Still doing the juggling act of treating Hobo's opposing diabetes and
kidney dysfunction plus Speckles' hyperthyroidism and chronic
vomiting, both with special diets, insulin, and umpteen pills.  Now
there's a new medication on the shelf.  Speckles spent an unusually
quiet night but about 4:00 a.m. yesterday, she and Hobo both got me
up.   After settling them down, I noticed a small patch of vomit on
the living-room floor.  Obviously Speckles, Hobo was OK.  It was
fairly dark but I cleaned it up with a paper towel.  When I went to
the kitchen to dispose of it, in the light I saw it was bloody.  Panic
time.  Roused my son and we took off to the emergency clinic.  I'd
baggied the paper towel to show the vet and was relieved when he said
the bright red indicated it came from the esophagus, not her stomach
as I'd feared - it would have been a browner color.  Speckles was
rehydrated, and given a shot of something or other in her rump - Speck
promptly wreaked vengence on the poor tech - she screamed bloody (no
pun intended) murder, slashed the tech's hand, then peed on her!  We
got home about 5:30 a.m.; too late to bother with trying to get back
to sleep.  So we have another vial of medication to add to the four
Speck already has - this one is Carafate, used to treat ulcers.  So
with two elderly sick kitties, it never rains but it pours.  Wonder
what'll happen next???  Poor little sweeties, I ache *for* them when
they'll ailing and hurting.

 Thanks for listening.

I know exacly how you're feeling, Jeanne. As much as I miss Frank and
Nikki, I certainly don't miss medication time at our house. Lots of
purrs on the way for Speckles to feel much better soon, and purrs to you
for all the work ahead with both the cats.

I know how you feel.  And medicating a lot isn't much fun.  But I'm
glad it turned out to be nothing too terrible and hopefully the new
med will take care of it and Speckles will be feeling much better.

Boy, Speckles knows how to express her displeasure!  lol!

You are such a special Kitty Mom-Doctor!  What incredible bonds between pets
that are ill and those who take care of them.  Two of my three are on
medication, one show signs of age and a bit of his problem, I believe I love
them as much as possible every day, yet the next day I love them more.

My thoughts are with you daily as you care for Hobo and Speckles.  I hope
that they respond well to the medication and care and are back frolicking
soon.

Wow, I can relate to most of the above, as Otis has had 8 of his 9
lives already with accidents and thyroid, kidneys and diabetes but
ULCERS - I didn't realise cats got ulcers as well as humans!  Can they
test for helicobacter pylori like they do humans and treat with
anti-biotics?  I had that and have never looked back, just a thought.
My heart goes out to you though, it's hard work isn't it, but they are
sooo worth it, I hate it when Otis gets sick, I get so scared because
he's my only cat and I don't have kids, so yes he is my substitute
child and he's 16, been with me through good and bad times, is daft and
stupid but I'd do anything for him.

Ah, Jeanne, you're now running a nursing home for the elderly.

Get better purrs for Speckles and Hobo, and coping and calming
purrs for yourself.

I can identify with this.  I tended to keep several from a litter of pups so
they all got elderly at the same time and seemed to get health problems at
the same time too.  Or one would improve and another one would get ill right
afterwards.
Lots of empathetic purrs.
