Otis is barfing up a storm

Otis threw up 5 times today and there are small places where he's had some
dry-ish heaves as well.  He was licking his lips all night last night and is
still doing the same thing today, though less frequently.

I hope it will clear up on its own in short order but will watch him
carefully over the next day.  Poor little guy's dragging a bit.  He's
drinking though, which is good.

I had this with HRFL Tiger a while back and I couldn't figure out what
was making him feel rough as he seemed fine in himself (i.e. litter box
offerings were normal etc). Turned out that his anal glands were blocked
and where his was licking his butt, he was making himself feel ill and
puke. If it continues, it might be worth TED checking Otis out.

Hope Otis feels better soon.

Purrs from his English namesake that he's feeling better very soon.

Thank you Helen.  Is it visible to an amateur when the anal glands are
blocked?  I've looked back there and he *looks* ok to the naked eye but I
don't really know what I'm looking for.

Otis is licking his lips like he's nauseated.  Is this something that HRFL
did too?

If you can't take him to the vet right away, maybe you could call them,
and speak to the vet (or a tech) on the phone about his symptoms? They
might have some suggestions for what you can do for him, or they might
tell you to bring him in - at least you'd know whether it's serious
enough to warrant going to the vet.

Hope he feels better soon!

Thank you for your purrs.  I took Otis to TED this AM because he was
dragging this AM too.  TED (the one who found him when he was lost 1.5 miles
from our house 3 years ago) said that Otis was generally looking ok.  He's
well hydrated, temp is good, physical exam shows no obvious blockages or
lumps.  We've taken him off food and water until tonight, he had a pepcid
shot and a shot of something else for his stomach, and we'll give him pills
of the same for the next few days.  If diarrhea starts or he doesn't perk
up, he'll be back at TED's tomorrow.

Not only did Otis hurl *all* over our new carpet (I've now counted 8 spots)
but he jumped up on my dresser to find the European design magazines that
our architect left us and hurled on one of them.  It was nice of him to try
a magazine instead of the carpet but did he have to choose that one?  We'll
have to rip off the cover to give it back to the architect.

My big brave Otis stood on the examining table and burrowed his head into me
again.  He operates on the theory that if he can't see TED then TED can't
see him.  It's kind of touching.

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted.   I probably panicked too soon and
took him in too soon ... but he's my boy ...

Guess I spoke too soon in my other post! I'm glad you took him in,
that much puking sounds like something's wrong. It might not be serious,
but clearly he's not comfortable, and could use something to help him
feel better at the very least. I'm glad that, so far, the vet hasn't
found anything really wrong with him.

Cats do have pretty delicate stomachs, and sometimes they just go through
a bout of vomiting. It is important not to let him get dehydrated, though,
so I'm glad the vet was looking for that.

Many purrs for Otis to feel better! If I had my way Scouty would have
been at the TEDs at nine o'clock this morning too... but she's not
totally 'flat' the way Silver was when she had her hairball.

Purrs for Otis to perk up and quit hurling.  I hope he doesn't have to
go back to TED's again.

Ooops!  I hope the architect doesn't mind.  When are you guys starting
your big project?  What plan have you come up with concerning Otis and
what to do with him during the construction?

Vino did that to Dennis when we had to take him out of his carrier at
the airport when we first came to Thailand.  It was soooo sad, but sweet
too!

We're starting the project in April or May I hope.  We haven't settled on a
good plan for the cats yet.  We're actually even thinking of buying a small
house in the neighbourhood, attempting to cat proof the yard, and then
renting it out after we're finished renovating.  We definitely go above and
beyond for Otis!  Housing prices are nuts right now though so we haven't
decided.

Very sweet I know.  It's very flattering that he seems to think that I'll
protect him.  Chester, who's so shy at home, just sits on the examining
table like he owns the place.  What role reversals!

Wow, that is definitely going above and beyond!  But hey, I know
excactly what you mean.  One day I'll make a list of everything we've
done for Vino...
And the house could be a good investment!  I heard house prices in
Calgary are continuing to rise.

I just think it's so sad to see our proud cat-people reduced to hiding
their heads in our armpits!  But you're right, it's flattering that they
turn to us in their moments of fear.  That is quite a role reversal with
Otis and Chester.  I'm actually quite surprised at how wussy Vino gets,
considering at home he's so at ease and not scared of any strangers that
come in.  I wonder if it's because some cats are more closely tied to
their territory and others are more independent?  Cats, who will ever
understand them ;-)

Awww... Otis is soooo lucky!!! On the plus side, real estate is usually
a very good investment.

Still purring for Otis. I'm sure TED asked this, but could Otis have
eaten some plant that didn't agree with him? Or anything else slightly
toxic (obviously not terribly toxic, though).

Thanks Tweed.  I've been thinking about what you said about shrews.  It
would be just like Otis to have eaten one and feel crummy.  He's doing well
now on his anti-nausea meds and is slowly coming back onto his food.  He's

Thanks Christine :-)  It's nice to see you again!

Otis responded very well to the meds initially but still seems quite
nauseated between pills in that he's licking his lips a lot.  I hope he
snaps out of it soon since the alternatives for diagnosis are less benign
than "upset stomach".

He's still extremely lovey though :-)
