My cat scared me

Yesterday my old cat Patches http://www.mary.cc/patches/ was sitting next to my
feet in my home office. I decided to let my midget skunk in the house to run
around. I'm training him to be an educational animal for my wildlife rescue
group. Here's a pic of him and Patches. He's grown a little since then but is
still the size of a 7 week old kitten.

http://www.animaladvocates.us/images/areyoumymommy.jpg

Anyway, the skunk is in the house running around and having fun. Now Patches
doesn't like the skunk. He will hiss and growl at him, then he'll slap his paw
in front of the skunk on the ground. The midget skunk understands this and
walks a wide circle around him. Patches is four times the size of the skunk so
maybe the skunk thinks he's a big skunk.

Well yesterday Patchy is sleeping and the midget skunk comes up to him...and
pokes him. Then he licks his tail and sniffs his face! Patchy's eyes are closed
and he isn't moving. Patchy should have woken up and at least waved a sharp paw
over the skunks head. I go over to Patchy and say "Patchy, Patchy, are you
okay!" He doesn't move and seems stiff! I look at his eyes. Only the whites are
showing! I said to my husband a little loud "I think Patchy had a heart
attack!" then Patches wakes up with a look on his face like "I just had a heart
attack? When did this happen?" Then he sees the skunk and waves a sharp paw in
his direction, tries to hiss but ends up just coughing. He's kind of old.

I guess he was just sleeping super soundly. He sure scared me. Darn cat.

Oh Mary, it's kind of sad and funny at the same time!! I think it's very
funny that he did the paw waving even though it was way too late.  How old
do you think Patchy is? I know other posters here have had incidents like
that and their cats weren't that old. I love that picture of Patch and the
skunk.

My TuTu did that about a month ago.  I really had trouble awakening her.
When she finally stirred, she stretched out and yawned as much to say "I
had the best dream".   For a minute or so, I was sure she was at the
Bridge.   MLB

I've had that happen on a couple of occasions with my dogs when they were
very elderly.  It might be to do with that their hearing isn't too good, and
noises which might once wake them, don't.
It's very scary.  I was once so sure that Daisy was dead that I lifted her
up and she was still floppy.
I blew in her ears and eyes.  "Eh?  Eh?  Put me down, I was *so* comfy"
Talk about relief!

Great picture! Patches does kind of look like the skunk's mommy.

I know what you mean about getting scared when the cat doesn't respond
at all. Especially when they're old! It's a special kind of b*stard cat
trick which could almost give *you* the heart attack.

LOL!  From that picture, it looks like Patches is at least a "cousin" to the
skunk herself.

If I might inquire, I've know of it but never heard the 'how' of
de-scenting a skunk.  How is it done, starting from when you have a
skunk in a humane trap?

I rehab ill, injured and orphaned skunks, squirrels, opossums... then release
them back to nature when they are able. Every once in a while you get an animal
that can't be released back to nature because of a deformity, disability or
illness. Booger my midget skunk is a little deformed and has major nasal
issues. He's also allergic to the outdoors. I can either euthanize him or use
him for education. As he's a happy guy, I decided to use him for education. He
is not descented. He just doesn't realize he has a butt that can spray. I may
get him neutered. When they descent them, they just remove their anal glands.
Dogs, cats, opossums, squirrels, skunks all have anal glands. The skunks just
have the ability to empty their anal glands with perfect aim to about 15-20
feet. Their glands have a yellow thick oily STINKY burning liquid that they can
squirt out. It will burn your eyes and you can smell it for a long time at a
long distance. I didn't trap Booger. He was only three weeks old when found
abandoned. I just picked him up like a little tame kitten.

Well, what happens when he gets startled one day and instinct kicks those
glands into gear? Eeew. He is awful cute.

I've startled him quite a few times. I gave him shots, took him to the vet for
a booger swab, trimmed his nails, big skunks smacked him around, Patches
smacked him once...The worst he has done is get scared and poo. He hasn't even
shown his butt or jets. His jets are the anal gland openings. When they get
startled normally their anus gets real wide and they show the "red eye," then
two red jets come out on either side of the anus. All he does is make the baby
yell which sounds like "eeeeeeeeeeee!" He may be a little retarded too. Someone
said his face looks like he has down syndrome. It does. But he's a happy little
guy and loves playing, eating, living.

He sounds really sweet. He may be a real late maturer. You need to take more
pics of him!!

Reminds me of a story a friend told me regarding a pet skunk his family
had when he was a child. The skunk was supposedly de-skunked at the time
of neutering. One day, years after the surgery, the friend's dad was
playing & rough-housing with the skunk too much for its liking. Dad
pointed at the stamping lil critter and laughed, as it turned and raised
its tail.

He bent down to stroke it and the skunk let him have it at point blank
range! Eeeeek!!!

A house is not a home, without a cat.

It's interesting, though, that the stuff that comes out doesn't smell at
all like feces. To those of you who have "expressed" a cat's anal glands,
does the stuff smell like feces, or is it a different (but nonetheless
horrible) odor? The odor of skunk spray is different from anything else
I've ever smelled.

Poor baby! He's lucky that you were there for him... maybe his rear
end doesn't function according to manufacturers specifications? Or
maybe he really does think he's a cat... :)

I used to have a Sheltie that did that when he got older. Sure can be
frightening!
