Emergency Purrs, Please

This is exactly what I have been afraid of all winter. Wildfires have
broken out all around us. DH went to check on his parents and just
called and told me my friend's house is burning. She was walking down
the road and they won't let her near. I know she has animals in there.
I have all the cats in their carriers. They are not happy but it won't
kill them to stay there a couple of hours. I can't afford to have to
chase them. I figure they will probably evacuate all of us if it gets
any closer. I can see the helicopters trying to put the fire out. The
sun is completely  occluded with smoke it looks so eerie. Like the
whole world is one fire.
I will be fine, I have a car and the cats are trapped already. I don't
know what we will do about the cows. I suppose if it gets that bad I
should cut the fence.

Purrs are appreciated!

Steve, if you see this, look to your north and east. I'm sure you can
see the smoke.
Steve Touchstone - 13 Jan 2006 22:07 GMT
Sorry I'm late sending purrs, but glad to hear the wind shift came in
time for your home. What we really need is some rain - so purrs that
the slim chance of rain over the weekend comes through. Unfortunately,
that forecast also calls for wind, ranging from 10-30mph, for the next
five days - something we could do without with everything a tinderbox.
(Rant - and I still see people flipping cigarettes out their car
window all the time!)

Purrs that you and your crew are safe! Even more purrs that the
firefighters put it out before it goes any further. I'm so sorry
about your friend and her pets.

This is eerie for me because last night I had a vivid dream of being
surrounded by fire. No matter where I went, thinking I was escaping,
I would emerge into another place where there was also fire. Eventually
it became clear that everything was on fire, and it was slowly closing
in.

Hi Nan-We are a long way from Tulsa. Not sure how many miles, but it
takes over  two hours to get there from here. We are in the south
central part of the state.  I don't think they have had as much of a
problem as other parts of the state. The climate there doesn't seem to
be as harsh as it is here. I've always thought the lay of the land
there was much prettier than it is here.
If you ever visit though, give me a call!

Lots and lots of purrs. I can remember what its like for the sun to be
occluded with smoke (or is a blood red colour from the smoke), and be on
evacuation alert so you have my utmost sympathy and many many purrs.

We're also purring for the other people in your area that they leave instead
of trying to fight the fire. I'd hate to have my house burnt down too, but
my family (two and four foot) are far more precious than any other thing in
the house.

We just got very lucky this afternoon. A cold front came through, and
the wind changed direction out of the north abruptly about the time the
fire was about five miles from us. So everything is fine here. Thank
you all so much.

Unfortunately, when the wind changed it blew toward my inlaws house.
They almost lost their house, did lose their barn. My DH & son went out
there to help; DS had no business going because he has mild asthma. DH
called earlier and they have him in the back of the ambulance giving
him oxygen, tried to get him to go to the hospital but he won't. But DH
said he was much better, thank God. It is pitch dark now so it will be
hard to tell how much damage there really is till tomorrow.

Thanks again, so very much.

Thank goodness!!  I read this post at work and worried about y'all all
afternoon!  We've been very lucky here, too.  One small burn about 2
miles up the road, but apparently someone was on the ball because it
didn't get very far.  I've also put out all the cat carriers and, at
the first sign of trouble, all cats WILL be popped into their carriers
until we're sure it's safe.  They can complain all they want!

Sorry about your inlaws barn and your friend's house, though.  Damn
this drought!!!!

I don't know. I lost track of her, I don't know where she ended up
spending the night.  DH said her house and barns are burned to the
ground, as is four other houses on that mile. DH's parents lost their
barns and chicken house. I think they are pretty upset about that, they
were pretty attached to their laying hens. They had names and
everything. They weren't locked up but I guess didn't have the sense to
get out, and the firefighters wouldn't let FIL go down there. One of
their barn cats is missing but the rest are accounted for. This was a
shy one. I still think she is probably scared and hiding somewhere and
will be found. I hope so anyway.

True. At work we listen to a scanner and heard a couple complaints
about someone welding yesterday or the day before. I don't know about
your county, but we're under a red flag fire alert in Comanche County.
So far I haven't heard about a ban on outdoor welding, but it's common
sense that when the wind is gusting to 20-30 mph, you don't want
sparks flying around all these dry weeds/grass.

That's terrible about your friend's house.  I hope you and your animals
stay safe. That was a good idea to crate the cats in advance.
I assume you have your drivers license and car keys handy. Just in case, you
should also gather up your check book and any other bank books you might
have. If your book is low on checks, take a box of checks with you. Also
passport, credit cards and keys to safe deposit box.
Add your address book.
Remember the catfood and some food dishes.  If you've got some feliway, keep
it handy.
I hope all of this turns out to be totally unnecessary.
