Yesterday Otis had me in stitches, he was dragging his bum along the
floorboards, presumably scratching it. I immediately checked for
worms, and having found none, assume he just needed to scratch (well
who doesn't from time to time).
The only thing that worried me is that my floorboards aren't that great
and if he wasn't careful he could get a splinter in his nether regions.
The thought of attempting to take a splinter out of Otis's bum with
tweezers is not that amusing, I quickly stopped giggling!

Hi Marcia,
If he's scooting and nothing was stuck there -- he might need his scent
glands emptied. We had a cat whose anal scent glands often became
impacted, and the vet had to express them. For some reason his "stuff"
was too thick and then caused him to be uncomfortable back there.

This is interesting to know. I see Smokey doing the butt-scoot quite
often. (once every few days)
Are there other symptoms of impacted scent glands? He seems pretty
normal otherwise.

I didn't notice any other symptoms on our cat. He seems pretty normal

Pokey doesn't do either of these. So, he has a vet visit in March,
unless I see any signs of these between now and then, I'll ask the vet
in March.

Thanks for that, I shall definitely keep an eye on him, he's only done
it once so far that I've seen (in 16 years) so hopefully it isn't
anything to worry about but it's good to know.

Didn't even know about anal glands. Still wondering whether Bert just
loves me or all that facial nuzzling on me...and the door or any stray
corner/edge...is just glands:-Brad

He loves you! He's marking you with his scent glands -- you are his forever.

Boots started scooting and we thought she was wormy, it turned out to
be her anal glands also.
It really was funny; and I know cats hate it when you laugh at them.
But she looks *exactly* like the energizer bunny when she does that.

There is some sort of myth that if a dog or cat scoots it's backside along
the floor, that it has worms. It's far more likely that the anal glands are
impacted, which is *very* uncomfortable for them.
A vet will relieve this discomfort in a few minutes. You can be taught how
to do it yourself, but it's a very smelly unpleasant task. It's worth the
money to let the vet do it, honestly!
If you leave it it can become an anal abscess. (sp?) abcess? How do you
spell that word!!?
anyway one of my dogs only scooted once. The following morning it all burst
under her tail and took ages to clear up with lots of vet treatment, poor
girl.

The first spelling was the correct one, very unpleasent for any animal. :-(

LOL! When Silly does the butt-scooting dance it's because she's been
eating things that shouldn't be eaten (bits of broomstraw, hair etc)
and she's got a bad case of poopybutt... eventually the offending item
breaks off and she runs away happy, leaving meowmie to clean up the
mess!

Fun isn't it! One of mine has scooted her bum along the carpet her whole
life - it wasn't too bad at our old place with the dark rug but we now have a
light beige rug and there is almost always a brown streak on it that I have
to clean up. She doesn't have impacted anal glands - she just likes a clean
bum after her poop!

That can also be a sign of impacted anal glands. I suggest you have a vet
take a look.

Do I need to take him to the vet even though he's only done it once, or
should I wait and see if he does it again first?
Thanks

I would take mine immediately (look at the message from Christina Websell
for an illustration of why to act fast rather than later). On the other
hand, I admit that I am rather obsessive about my furbabies. "Better safe
than sorry," as we used to say.
Please keep us updated.
