Hello-
My 9yo DSH calico, Sallie, has a spot under her right forearm (forepaw?)
that she has licked bald. There is no apparent sign of an abcess or injury.
I think some people call this a "hot spot"? It's about 1 1/2" inches
across.
I have no problem taking her to the vet; my problem is, I recall the
treatment for these (probably) itchy spots is cortisone. If that is the
case, I wouldn't feel comfortable subjecting her to cortisone's side
effects - I've seen what it does to people and really don't want to medicate
my kitty with it.
Has anyone had any experience with these spots? Am I correct in thinking a
vet would probably prescribe cortisone? If so, can anyone suggest an
alternative?
TIA

Well,, it's definitely an allergy of some sort. You can try a topical
cortisone on it, but she'll probably just lick it off. I had a dog who got
constant hot spots and had his blood tested to find out what the cause of
his allergy was. (Not cheap, BTW.) Part of his problem was his thyroid and
for the rest of his life he had to take thyroid pills. I used a
prescription tar shampoo weekly to soothe the hot spots and rinse contact
allergies off his fur. Cortisone pills really helped, but he blew up and
got lethargic, so I stuck with the thyroid and shampoo treatment. Hope this
helps.

A single small dose of cortisone can be very effective with these
itches-- Stinky had one once with no ill effects.
