In the last two days, two amazing things have happened:

1) DH was able to pet Oscar's belly, and not only did she not attack him
-- she actually purred!  This only happened once or twice; most of the
time, she still goes into tooth and claw mode.  Still, quite impressive!

2) I put my hand in front of Oscar's face for her to look at.  She
reached out gently, with no claw, pulled my hand closer, and gently
held my fingers in her mouth.  Not a bite; just enough for me to know
she had my hand in her mouth, but not at all painful.  I've never had
her do that before.  It definitely felt like an affectionate gesture.

I feel bad that I left her mostly-alone for over a week, and then
again this weekend, but I wonder if it didn't make her appreciate us a
bit more than she used to.

When we went to get our cats after a week in the boarding kennel,
Smokey and the bits were all over us--Nocturne stalked into a separate
kennel and curled up facing the wall, back to us.  She did the same
thing in her carrier, back to the window, snubbing us.

But once we got her home, she was all clings and cries, bunting
incessently, wailing if we weren't BOTH in bed with her, nuzzling,
purr, purr.

(She's all talk in public, I think!)

Oscar very rarely goes public -- just when we take her to the vet.
And when she's at the vet's, the need for comfort trumps any other
desire.  She clings to me like I'm her last hope.

The progress is so heartwarming with a timid or wild cat. Congrats!

Maybe it's true for cats, too, that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Or maybe she is just mellowing as she gets older. Nikki was a very wild
and independent girl when she was young, but she very slowly became a
pretty cuddly and friendly cat. It took years, though.
