wow!! That is very interesting...nice to see some competition to windows.
How does it interact with operating programs ie software for my digital
camera designed for use on windows or apple mac? does it offer comparable
quality in it's programs to windows? does it suffer from similar 'bug' type
things as windows does? i can see that it would be very much under the radar
for viruses, which is definitely a bonus. Who wrote it? ex microsofters who
had the sh.ts with the Great Gates?

By "bugs", are you referring to stuff like adware and spyware? If so,
then rest assured that Linux distros are not affected by adware or
spyware. I use Linspire on my laptop, and I can speak from personal
experience when I tell you that I do not get adware or spyware.
As for your digital camera, you should be able to use your camera with
Linux without the need of installing any drivers. With Linspire, all I
do is connect my camera (a Fujifilm FinePix A345) to the computer via
USB, turn the camera on, double-click on LPhoto (a photo management
tool similar to Apple iPhoto), and click on the Import button at the
lower left corner and my photos are imported from the camera to the
computer. I can also plug in a PCMCIA modem card (Zonet ZFM5600CF) and
get online....once again, without installing any drivers. My sound
works perfectly. I use LSongs to manage my mp3 collection and also
listen to Shoutcast-based internet radio stations. And I use K3b to
burn CDs and DVDs (K3b is to Linux as Nero is to Windows).
I have also had no viruses affect my system.
Now I do also use Windows XP on the laptop for recording TV and backing
up my old VHS tapes (using a WinTV USB TV tuner, TMPGEnc DVD Author,
and dvdshrink), but the only time I get online is when I use Linspire.
I have also used Xandros....it's nice, but its CD/DVD burning tool and
its IM client (Kopete) aren't as nice as Linspire's (Linspire uses K3b
for CD/DVD burning and GAIM is the IM client it uses).

Well that has really given me food for thought. I'll have to discuss this
with DH when he gets home. lets just say that if I have another virus
problem, I won't be running out to buy Windows again, now that i know
there's a less virus prone alternative. i might do as you suggested and
trial it in tandem with Windows to see how we go adjusting. I would have
never know about it if you hadn't piped up, thanks!!

You're welcome. Most Linux distros will allow you to set up a "dual
boot" (meaning having Windows on one partition and Linux on another
partition...Linux has to be installed last because a "Windows installed
last" dual-boot will only show Windows (if you have two versions of
Windows installed this way, then both Windows choices will be shown on
the dual-boot screen).
If you decide to try Linspire and/or Xandros and need any help
(installation help or getting certain hardware to work, or what
hardware should work "out of the box"),, then here are some sites for
you to visit :
http://forum.linspire.com (Linspire's forums)
http://forums.xandros.com (Xandros' forums)
http://groups.google.com/group/Linspire (my Linspire group on Google
Groups...not much activity, but I plan on promoting the group at least
once a month)

Well I'm still trying to get the hang of this new machine. i just asked
someone the silly question, 'why is there no floppy drive?' and got laughed
at as floppy disks have apparently gone the way of the dinosaur. so when i
get up the courage i will check out your group.
