Vernon has been working on the stable of cycles out in the garage most of
today, with the garage door open. He's had various feline visitors coming
and going as Waffles, Francis and Marble have been in to check on Paw
periodically. Tonight though, he's had another visitor - one of my
neighbour's cats :-) The visitor is a neutered male, a tabby, same colouring
as Marble, but different pattern of stripes. He's a sweetie too. Found out
that he and Marble are friends as there's been feline playing going on in
the garage & at the front of the house. I went out there and was greeted by
two tabbies running to meet me, tails held high and each trying to outdo the
other in the purring stakes. Both boys also told me that they had not been
fed for the last six months.... I told them that I am not as green as I am
cabbage looking, but rewarded them with a morsel of cat treats. I went back
indoors and was followed by two tabby boys.... The visitor has now gone home
and my three are inside for the evening.

Cheers, helen s

Where did you get this phrase from?  This phrase was one my grandmother
used.  I've never heard it used anywhere else except in our family.  I'd be
very interested to know where it came from if you know.

It's one from my childhood. Used by my dad. Occasionally by my mum, but more
often by my dad.

Where were they brought up?  I am studying Leicestershire phrases in my
spare time, what little I have, so it really surprised me to hear you use
the cabbage one.

And more importantly, what does it mean? Does it mean, "I'm not rolling
in cash"?

It means "I am not as stupid as I look."

I figured that the meaning was something like that, since a lot of
people use "green" to mean "inexperienced".  Dogs and cats are both
skilled at the "poor, starving, neglected animal" look even when they
have just finished eating.

When I visited my sister back at Christmas time, she took a week off
from work.  She usually feeds her two cats as soon as she gets home
from work, so both of them seemingly thought that having her home all
week would mean they would be fed constantly.  Every time either one
of us walked in the general direction of the kitchen, both cats would
come running in hopes of getting fed extra food.

True. I used to know a *29-pound cat* who could sucker people into
giving him food, the poor starving darling! :)

I can relate!  My cats usually get fed when I come downstairs in the
morning, and when I come home in the evening.  Therefore, they seem to think
they should be fed ANY time I come down stairs, and ANY time I come in the
back door!

Rita seems to think that every time I get out of bed, it's time for
her to get fed.  Every time, as in every morning, PLUS every time
I take a nap on the weekends.  Especially if I'm home sick and
spend most of the day in bed. Every time I get out of bed for the
bathroom, it's feeding time.
No, I don't cave.  lol

Ah... OK, that makes more sense.

I've got a vague recolection of one of my teachers at school using that
expression, I've certainly heard it before.

On the walk that I take I usually see two kitties who have a home and
are actually a bit chubby. They let me know in no uncertain terms that
they have not been fed in ages every time I see them :)

How nice that Marble has a little friend. Maybe he'll leave Waffles
alone now? Hope they don't *both* start annoying her.
