Handmade felted wool cat bad

Well, after the first attempt at one of those knitted cat beds, my
mom got frustrated with trying to felt it. It wouldn't felt! She
wrote to the owner of that web site that was mentioned here, and
she recommended a brand of wool for it. She said the knitting part
was fun, and went quick. The felting took two washes, and left
fuzz in the washing machine, but she was thrilled at how it came
out. She was bound and determined to make this! :) She said she
has to make 3 more for my other cats, and 2 for my sisters cats,
but I told her the one is fine, and that they'd share it (they
will, too. They rotate cat beds). She's going to make one more,
but I know it had to have been expensive.

Here it is! I won't see her for another week, but I told her as
soon as I see a cat in it, she's getting a picture. :)

Cool.

Gorgeous color!  Someone showed me how to knit over Christmas. I still
suck at it and I only know how to do straight lines. I swear, I'm
printing out instructions and taking them to a knitting class. I really
want to know how to do those.

I used to know how to knit. I need to get a refresher so I can make
some of these! They'd make great gifts. And would be good for a
silent auction we do every year. From what I hear, it's all knitted
as a single piece, looks sort of lopsided, but should be an easy
learner project. :) If you get the right materials, it should be
easy. Wrong wool, and you end up with a flad bed.  Like my mom's
first try. Oh, they'll like it anyway.

Do you know where I could get the pattern for these?

Thanks!  But, oh my, that's a *LOT* more complicated than what I can do
(knit and purl in a single row with two needles).

Does it look hard? I haven't looked at it because it wouldn't mean
anything to me until I get a refresher. Actually, all I've ever made
are scarves!

To me it does, but then I've never learned anything except knit and purl -
two needles, no circles (or "rounds" as they call them here).

Hey girl...thats really awsome!!
I love the color too...very nice idea!
My MoonShadow is still sleeping in his 'spoiled' bed!!
Lil stinker thinks he is king in that bed..it's so real looking, just like a
bed.
I need to get it together now that things have settled down in life again
and get a yahoo photo album together and show my 'owner' off also :)

Wow, Cheryl - it's beautiful!  It wouldn't be hard to knit, just time
consuming, unless you are a quick knitter (I'm not).  I think the brand
of yarn you use makes a lot of difference.  She picked a really pretty
color!

Wow, that's really nice!  I should make one of those for Vino.  I wonder
if you could crochet it instead?  I only know how to crochet, not knit.
Although I could probably learn knitting if I tried.  Is there a site
with the instructions?
I actually just finished a crochet sweater that I've been working on for
over 2 months.  Whew!  big project complete, great feeling :-)

Ok, I looked online for this cat bed and found this site:

I love all the pics of the kitties in their beds!  I *so* want to make
one now!

On this page, Manchego’s kitty pi is crocheted and felted.

I found a crochet pattern at
http://www.moonarts.com/blog/free_patterns/pages/kitty-cozy-print.htm
but it's not felted.

Was going to add this, but it's knitted also.
http://webhome.idirect.com/~quanah/patcatb.html

However, going with the info from that site, one might be able to adjust
the crocheted pattern above.  They made their circles 25" before
felting, so couldn't one just keep going on the crocheted version making
sure the bottom is 22" before starting the sides? Add three inches or
so, and then felt.  This site said 22" unfelted equals 15" felted. It's
been so long since I've crocheted, I'm not sure if this would work or
not.

Found Crochet for Pets links at
http://home.inreach.com/marthac/pets.html
No kitty bed. :-( However, they do have a link to kitty weed toy.

Yeah, I was looking around yesterday and I think it could be done in
crochet easily.  Just crochet the same size as the knit one and then
felt.  I guess the big trick with it is to get the right kind of wool
that felts.  Here in Thailand, I have the problem of the language
barrier so it's hard to ask advice like that of a store person.  Maybe
I'll have to wait until we get to Australia to begin this project.

Well, certainly in Australia, wool will be plentiful!

