Cat toys all around

Kreisleriana - 27 Sep 2004 16:24 GMT Did you ever just think that the world just constantly produces countless new cat toys?
I was awakened last night by the wildest kitty soccer in recent memory-- sounded like a dozen cats-- with extra scuffling and sliding-- donuts and burnouts-- on the hardwood floor.
I turned the light on, and could not see what he was playing with at first-- it was too tiny. But he was really putting on a show-- repeated overshooting his target, and sending himself into little mini side-frenzies that had him leaping to the tops of shelves, and shooting up and down the stairs. What was causing all the commotion? A blueberry. I had spilled some on the floor that morning, and apparently missed one when I was trying to clean them up.
Little goofball. ;)

Nocturne likes to think she is too dignified for toys but we have a photo of her in her youth, chasing a Pepsi can around the kitchen.
Tyche can /always/ find new toys by tipping the garbage pail over. So many delights can be found within!

Ann - 27 Sep 2004 22:47 GMT Ginger (RB) loved to play with string beans. She would hang out in the kitchen until I gave her one. Ann

> Theresa I so wish my cats would play more. Kitty is often too grumpy to play and she doesn't like Boyfriend playing in her presence either and she's effectively stopped him by boxing his ears every time he tries. So, two weeks ago, I bought them a catnip mouse, I'd heard such stories on the group about how much cats like catnip and I thought I'd give it a go. That catnip mouse is spurned. Neither of them has any interest in it whatsoever. I sniffed it (yes, sad, sad, cat slave) to see if it smelt of anything, and to me, it doesn't. Is the scent discernable to hoomins, and if so, do I now need to buy a catnip spray to refresh it with, or am I just wasting my money?

If so, it may need to be refreshed with either some chopped catnip rubbed on it or catnip spray spritzed on it.
If they weren't interested in it when it was new they may not react to catnip - some cats don't.
Each of my girls react to it differently. Bandit, 14, just wants to roll around in it. Demi, 6, likes to play with toys that smell of it. Jessie, 5 likes to eat it. Sammy, 5 1/2 months, likes to scratch at it.

Cali's a definite niphead and loves all things from the big out, Smokey could care less.
Fresh catnip stinks, the stuff in the tub does not have any smell that I've noticed, but then I'm not a cat.
Enfilade - 28 Sep 2004 14:26 GMT If you get good quality dried catnip, you can definitely smell it.
Don't waste your money on that stuff Hartz sells in the grocery store. No odour = no fun.
I get good dried catnip at: a specialty pet boutique, the local Pagan store (ask for the herbs--you're likely to get good quality organically grown herbs) or an herb store. Hoomins sometimes drink catnip tea for stomach complaints, so it should be available if you do some searching and asking.
If they still dont' respond to the good stuff, then your cats are missing the gene required to react to it...about 3 in 10 cats are.

Guess mine are those 3. First I tried the cheap stuff from the grocery store - nothing. Then when I was at the garden store I ran across some seeds and sprinkled them around the tomatos. But they don't react to home grown nip either - green, dried, or in between - nothing.

Hubert has a potpourri fetish. He takes out one piece, bats it around the room a while, then goes to the bowl for another. :-)

Sammy likes to delicately pick out one piece of cellophane-wrapped peppermint and bat that around. I'm constantly finding them all over the floor, sticky with kitten spit.

My Sammy used to do that, too. I had to put a stop to it when I decided to quit smoking and added nicotine lozenges to the bowl.

If your Sammy is anything like my Sammy you certainly would *not* want her taking a stimulant!!! ;>

Nikki will sometimes jump up on the counter (it's allowed around here), snag one cork out of the basket, drop it to the floor, and the chase is on!

That's what always cracks me up about Stinky and the whole cherry deal. When he loses one, he just goes right back to get a new one.
