Dylan was on call at the hospital on Wednesday night.  At Six a m I
woke up with a tightness in my chest.  Or rather, ON my chest.  Smokey
was sitting there, his nose touching mine, exhaling into my nostrils
and drooling on my lip.  When my eyelids fluttered he promptly nipped
me on the nose, then jumped for my face.

I raised my hand to block him, and--being barely awake, not to mention
I don't think he expected it--he fell off me, and off the bed.  I
hadn't meant to push him off the bed, but such was the result.  And I
HISSED at him to express my displeasure at his aggressiveness.

Well.

An hour and a half later, I was awakened by three taps on my
shoulder...that's Nox, requesting breakfast.  Kumani was circling,
walking over me too.  But...where was Smokey?  No grey boy.  No
Smokey-song.

When my feet hit the floor I saw him sitting pretty by the foot of the
bed, on the floor.  He might well have been like that the whole hour
and a half.  Only when I got up did he start to warble, and he's been
clingy ever since.

I had to discipline him that way--I can't let him think that it's okay
to lunge at people's faces or to bite on the face--but I do hope I
haven't set him back too far into his insecurities.

I think he took it in the way he'd take another cat hitting him when he'd
hit that cat first..........

When I was in Belize, a huge 8" scorpion fell out of the roof and
immediately had the interest of 3 cats. Fortunately I saw it and ran
over. The ONLY way I could get their attention very quickly and get them
to back off at once was to hiss very loudly at it.

They were all wary of me for a few hours, then they were fine, but they
never went near a scorpion again AFAIK.

Sometimes you have to tell them something in "Cat".

And that was the proper response if  he was being excessively aggressive!
Biting (gentle nips) is one thing; an attack (so to speak) is not
acceptible.

It's merely asserting who is who.  Yes, we are all *cat slaves* but that
doesn't include being mauled by them.