It's very nice! My niece gave me a knitted catbed for Yule, but I
haven't brought it home yet because of the ringworm. I'm not bringing it
home until the cats are declared absolutely free of it, so as not to
contaminate the bed.

I don't blame you! Hopefully they get a clean bill of health very
soon. Do they have to be dipped any more?

Well, the shampoo ran out after just one dip, which I told TED, and she
didn't say to get another bottle, so I guess I'll at least wait for the
results of this latest test. It takes a while, because they have to do a
culture.

What kind of yarn do you use.  Sorry for joining late in the discussion.  I
would love to see the link to the website for making this.  How much do you
think it costs to make one of these beds?  they are gorgeous.

I'm not sure of what she spent but my mom was told by the woman who
created the pattern to use Lion Wool.
http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/yarnInfo.cgi?yarnPage=1694550

The link to the site with the pattern is

I love the gallery page. :) Someone on this group posted that link a
while back and it was just too cute not to share with my mom. Then
she decided to try making one.

What a beautiful bed.  I am not a very good knitter myself, I can only knit
scarves, baby mittens, bootees, baby's jackets and helmets for baby boys.
I sent the pattern to my aunt who is a wonderful knitter, she knitted all my
throws you can see on my cat pics.  She's up for making one, but at the
moment she has only acrylic "wool" in stock which she says won't felt.
Advice about what wool to use (UK) appreciated.

I hope I can learn how to make them! This is what my mom used:

Not sure about availability in the UK, though.

Seems like it's just available in the USA.  No worries, my aunt is very
resourceful, I'm sure we'll find some suitable wool between us eventually.

He had his 80th birthday on Dec 21, and we made it a special occasion.  He
had two birthday cakes, one at lunch time and the other in the evening when
they went out for an Indian meal.
I don't think we'll have him much longer :-((
He had to be admitted to hospital with a heart scare on Wednesday, it turned
out his Digoxin meds had built up too much.   He went in at 12.30 pm and
didn't get a bed until 1.30 a.m the next morning.
It is a special heart hospital.  Poor Auntie Margaret was so freaked out she
had two angina attacks herself while she was there.  I asked her if she'd
told them about it.  "No, of course not." she said, "I figured they'd pick
me up off the floor if they had to."
My aunt is one amazing woman.  She came to stay, bringing my uncle, post
stroke, in Sept 04 to look after me and my chickens following my last eye
op, having had zero experience of chicken/goose care, and we are talking
about nearly an hour to take care of them in the morning and some fierce
cockerels to deal with.
She managed as if she was born to it.
Then she looked after me after my hysterectomy in May, this time at her
house.  I never had to lift a finger while I was there.

My uncle and her have been together since they were 16. First love and all
that.  She has never spent a day and night alone in her life, so I don't
know what she will do when he's gone, simply because she has done everything
for him all his life, not because she will miss what he does for her.  She
is very strong though, I think she'll be okay.

When my uncle was here he did not want to accept that Boyfriend didn't want
to know him.  Every morning Boyfie would be in and as soon as Uncle Bryan
got up, Boyfie would go out.  Eventually, a day before Uncle went home
Boyfriend allowed him a tiny scritch and stroke which he still talks about.
Kitty attached herself to his chest all the time.  He was very kind about
it, but he really didn't want it.   Every time he got up from a chair he had
to unattach claws from his sweater and put a little cat back down on the
floor.

It's hard when the heart has to let go.  I hope your aunt can take care of
herself when he's gone.  Is there an option that she might be able to come
and live with you?  I can't imagine living alone - I've never had to do so
either.

She can not just take care of herself, she can take care of anyone else who
might need it!

> Is there an option that she might be able to come and live with you?

It won't be necessary, she has a huge extended family for support and
besides that, she wouldn't want to!

It has advantages.  I have the tv remote control in my power. I have learned
how to deal with big spiders.  I can sprawl out all over the bed.

There are disadvantages too, no one to hold a fencepost when I need to
sledgehammer it into the ground..
