Strange food fetishes

Does anyone else's cat have a strange food fetish? My two new meezers are,
well, strange. Cougar has a real taste for vegetables. every week it's a new
one. So far we have broccoli, peas, and raw potato. I don't cook our vegies
in sauce, just steamed, so it seems she actually likes the flavour....so
much to the extent that she tries to nick bits from our plate, and carries
them off growling and glaring at the other cats who just look at her like,
'you weirdo. as if we'd want to eat THAT'. And Mango licks plastic bags. Any
plastic bag. doesn't chew, just sits there and has a good lick. They get a
good quality food (I blend Optimum kitten, Purina anti hairball and Friskies
kitten, in equal amounts) and they get chicken and fish several times a
week. Is there any reason for doing this? do anyone else's cats have weird
tastes like this?

lol! none of my other cats have been interested in anything other than
meat/fish/ham. although i did have a guinea pig who loved hamburgers.

Abelard behaves just as you described when it comes to Brussels sprouts
(even raw ones), corn, asparagus and many others, I forgot which ones at the
moment because my brain is tired. Tommy goes for refried beans and Eli loves
bread.

No idea why.

yes, bread too. but she doesn't go nuts over it like she does for vegies.
For a supposedly carnivorous animal, she acts like she'd rather be a goat!
But gee, Brussels sprouts is really hitting the hard stuff! oh, and mango
eats rubber and bandaids....I didn't know til he threw one up, and they have
been banned from entering the house since. Very scary.

lol too true!! although cougar sometimes needs reminding that she is just a
god, not a Supreme Dictator and Ruler Of The Universe Including Other Cats.
(she's climbing the screen door as I speak. my landlord will kill me)

My current cats' tastes are pretty mundane, but I've had a couple in the
past with different ideas.

Tawny (RB) had a passion for corn on the cob.  He would even happily chew on
a cob where the corn had already been eaten off.  He trained the other three
we had at the time to feel the same way.  Whenever we had corn on the cob,
whe'd cut off the ends to pacify them while we ate, and then give them the
eaten cobs.

Arky (RB) had a thing for bread.  He once chewed a hole in the middle of a
brand new loaf of bread.  It was in a breadbox with a magnetic lid that
pulled down to open.  He figured out how to open the box.  I left the bread
in its wrapper and put it out in the trash.  A little later, I heard the cat
door.  I went in the kitchen, and there was Arky, dragging that chewed loaf
of bread back into the house.

Skeeter (RB) was wild about Miracle Whip, which I prefer to mayonaise.  I
once started to make a sandwich.  I had spread the bread with Miracle Whip
when the phone rang.  I went into the other room to answer it.  When I got
back to the kitchen, Skeeter was on the breadboard, licking the last of the
Miracle Whip off the bread.

He was a cat who definitely had his own drummer.  He was the worst klutz I
ever saw (for a cat), always falling off of things - and always getting up
on top of things to fall off of.  More than once he tried to tightrope walk
on the rod for the drapes over the sliding glass door.  I don't think he
ever got as far as the middle before he fell.

Please don't take this wrong but cats are like people not all of them are
the brightest bulb in the box.  I have had a few like this I had one the
even though he felt the heat squint back from it then decide to sniff it
again  squint back from the heat than put a paw into it pull it back from
the heat  than try to sniff it again it went on till I tapped him on the
forehead and told him no for the fifth time

LOL!!! yep, definitely had a cat like that....my mango right now has tried
very hard to convince me he's stupid....right up to where he pinches
something, or bolts out the front door!!!

OMG, I am not surprised at anything my guys will eat.  I already
mentioned the pizza and burritos.  Potato chips (most flavors),
oatmeal, crackers, cookies, carrots, potatos, broccoli, all kinds of
cheeses, shredded wheat, mushroom soup.  They love the scents of most
herbs-- Stinky practically crosses his eyes and passes out into a bowl
of well- spiced soup.

Fleagor, Millie, and Ozy like watermelon.  Millie and Ozy, and a
couple of others like corn on the cob.  Millie likes mashed sweet
potatoes.  Last night she ate more left over rice and coconut (with
some pot roast juice) than left over pot roast.

One of mine loves steamed broccoli and also taco chips.  Another loves yogurt
but not sure that's so unusual.

It would feel very strange now, after 17 years, not to have at
least one cat in the house who would eat raw peas.

When I lived in AZ I had a female that loved raw millet.

Lol!! Just discovered she will eat carrot if broccoli isn't available

Doc will eat anything I offer him, and I offer him anything I eat except
chocolate and onions.  Pi, OTOH, won't even eat tuna - he only wants the
water.  He'll eat his cat food, pb, and tuna water.  I can't even get him
to taste cream.

Then a couple of months ago, I was opening a can of pumpkin.  I always
let them sniff any cans that I open, because otherwise they're quite sure
it's tuna and I'm holding out on them.

Both of my guys went ape for the pumpkin.  They *loved* it.  Pumpkin!
Whoda thunk it?

Speedy Joe (RB) was the all time winner...let's see, brown bread (not
white obviously worried about his fibre intake), chips (from the
Chinese only), chicken curry and  rice (Chinese only), apple cores (if
slightly borwn he'd pinch them from the bin), crisps, frozen chicken
giblets, pork pie and as for cheese....for years afterwards I couldn't
get out of the two handed cheese cutting position, one hand for the
knife and one to hold the cat back.

Fugazi (RB) chilli sauce off kebabs (she left the meat) and batter from
fried fish (yes she left the fish as well)

Isis (RB) rarely ate anything that didn't come in a box or tin with a
picture of a cat on it. Through she loved prawns and fried fish

Redunzel and Sarrasine don't seem to be too adventurous in their tastes
they don't even care for prawns!!!! Through ham of course is a treat
for which they will murder any hoomin between them and the meat and
anything they can steal from a bin seems to interest them. Fresh
expensive catfood in a bowl doesn't have the thrill of stealing
something from the bin...The one that puzzles me to this day through is
the Southern Fried chicken. Dave got a box with fries and a couple of
bits in it from some new shop that had just opened our way and as soon
as he bit into it, he said "Yeuch!" so he threw it all in the bin. I
made a mental note to take the bin out before going to bed and promptly
forgot.

Next morning.....bin does not appear to have been knocked over. Chicken
box is in middle of room with just two fries left....Fabulous Furballs
are burping and their stomachs are suspiciously bulging...

No trace of the chicken was ever found including the bones. I keep
wondering when they will turn up. It's two years now

Lesley

Slave of the Fabulous Furballs ( After that I brought a bin with a lid
and Sarrasine learnt to open the lid in under 5 minutes!)

Tiger (RB) loved raw potato, everyone in the house learnt to sit down
while peeling potato's .
Kitten (RB) loved raw mushrooms.
Katy (RB) loved egg fried rice
Polly loves pistachio nuts, Liquorice Allsorts and sugar. One day I
caught her licking the sugar of some shortbread and mince pies I had
made to take to college for a christmas/end of term party.
PB, Domino and Tuffty like ginger (crystalised, cup cakes and
biscuits), they also like christmas cake and peanut butter.
Big Tabby, Chocky and Smudge don't like anything that's not fish or
meat flavoured.
