'NipHeads!

What would turn a normally level-headed cat into a 'niphead?  I've
tried several times to see if Rita was interested, but she was
totally oblivious to catnip.  Then last night I thought I'd try
another pinch, and she went totally crazy on me!  I sport a few
fresh scratches this morning from her revellings.  All I had to
do was touch her and she's roll over, grab my hand and bunny-kick
my arm.  Ouch!  Shortly after that she fell into an exhausted
sleep.
Very strange.  She's not a kitten at all.  The vet says she's over
a year old.
I have a 'niphead!  Oh no!  heehee

I don't know for sure, but I think all kittens are immune to its effects and
they don't start enjoying it until around 1 year of age.

So, this just emphasizes that the SPCA was wrong when they said she
was 2 years old?  Now I have to recalculate her possible birthday.
Hmm...

Oh, I don't know about that - it's possible.  But it's also possible she
just decided she liked it - or it was a particularly potent batch - cats are
weird that way and love to keep us guessing.

I am going right now to test some on Dante just for fun.  He has been
immune to nip thus far, and frankly, he doesn't seem to need it to be
goofy. ;)

Please let us know if he does - I'd like to know if this is correct or if
it's just a myth.

Well, Lori, he was interested, but no more interested than he is in
anything else (which is *very, LOL).  His reaction was certainly not
like Stinky's, who practically rips the container out of my hand. ;)
Certainly not as strong as his reaction to yogurt and CHIKKEN
TREETZ!!!  ;)

So it seems to hold true for Dante-- I'll check back in a couple of
months.

You mean about kittens not being interested in catnip?  Oh, that's
definitely true. I've seen it before.  It's just that Rita was
*supposed* to be 2 years old when I got her, but my vet said that
she looked closer to 1 year, but that's still old enough to like
catnip, and she didn't.  Now, almost a full year later, she's very
interested in it.  So.....is she 3 years old, or 2 years old, or
was she even younger when I got her, almost a year ago?

But I've had kittens in the past, who weren't interested in catnip,
but saw them attack it when they were older than 6 months.

Vino was about 6 months when he first showed real interest.

If they don't feel the effects until around a year old, then Qui Gun Kit is
an old cat in a young body.  He's been a nipaholic for several months now.
He'll be a year old on March 28.

Caliban's been into 'nip since he got here in August, when he was about
4 months old.

I'd say "most kittens", not "all kittens". Ranger started getting
attracted to nip at 6 months of age. Sammy still isn't interested in it
and he's 2 years old.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the aromatic portions of
catnip are very similar to cat sex hormones, and affect *that* part of
their fuzzy brains.  So it would make sense that kittens are not
usually attuned to it, and also that males tend to be more interested
in catnip than females.  Of course, there are no absolutes with cats,
as we all know!

Nope - all 3 of mine (2 girls and one boy) are insane over the stuff!

Of my two, the female is the greater nip-head.  Will appreciates
it and will lick at any toy to which it is applied, but Heidi
starts acting goofy and rolling on the floor before she's even
located the source.

Well Lily has obviously been indoctrinated into the "Don't do drugs"
campaign. Cat nip has no effect on her whatsoever, and whilst the other
guys get stoned she like....MOM!!!! They're doing STUFF!!!!
