Jasmine's due for her snip tomorrow (thursday actually but I have to drop
her tomorrow because of transport difficulties), so purrs would be
appreciated!! I want the vet to check her over as well,as she's been acting
a bit odd lately. So far I'm putting it down to her being in heat (I didn't
want her to have the op until the kittens were weaned, as they won't be very
sensitive about her wound). She has been really cranky, smacking her kittens
for no reason, and actually biting mango. I've never seen her bite anyone
before. I'm pretty sure she has been on heat, as she's also been
superpossessive of me, and trying to escape a lot. She has been eating grass
and hurked up once, but she does that whenever she eats grass so I don't
think it's that. She doesn't seem sick, just generally cranky. For instance,
when i hand out the treats, she won't eat in the same room with the other
cats, she just sits there and looks at me with a grumpy look on her face,
and sniffs the food, and looks at me etc etc....if i put her in the room on
her own and go away she'll eat, but if another cat even looks at her food
she will turn tail and walk off, looking very ill-used. I really don't know
what's up with her. Any suggestions? will the desex sort her out??

I've seen female ferals become sweeter after being spayed so your Jasmine may
too.

thanks for the encouragement :) i hope so, she has a sweet nature usually,
so having her so cranky throws the whole 'family' off balance

I hope it goes well.  Will the vet still do the spay if she's in heat?

yes, they just charge $30 extra though. I'm not sure if she's in heat or
just getting the heebie jeebies from being indoors. I think I'll take her
for a walk tomorrow before the ted's and see if that calms her down. she
doesn't like being inside much.

Purrs for an uneventful spay. It will take a few days for her hormones to
settle down, she should be fine after that.

thanks for the reassurance :)
she's the first total feral that i have had, all the others have been kind
of 'outdoors neglected but human's' cats

Lots and lots of purrs for an uneventful snip and for Jasmine to stop
being cranky,

thanks! This is a new vet, i spent a lot of time ringing around different
vets and this one seemed the most helpful and informative, and not so
mercenary as some, as they are keeping Jasmine in o'night at no charge, so
if we like them they will be our family vet. They have offered us a discount
to get the boys done in another two months.

I don't want to discourage you, and Jasmine may very well calm down
after she has been spayed. Her actions are very natural; nature is
making sure that she doesn't mate with her own offspring, that's why she
is being so cranky and trying to get rid of the kittens, now that they
can eat for themselves. Miranda's mother Kira was the same way when her
kittens were around 16 weeks. Suddenly, she hated them all and couldn't
get rid of them fast enough. The bad news is, she still hates the one
(male) kitten that stayed in the family. Kira has been spayed, but that
made no difference to her attitude towards Emil. We'll be purring that
Jasmine does calm down, though.

yes, that was my first thought to. however she is still feeding them at
least once a day, enjoying cuddles with them and only bops them
occasionally. most of her aggro is just general grumpiness, or a swipe at
mango if he gets in between her and me. mango is in that 'insensitive
teenager' stage
