Not that I want to dampen anykitty's fun - but please be careful when using
string - even thick ones like shoe/boot laces! Cats have been known to
*eat* string - and then it wreaks havoc on their intestines! Or else they
can get tangled in it and strangle themselves. *PLEASE* only allow
string-play when a "hoomin" is nearby to supervise, & provide support if
needed.
And this from an evil person who once took a looooong piece of curl-ribbon
and taped it to one of the blades of a ceiling fan, then turned the ceiling
fan on and sat back and LHAO while watching Smokey go berserk trying to
catch it! she caught it, the tape broke loose from the fan-blade, and
Smokey tried to haul her prey off to be killed - her prey was duly taken
away from her and dragged throughout the house by evil person, with Smokey
in hot pursuit. It was fun, but I *never* let Smokey chew on the ribbon -
for more than a few bites - and didn't let her wrap herself up in it either.

Nope, my "kids" don't have any intention of eating the bootlace and I *do*
supervise! I'm more afraid of them strangling themselves than of them
eating it. I don't know if their activities provide them or me with more
entertainment factor. :~)

It's not so much intentions at work here as it is mechanics. Cats' tongues
have tiny, backward-facing "spikes" (which gives their tongues that raspy
feel). Things can get stuck on these spikes and they can't spit something
out of their mouths as we can - the object has nowhere to go except down
their throats. This is especially problematical with something like string
which is lightweight and not easily spit out of even human mouths with our
smooth tongues. Even when cats don't mean to swallow something, sometimes
they have no choice in the matter (have you ever seen a cat pawing at his
mouth trying to get something out?).

Yup. I have to be very careful with string, as Oscar shows more
interest in eating any string she sees than in actually playing with
the toy to which it might be attached.

Persia doesn't play with the bootstring unsupervised. She shows no interest
in eating it but she does tug on it with her paws. The way it hangs from
the door she'd have to be a real athletic cat to hang herself.
She does like my bathrobe belt... she'll practically trip me up to get ahold
of the end of it and start tugging with her teeth. It's a big thick thing,
though, and firmly around my waist. She might not believe this, silly grey
panther, but I'm still bigger than she is! :)
