I am a new member of the group and have been reading the items. I
have had two cats, Maria and Dora. Yesterday Maria died rather
strangely. I didn't get up real early and was lying in bed reading
when I heard a strange noise coming from the living room. I got up and
Maria was lying on the floor in some sort of convulsion and making a
strange noise. I immediately dressed and took her to the veternarians.
When I got there, they let me go in right away and the vet came and
took her and took her to an inner part of the building. One of the
assistants came out and asked if she had eaten any houseplant or
anything strange. If she had, I didn't know it. Anyway shortly
thereafter the vet came in and said she had died. Didn't know what had
caused it. Maybe she had gotten into something which poisoned her.
So now only Dora. I thought it strange how she had the seizure and
died so suddenly as she had been perfectly normal the day before. In
the afternoon I was reading in the recliner and she was in my lap and
then lying by my legs on the bottom part of the recliner. She does
that sometimes when I am reading. Also that evening ate as usual and
other things until I went to bed.
I tried to send the above message earlier, but it didn't appear as I
think I may have gotten the address wrong.
Now I have a new cat, Tux, who is a shorthair black and white cat. I
saw in the paper where a local animal shelter was having a pet adoption
day and that one could see the pets on the internet. I went on and
found that the shelter people in my county had some cats for adoption.
I tried to get a couple of older cats on the list but they had been
adopted just that day. I did find a young black and white cat that was
adoptable. It is named Tux for tuxedo. He is neutered. He is a very
affectionate cat and loves to lie in ones lap. Also likes to sleep on
the bed with me. Dora, my other cat and he don't fight. May not be
pals but at least can be in the same room without fighting.
If you go to www.catster.com and look to view them, I think you can
see pictures that I posted today. I live in Tennessee which might help
to find them.

I'm sorry about Maria. That must have hurt a lot. I hope Dora and Tux can
help console you.

I'm so sorry that happened. :( It must have been a real shock, since
she wasn't sick beforehand.
Something very similar happened to a friend's cat several years ago.
Sheba was a healthy cat, only about 4 years old, and suddenly one night,
she fell down, made a strange noise, and seemed to have a seizure. My
friend was right there when it happened, and it happened so fast that
she couldn't react. A minute later, Sheba was dead. My friend took her
to the vet anyway, because she needed to know what had happened. The
vet thought that Sheba had had a heart attack, which sometimes happens
to cats. Sometimes they have heart disease, and it's not detected because
nobody thinks to check out the heart of a young cat.
On one level, it didn't make any difference - gone is gone. But on the
other hand, if Sheba had always had that heart condition, then it was
only a matter of time. Somehow to me, that would be much easier to accept
than that my cat had eaten poison - but maybe that's just me.
In any case, I'm very sorry about it, but glad that you have found a
new companion for you and Dora.
Welcome to RPCA!

Very nice cats. Welcome to rpca, and condolences for your loss. That is
almost exactly what happened to my Nikki last May, except she was much
older and I suspect the fit was caused by a new asthma medicine that I'd
just started giving to her.

I am so very sorry to hear about Maria. It is so shocking when one of our
loved ones passes away suddenly. At times like that I am comforted by
thoughts of the Rainbow Bridge (http://www.rainbowbridge.org/).
If your vet is afraid that she might have been poisoned by a houseplant,
you might want to take a look at

I look forward to hearing more about you and your kitties.

I"m very sorry to hear about Maria. That's terrible. DId they think maybe
she had a blood clot or heart attack? It can happen exactly like that. I'm
glad you have Tux too. I hope DOra is OK. Welcome to the group!

Comments on several of the topics for the last few days.
My new cat, Tux, is black and white (mostly black). He had a sister
who was completely black. The person who was keeping them for adoption
suggested that this one might be easier to get along with. He is
sleeping in my lap now as I type. I have been reading all the posts.
My other cat, Dora, is also black and white (more white than Tux is).
I had read about slow introductions, but didn't work it right. I came
in and set the carrier down in the living room and opened the door to
the carrier and Tux jumped out and started exploring the living room.
I went to turn the alarm off that I have. When I came back in Dora had
jumped off the love seat where whe was lying and was sniffing Tux. I
think she followed Tux around as he explored part of the house. Then I
picked him up and showed him the litter box. Then he went into the
kitchen and saw a dish with some food so stopped for a bite and a
drink. I left him alone and think he did some more exploring. Dora
went her own way. They are not buddies, but don't fight and have even
eaten at the same time out of a double dish with food on both ends. I
had tow cats and one died so I got Tux and so Dora was used to doing it
with Maria who died. They aren't buddies but at least don't fight.I
try to give Dora all the attention she wants so she won't get jealous
of Tux laying in my lap so much. Dora never lies in a lap but wants to
get up and be played with and petted. She will get in a lap and just
tromp around. Tux is only about 9 months old whereas Dora is almost 2
yrs old. Dora has the curiousity of an Angora. Tux is short haired.
I feel fortunate they get along as well as they so soon as I have only
had Tux for a week.
I don't know about Spanish bar cake, but I have a recipe using Splenda
to make a chocolate carrrott cake which is real good. You put the nuts
on top and can dust with powdered sugar. It is baked in a 9 x 13 pan.
It uses a small amount of oil and prune puree ( get it in baby food
containers) and orange juice as liquid. It makes a really good cake.
I have never dusted with powdered sugar.
