Miranda's new fave food

Marina - 10 Jan 2006 05:42 GMT Since I will only have one functional upper front tooth for a couple of weeks ahead, I've been looking around for something I can eat. I can't bite off a sandwich, so my usual breakfast food is out. Then I thought of croissants. I don't have to bite down on one, I can rip off little pieces by hand and eat them that way.
When I started my first croissant (plain), Miranda came sniffing to see what I was eating. I ripped off a little piece and held it out to her. Sure enough, she gobbled it up. She ended up eating half my croissant. I'm starting to think there's nothing this cat won't eat, unless it's labelled 'cat food.' She will have none of that, thankyouverymuch.
And she's so skinny, I will continue giving her anything she will eat.

Shiral - 10 Jan 2006 06:32 GMT Hey, this evening, Nina was convinced my dinner salad was right up her alley. =o) Then I gave her a lettuce leaf to see what she would do, and she ate a LITTLE of it.
But I'm sure she'd never turn down a croissant. None of my cats would. Meals around here consist of me eating with one hand and pushing cats away with my other hand. It's a very "survival of the fittest on the Serengeti Plain" feeling. Too bad for them that I almost never eat croissants unless it's a very special treat.

My cats won't touch anything that isn't labeled CAT FOOD. No shrimp, no chicken, no bread, no cheese, no ham, nothing. I guess I should consider myself lucky. Wait, Chloe goes apesh*t over crab, so I have to retract my previous statement, somewhat. If she smells crabmeat, she will NOT leave me alone. She will literally climb up my pants to get at the crab. She gets more of it than I do!

She doesn't even like the catfood that's made to look like people food. Cat food all the way for her. She doesn't even try to sniff my food. I guess I'm lucky that way.
She doesn't even wake me up in the morning for her food. On weekends, when I 'sleep in' until 7am, I get up, shower, dress, and stroll into the living room to find her sleeping peacefully in front of the big window, waiting patiently for me to get up and fill her bowl. Frankly, it feels weird. I've never had a cat like her before.

My two don't try to roust me out of bed anymore. They've become very considerate. But once I'm on my feet, *any* delay is unacceptable.
Need to pee? There's a bathroom downstairs, you know. The bowls and the cat food are right on the way.
Stop to sift the upstairs litter box? Don't you have your priorities a bit mixed here? We gotta put it *in* before we have to worry about where it's coming *out*.
Take time to get dressed? Pajamas are perfectly acceptable attire for the wait staff. Just pull up your socks and let's *go*. Your two minutes is up.

Last Friday I bought a package of chopped sirloin and a tub of (hadn't seen it before) mashed sweet potatoes. I had them with a hamburger steak that night but ate only about half of both, so I put the plate down for the cats, figuring that the meat would disappear almost instantly and the potatoes would have to be scrapped off later. Millie, my very underweight smallest cat, was the first to arrive - she stays on the top of the back of my chair during meals so she can just jump down to be first in line for any leftovers. She sniffed the meat, ate some of the mashed sweet potatoes, then left. It was only the next few cats that ate the meat and ignored the potatoes. At least she got a few extra calories.

I don't think we have mashed sweet potatoes in the stores here, but she did once eat a little sweet potato that I had roasted in the oven. As I said, she'll eat anything that isn't labelled cat food.

On the other hand, from comments I've seen here and in other groups with international participation, the civilized world seems to be getting access to foods from just about everywhere.
Maybe Millie's underweight problem is that she doesn't want stuff labeled for cats either - after all, her favorite foods are corn on the cob and watermelon.

Get out the doughnuts and he goes nuts!
Ginger-lyn who knows about the difficulty eating sandwiches, too, and you have my sympathy!

Another carbo kitty! Bonnie likes bread, but doesn't like any other hoomin food. I wonder if Miranda will ever decide she likes cat food? All of the pictures I've seen of her show her to be a sleek, healthy looking cat, so it shows you're finding food she'll eat with the homemade-type diet. It must be hard!

The vet checked her over when we went in for the ringworm test, and said she looks good and healthy. She looks good to me too, and she is alert and playful, so hopefully there's no hidden deficiency that will manifest itself later in life. What I'm most worried about is whether she gets enough calcium, but her vitamin pills contain that, and the vet thought it should be enough for her. Those vitamin pills are the only thing explicitly manufactured for cats that she likes. Luckily, she considers them treats. :öP
