Following on his previous success, Boyfie brought another collared dove and
laid it on the doormat for Kitty this morning.
As her highness didn't deign to go outside until this evening to notice it,
poor Boyfie got a few bops round the ear during the day.
When her bladder was finally near to bursting tonight she nipped into the
out and noticed the dove on the way back.  She grabbed it up and brought it
near the fire.  She has a complaint, it's not still warm.  It's still there
uneaten.
Boyfie came to see if she liked it.  BOP. BOP.
That's a no, then.

She's so offended about it, she's actually curled up on the beanbag that she
claimed she would never set a foot upon ;-))) and I must put the poor dove,
lying nearby, in the bin.

Why don't you remove the feathers etc. and cook it up for yourself? Wild
birds are the best!

It's not worth the trouble of plucking and gutting, they are too small with
no meat on to speak of.  Now if it had been a pheasant...

I tried to cook a pheasant once.  I "tried".  It was an utter failure.
I'm not much of a cook to begin with and I treated it like chicken.  That
was one tough old bird.  MLB

Apparently Boyfie's hunting skills have improved.  Either that or
collared doves - or at least the ones that bf catches are exceptionally
dumb - with all due credit to gallant BF's gesture to KFC. <Bows head to BF>

They're not the brightest of birds. :-)

Their Achilles heel is that they are no jump jets, their take-off is slow
and clumsy.  This makes them easy meat for a young agile cat who can jump
into the air.
Once they are up and flying they are quite safe.

I was thinking about your two yesterday, at one point there were 17 collard
doves on the patio. Kitty and Boyfie certainly wouldn't go hungry here.

I'm sure they must be a staple diet for ferals.  There are often upwards of
20 here, they do well because they eat the poultry food, especially the
wheat I put out for my 2 geese, Shylock and Enid.  I had to put a bit of a
stop to it.  I still put out a litre jug of wheat every morning on a tray
for the geese (and the collared doves) but the rest of the wheat I put in
the bottom of a bucket of water.  Crafty, eh?  The geese can still get it
easily, they like to put their heads right under the water anyway and to
find wheat at the bottom is WOW!
It doesn't seem to make any difference how many collared doves my cats
catch, there are still plenty.  They are a very successful species e
(unknown here before the 60's)  and seem to breed all the year round.

I'm surprised really that Baggy has never caught one, he caught a Wood
Pigeon last year but I saw him an managed to get it away from him before he
hurt it.

That's pretty cool!  Kind of like a toy/treat for the geese.
