Dear all
Can we utilise the power of the purr for my SO Dave? He did something
to his foot, looked like a skin infection that has scabbed over so he
can't walk. (Before you point out the obvious, he has such a phobia of
hospitals and doctors that if he wanted to go I'd be calling the
undertaker!) and is reduced to sitting about and driving me up the
walls. He needs to move it but says it hurts too much (The man is a
coward) also as he can't get up he is not being an efficient cat slave
so purrs please (The Furballs can only do so much!)

Lesley, has Dave been tested for diabetes? I know he hates doctors and
stuff, but that's pretty alarming. Purrs for a resolution and healing.

It has crossed my mind but he doesn't have any other symptoms and it
means getting him near a doctor and I don't have a set of tranquilliser
darts handy nor am I strong enough to drag him! Anyway he's allegedly
sane (okay he's been with me for 28 years so I'll settle for
"allegedly") it's just he has an extreme phobia about the medical
profession probably caused by the fact he had several major operations
before he was 5 due to the fact that he has congenital ulnar absences.
The last time he had anything like this (about 4 years ago) he went to
the doctor (He had to go on an unrelated matter) and the doctor wasn't
worried about it.
Personally I think it might be down to wandering around the flat bare
footed and not washing his feet enough.....He's been told that if it's
no better by the weekend then we ARE going to hospital, phobia or no
phobia

Keep an eye out for any sign of spreading infection, particularly red
streaks. If you see red streaks, he needs to go to the hospital
immediately, as blood poisoning can be fatal.

Actually whatever the infection was it was superficial and has more or
less healed up- it's just caused a large area of skin around his ankle
to scab overand tighten up, where the scabs are now coming away the
underlying skin looks healthy. Yesterday he managed a few steps and he
says it doesn't feel so tight so he's going to try and do a bit more
today so keep purring it seems to be working!
Have to tell you this one. Last night I'm sitting watching telly and
out of the corner of my eye I see Sarrasine at the DVD rack again. This
rack was not put together by competent people ie Dave and me and
doesn't hold the discs in for quite a bit of one side of it. Sarrasine
just loves to stretch out on it and push the DVD's out with her nose.
So I am watching her and lo and behold slowly "Monty Python and the
Holy Grail" (Can't fault her taste) starts to slide out.
"Sarrasine, if you keep doing that you're going out" I said
She went round to the front of the stand and pushed it back in at once!
We just looked at each other in amazement! I mean we know she's a
criminal genius and all that but we didn't know she could understand
long sentences

This is good to hear. I had the (evidently false) impression that the
wound was being slow to heal. I always get impatient waiting for a
scab to come completely off, but learned as a child (as do most
people) that trying to help the peeling process along doesn't help.

It seems to have taken a long time but that's probably more to do with
my perception than real time, it started just before Xmas and it's
nearly all healed apart from one scab which is right where you bend
your ankle to stand up and that's finally coming away and yes I've been
tempted to rip it off more than once!
> Smart cat! Is she related to Macavity the Mystery Cat?
She could give him lessons! At 10 weeks old she worked out how to open
bags of kitten kibble and how to maximise the amount she could pick out
with one paw by licking the paw before scooping the kibble out!!

I hope Heidi doesn't take to doing that. Damp kibble doesn't
roll or scoot as well as dry, and half her daily exercise comes
from pulling her kibbles out one at time (after she's really had
enough to eat) and chasing them for a bit before consuming them.

I really don't think an extreme phobia about the medical profession is
babyish, it must make life very difficult for Dave, and I'm sure he'd change
it if he could.

Probably would. He always worries that if he goes near them they will
find something wrong. Unfortunately he's not so long ago had that
belief bolstered by my best friend (apart from Dave) Mick who went to
the doctor with a cold that he couldn't shake and was soon hearing
those two little words no-one wants to here i.e. "It's cancer"

Oh, I know, it wasn't a cut to Dave! Gosh, I'm a fine one to talk; I broke
my hand and haven't had it treated. I never, ever go to the doctor and I'm
a mess. I was just referring to the male "gene" that causes them to whine
at the slightest bit of discomfort. You know the routine, "Get me a glass
of water, make me breakfast, oh groan, groan, get me the remote...." <g>

I've had enough of that since he did it! I told him that when he got
better I was going to bed for the weekend so he could find out what its
like to be doing everything (Funny he hasn't tried to get better
since....)

We'll send some of our most powerful purrs, because that really
sounds a little scary, Lesley. Hope you can get him to doctor
somehow.
---------- Aside ------------
I've been watching men and women and the "time to get to a
doctor" issue for half a century now, and you know what, guys?
It's just not fair; a lot of us are not treating our women with
the consideration or respect due them. They shouldn't have to
push that hard, and they shouldn't have to watch us or nurse us
through the consequences of our stubbornness.
I would really love to see every man who is now, or ever hopes
to be, hooked up with a woman take this solemn vow:
"I promise, upon pain of bereavement, that if she ever tells me
it's time for me to see a doctor, I will take no time to make
excuses, nor give any scope to my fears, but will immediately
and uncomplainingly pick up the phone and make the appointment."
(Of course, you'll have to ask her for the number, but she'll be
happy to supply it.)

I have read that diabetics can lose a leg from a simple infection. Tell

So, Dave has a mental condition (his phobia) that makes him a threat
to himself? In most.many/all US states that would be grounds for
involuntary commitment for treatment.
