Petmate fountain, so I set it up for my 3. They were
all afraid of it! But after a little while, I discovered Smudge drinking
from it, then Roxy. I saw Licky staring at the water today, not sure if
he dared to take a drink. So I guess they like it, uneasily...

Ahem, I do that with my coffee maker but then, I'm not looking to take a
drink out of it like a cat might be. Why not just wash it? Oh, and change
the filter! :)

Depends on how hard your water is. I have to soak their Drinkwell in a
vinegar solution about every 3 month to get the crusted minerals off (and
the crusted minerals hold dirt). You can actually feel the rough surface
with your fingertips it's so heavy. If you don't have hard water it might
not be necessary.

I do it as often as most people clean as it does it all and no soap residue,

must change the filter often as well, I don't like using a scratcher to
clean it and as we have deep well water the vinegar gets rid of the
minerals, sanitizes and freshens all at the same time. Don't you drink the
coffee you brew? or are you saying she wants to drink right away, we fixed
that by having 2, and if you do it weekly and rinse the filter you are
talking about 30 minutes max, Lee
