Well, it didn't happen. Of *course* yesterday was Friday the 13th.
He was scheduled for a teeth cleaning and after his three days of
antibiotic capsules, he was taken in at 8:00 a.m., right at the
beginning of a severe thunderstorm. Made for a great driving
experience. We left him there and waited for the call to come get
him. We got a call about noon all right. Because Hobo is elderly and
diabetic, the vet did some preliminary testing before administering
the anesthetic. Unfortunately, Hobo got a double whammy. Not only
diabetes but his kidneys are failing. So no anesthetic and no dental
work. His diet has been a high-protein diabetes-management food which
is now history - to be controlled only by his insulin - and placed on
a kidney-management diet. Which he's not eating too well. Poor old
guy has to face a battle on two fronts. And we are beside ourselves.
Good old Friday the 13th!!!
Thanks for listening. Please keep your fingers crossed for him, and
I'm sure a purr or two would be helpful.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Jeanne. Poor Hobo. How old is he? Sending
purrs that the kidney management diet will give him lots more time with
you and that the diabetes can be controlled well enough with insulin.

Thank you, Britta. Hobo is not *old* but is a bit elderly -
he'll be 14 in a couple of months. We're hoping we can manage these
diseases with the least stress on him. He's such a stoic he looks and
acts the same, sick or well. We'll keep him closely monitored.
Thanks again for your good wishes.

We appreciate the purrs, Marina. Hobo has always been a good
eater and it's sad to see him go to his food bowl, take a sniff or a
bite or two, then walk away. Hoping in due time he'll take a liking
to it. *Soon*!!!.... The teeth part is a minor concern we'll deal

Thank you so much - the purrs are bound to help. Hobo did receive
a Sub-Q at the vet's Friday and she advised one a week would be enough
at this point. He doesn't like his new diet but he *must* eat, not
only for the CRF but he can't have his insulin unless he does. It's

Thank you, Cheryl. It's a little "weird" trying to treat Hobo for
two different problems at the same time (as well as also treating
Speckles for her hyperthyroidism) but we'll manage somehow, thanks to

Thanks for the warning. We checked it out and the Greenies are now

stories, so many dogs dying, and lawsuits in the works, we won't take
the chance that ours could be the first kitties. We're indebted to

I'm sorry to hear it! It's hard to treat two different conditions
when the treatments are in opposition. I hope you find a good compromise
between the two. Are there complex carbs that a cat can eat? Those are
better for a diabetic because they don't break down into sugar as
quickly, so they don't overwhelm the system with sugars. Foods such as
vegetables and whole grains are complex carbs.
I've never tried feeding these foods to a cat, but the human diabetics
I know get their carbs in this way, rather than with refined carbs or
white rice, which are much more glycemic (turn into sugar quickly). I
guess if a cat can supplement its meat with rice or potatoes, they could
just as easily get some veggies into the mix, or brown rice. Or maybe he
could chomp on grass more? Meanwhile, subq fluids would help a lot with
the kidney failure.
Purrs for getting all of it under control!

Gee, I don't know, Joyce, but will check into it. Hobo has had the
diabetic's food for two years now - it's a Purina brand sold only
through a vet and only certain vets stock it. Two years' worth of
high protein wreaked havoc on his kidneys apparently so he's now on
the kidney diet (also Purina) - the main product in both foods is
liver.
>Maybe he could chomp on grass more? Meanwhile, subq fluids would help a lot with
>the kidney failure.
He's an indoor-only cat and, unfortunately, I've never brought grass
for him. Good idea, I'll get some. Right now we're giving him
Greenies. Hobo did receive a Sub-Q at the vet's Friday and she
recommends it once a week for the present.
Thank you for the purrs and the good tips. Appreciate it.

Thank you for your kind thoughts and the purrs. We've had several
CRF kitties in the past - and they *all* hated the kidney diet!
Wonder why that is? Hobo will condescend to eat a little - or
starve - just enough so he can be given the insulin. No food, no
insulin - so he *must* eat it. I'm sure it'll get easier in time.

Maybe you've tried it, maybe this is the food that Hobo hates, but Frank
used to like Waltham's Renal wet food in pouches. It comes in two
flavours: beef and chicken. I don't know if it's available on that side

Poor Hobo! I'm sorry Jeanne. Sometimes you have to consider, too, whether
changing his diet (if he's eating well on his old food) is worth it. I
don't know how old Hobo is but maybe you can manage his kidney issues with
sub-q fluids. I don't know -- I just remember how much my cat Frodo loved
his food; he was diagnosed at 15 with kidney disease. I talked with my vet
and we tried managing his kidney disease with fluid therapy. You're kind of
stuck between a rock and a hard place and I'm so sorry.

Hobo *loves* his old food. Actually he probably over-ate. His only
diet for two years. But if the high-protein content brought on the
kidney problem, I'm scared to keep him on it. Sure would be nice if I
could.
>don't know how old Hobo is but maybe you can manage his kidney issues with

He will be 14 in a couple of months. Not really old but creeping up
on elderly. He did receive a Sub-Q Friday at the vet's and she
advised he'd probably need one once a week. He'll be retested first
and we'll go on from there. How long did Frodo need them?
Thank you for your kind thoughts. They are much appreciated.

Frodo was diagnosed at 15 and to me it was quite amazing but he did really
well with the sub-q fluids and my husband and I both learned to give them to
him on a daily basis (100 ml once a day). I had to get over my squeamishness
at giving him the injection but when I saw how much better he felt (and I
think he knew it, too) afterwards it was worth it. I always gave him a
special treat after his fluids, too. He was on them for 5 years and lived to
be 3 weeks short of 21. Another older kitty we had, Shetra, was diagnosed
also at 15 and did well on daily sub-q therapy for 2 years.

Wow! Once a day?? For five years??? That *is* truly amazing. I'm
so glad he could stay with you that long. I hope Hobo can do as well.
I don't think I could ever do the IV thing. I tried it with our
kitty, Custard, several years ago and gave up. Took her to the vet
three times a week for her Sub-Q. She only lived a year more but then
she was 18 when she started, already pretty old. Maybe if she'd had a
daily treatment she could have lived longer but....
Thanks for the input.

I had a cat who lived 5 years getting subq fluids. Diagnosed at 16, lived
to 21. But we didn't give her the fluids every day. In fact, sometimes we
went several months in between treatments, depending on how she seemed.
Her health would fluctuate. The most frequent treatments were 2-3 times
a week.
