Purrs for a buddy and his RB Hobbes

Last week my friend Brian lost his dear cat Hobbes to complications of
kidney failure. He was barely ten years old.

Brian is the last of my friends to have stuck by me after meeting Louie.
(It takes a marriage to tell you who your friends are; I knew who the
bigots were PDQ.) In 1995 Brian moved to Florida with his partner Ian,
bought a house, and adopted Hobbes as the "inaugural cat." To Brian, a
lifelong animal lover, a house isn't a home until someone's purring in
it. Hobbes was a handsome and feisty fellow, lithe and beautifully
marked with distinct stripes, who was ornery until the very end. The
good ornery that is, the kind that says there is life yet to be had, and
strength. Then all at once, the poor fellow lost it, and collapsed in
his own litter box. The kidneys had won. He was only ten, and Brian and
Ian had had him from a tiny kitten.

I know my old buddy, how he tries to be pragmatic and says he's got the
stiff upper lip and he'd been preparing, blah-blah-blah bull. Who can
prepare for these things, even knowing it must come eventually? Brian's
devastated. Hobbes was, to him, the start of a new life and proof in his
eyes that he and Ian are a true couple. They were devoted to Hobbes,
making sure he had his medicines and fluid IV's, and loved him to
distraction. I didn't know Hobbes, but I knew he got the best of love
and care. Please purr a few for Brian and Ian, and their first furbaby
who hadn't been here long enough.

Blessed be,
Baha

Purrs for Brian's broken heart and a candle will be lit for Hobbes too, to
light his passage to the bridge tonight.

BTW, I can't believe you lost "friends" because of who you married!  Sheesh,
and good riddance!

Thanks CatNipped...I knew you'd be one of those level-headed people who took
their clear-thinking pills!

When we got married, Ian scoured Tampa for a traditional Indian man's suit, and
insisted on wearing a turban. In his suit, with his beard and turban, the
Indians at the temple didn't make a comment; they figured he was a distant
relative of Louie's! When Ian griped that no one said anything, Louie corrected
him; the Indians were giving him the highest praise, in that they thought he was
one of them. They thought it was the coolest thing to bring a little diversity
into the friendship.

I miss those guys. I hope they're okay. I'm told Brian spends all his time alone
recently. I hope he calls or answers an email. I'll tell him you'll send a
little shining light to Hobbes, who without a doubt must be runnign about like a
youthful fellow in the summer-land.

Blessed be,
Baha

I just don't understand those who hate and fear diversity.  To me the world
would be such a *BORING* place if everyone in it were just like me!.  How
could anyone learn anything new, how could anyone learn to look at things
from a different angle, how could anyone want to get out of bed in the
morning if every person in the world were a clone of themselves.  Again,
sheesh!

I am sure Hobbes is either running around chasing butterflies or meatloafing
in a sunbeam.  I wish Brian and Ian consolation in their grief and I hope
the mothership sends them a new master very soon.

It reminds me of how a group of French-Canadien soldiers thought I was
also French-Canadien simply because I would speak to them in
French...despite my German/English accent and relatively limited
vocabulary.  Unreal!

Poor Brian and Ian, that's very sad! I hope Hobbes had a gentle journey
over the bridge, and is napping on a sunny window sill in the
summerland while he waits for his Daddies to join him.  Still, although
his life was far too short, Hobbes was a fortunate cat to have had  two
such loving slaves. I know it's too soon, but with Brian feeling that a
house is not a home unless someone is purring in it, I'm sure Hobbes
won't be the last cat he and Ian will find to love.  I hope they won't
wait long to find a worthy successor, for both their own sakes and the
sake of some lucky cat or cats in need of a new home.

heal soon and well, and may their next master appear before too
long.

Purrs for Brian & Ian. I'm quite sure Hobbes has gone to RB with the
knowledge that he was a very much loved part of the family.
