I have a question. Tom and I are planning a trip to Burope this fall,
we're cashing in some miles and getting a free flight to London. Our
original plan was to fly directly to Rome, but apparently it's a very
popular destination and free flights are hard to come by. :)
Anyhow, so the plan is to get the free tickets to London and purchase
flights to Rome from London. We do plan on spending 2-3 nights in
London, since I've never been there. Flying out of Heathrow it's only
$150 USD per person, but flying out of Gatwick is twice as much!
My question. How hard is it to connect from Gatwick to Heathrow? Is
there convenient transportation available? Or should we try to fly to
Heathrow from the US? We would only need transportation from airport to
airport once.
Any advice would be most appreciated. :)

Cool! That's a lot of airmiles you have there :-)
There are 3 ways to get between the two airports. It takes around an
hour and a half at the most by road, depending largely on traffic - can
be less (maybe an hour if you're lucky) - but bear in mind that the M25
(London Orbital motorway) is the busiest road in the country and can
slow to a crawl in peak times.

1. You can take an express coach directly between the two airports. This
is is the most stress-free way especially if you have lots of luggage
and are tired from a long flight. I would personally do this if I had to
make this journey without a car.

2. You can take the Gatwick Express train from Gatwick into central
London (London Victoria Station), get a taxi from Victoria to Paddington
Station, then take the Heathrow Express train to Heathrow airport from
Paddington. If you have time to kill and want to go to central London,
you could do this and use left luggage facilities at either Paddington
or Victoria. This is probably quite expensive.

3. You can take a taxi between the two airports. Most convenient, and
probably only slightly more than the combined train fares.

Here is more information about these ways:

From http://www.baa.com/
and follow the link to 'London Gatwick' and 'travel between airports'.

Travel between Airports

There are various ways of travelling between our airports. To see the
options available view our map

By Coach
Heathrow – Gatwick
The National Express 700 runs every 15-20 minutes in the morning, from
outside Terminals 1, 3 and 4. It takes approximately 70 minutes to
Gatwick's North and South Terminals. The cost is £17.50. After 12:00 the
service operates every 30 minutes until 22:30. Tickets can be purchased
at the Bus and Coach information desks located in Terminals 1, 3 and 4
or on the bus itself; subject to availability. The coaches pick up at
the arrivals level of Terminals 1, 3 and 4 and set down at the
departures level. For Terminal 2, coaches pick up and set down at the
departures level.

National Express coaches 707, 717, 727 and 797 also operate half hourly
to Gatwick and the journey takes approximately 70 minutes. Coaches run
from the central bus station at Heathrow for Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and
from outside Terminal 4 arrivals. They set down outside Gatwick North
and South Terminals. Adult fares are £17.50 single. Tickets can be
purchased from the travel centre at the central bus station or from the
Bus and Coach information desk on the forecourt of Terminal 4 arrivals.

To book tickets and for further timetable information, please call 08705
808 080 (UK only) or visit www.nationalexpress.com

By Train
Heathrow – Gatwick
The Gatwick Express departs every 15 minutes from London Victoria
station and takes just 30 minutes to Gatwick South Terminal. Passengers
requiring the North Terminal should take the free transit between
terminals, which is just upstairs from the train platforms. Gatwick
Express trains, from the airport to Victoria station, also depart at 15
minute intervals and have a journey time of 30 minutes.

http://www.gatwickexpress.com/

The Heathrow Express departs from Paddington and the airport stations
(Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and Terminal 4) every 15 minutes, with a journey
time of 15 minutes. Heathrow Connect services operate between the same
stations, but run half hourly and are a slower, stopping service.
Passengers can also travel to and from Heathrow Airport and the centre
of London on the Piccadilly line tube. Passengers can travel between
Victoria and Paddington stations by bus, tube or taxi.

Speaking as an ex-immigration officer who worked at Heathrow and lived
near Gatwick, it's very easy. There is a Heathrow/Gatwick bus that goes
every hour I think and it's an exceptionally easy connection. You do
need to allow considerable time though as the M25 is a bitch and the
journey is at least an hour when the traffic is clear on a good day.

If you're coming to London for a few days, I have to say that a
catslaves meet is virtually compulsory!!

Absolutely! The dates we're thinking of spending in London are October
11-14 or so. I figured we could at least meet for lunch or something. :)

I could do it too, but I'd need a few week's notice of the actual date, as
I'd have to take a couple of days off work. It would be great to meet more
of you.

I second that, about the Catslaves meet that is!  I wouldn't recommend
a black cab personally, it would cost an absolute fortune, I remember
getting one over 20 years ago and it was £25 just from Heathrow to
Battersea, so I'm guessing it would be at least double that, I know it
would be the most comfortable way, but I'd never do it as you can't
second guess the traffic nor how long the journey would take, unless
you could share with other people going to Gatwick and split the fare?

Ryanair has some unbelievably cheap seats from Stanstead airport out of
London.  Its a bit of a haul requiring either a bus or train but, if you can
make your connection and save a whole bunch, its worth it.  We did this with
our two kids in tow two years ago.   Sometimes, flights can be as low as $20
a person if they're just trying to fill a flight.  We paid that for one leg
of our Ireland trip.  Gatwick to Heathrow is really easy to do though.

Victor, just saw this --

I would caution you to be careful with free plane tickets out of the
country.  I got a "free" ticket with DH's miles two years ago, and
they would only give me one-hop flights, even though there is a direct
flight to Frankfurt on United!  Grr!  Then they ended up giving me a
flight with about an hour's layover.  If I had stowed luggage, I never
would have made it onto the second plane on the way back.  Your stuff
has to go through customs.  As it was, I had to do some begging to cut
through the baggage line.  And when you're jetlagged, the last thing
you need is to try to rush through a strange airport.

So, anyway, whatever you do, make sure you get tickets with enough of
a layover that you won't be freaking out about whether you'll make
your second plane.
