Marina - 25 Sep 2004 19:54 GMT
I had to take Frank to the emergency vet today. This morning, he was
straining on the litterbox, then a little gas escaped and two small,
hard poops. Oh, I thought, he is constipated. I broke out the paraffin
oil. Took some in a dropper, and had a huge fight with Frank before I
managed to squirt a little in his mouth. He screamed like a banshee and
jerked around so it was hard to get the dropper in his mouth.

Some time later, I noticed he was holding his mouth open. He refused to
eat, and as the day wore on his jaw swelled up. I finally called the vet
school hospital, which is open 24/7, described the situation, and they
told me to bring him in. He got examined under sedation and x-rayed, but
they could find nothing wrong. The vet said the jaw is perfectly mobile,
and not loose at all, like it would be if something was broken.

Well, they sent us home, but Frank is just the same. He holds his mouth
open, and his tongue in between. I was so scared that I had hurt him
while giving him the paraffin oil. At least that did some good, when we
got home he went directly to the litterbox and made an oily deposit, and
then he peed in the other one, so that end should be good. His jaw is
obviously very sore, and it's swollen. If we could please have some
purrs that it heals by itself. The vet is going to ask the radiologist
to take a look at the x-rays on Monday, to make sure nothing's broken.

Frank wants nothing to do with me and I just want to hug him and tell
him everything will be alright. He glares at me and stalks off if I come
near. I'm so sorry if I caused this.

Awww, Marina, I'm so sorry about Frank.  It is awful to think that your baby
might be hurt, and a thousand times worse to think you may have,
inadvertently, done it.

We're sending purrs that everything will be all right and that Frank heals
quickly and completely (and that he forgives you).

Hugs,

Mega purrs for Frank's quick recovery.  Maybe in your understandable hurry
to get medication into him you bruised his jaw in the struggle..  If so,
he'll be okay in a few days.  Try not to worry too much that you caused it,
if you did, it wasn't intentional.  And maybe you didn't, anyway.
I once killed a hen by giving her liquid medication that she needed..  She
struggled and the liquid went straight into her lungs and she died (drowned)
almost immediately.  I felt so bad about that.

So sorry to hear of Frank's trials. Purrs for him to recover soon.
I'd suspect that his sore mouth might well be why you couldn't get him
to accept the dropper in the first place - the only time my Kensey RB
gave me a hard time we later found out that he had a canine-tooth hole
(from a fight with the local tombully) right through his tongue.

Best wishes

You know, I've been thinking, all it probably would have taken is that
dropper hitting a sensative spot on the gum. How is he doing today?

Thanks, Christine (and everybody else - your kindness has me bawling all
over again at the computer). Frank does have some tartar build-up, and I
was going to take him in for dental work in amonth or so, when he'd
recovered from the last TED trip. The vet did look in his mouth, and she
did scrape the worst of the tartar, but they don't have the equipment at
the vet school hospital's emergency unit to do dental work - that's done
in another department, which is only open during the week.

One reason why I don't like going there with my cats. They have all
these separate units, and if you need different things done, you either
have to schedule many appointments, or at best, have to wait for hours
and hours to be admitted to the different units. Of course, it's good
that they have very specialised people in different fields, but I prefer
a TED's where one vet is able to do it all, as long as it doesn't take
huge expertise.

Oh, poor Frank! Maybe he just got bruised - that could swell up and be
sore, too. Even if he did get hurt in the struggle to avoid being given
oil, he needed to have it! He might be mad at you, but I'll bet his tummy
feels a lot better!

Purrs for his jaw to recover quickly.

That is so upsetting but he probably has bruised areas from his
struggles and these should heal quickly.  B & C and FSP purrs on their

Thanks, Joyce. I'm thinking now, since the x-rays didn't show anything
broken, I may have jabbed his jaw and bruised it (every time I
approached his mouth with the dropper, he would suddenly jerk his head
away). I know it was necessary to administer the oil, but if I'd broken
his jaw, I don't think I could ever forgive myself.

Marina, I really don't think you could have broken his jaw.  The force
necessary to do that would be *way* more than you could have (or certainly
would have - even in a struggle) applied.  I think it's more likely that he
has a bad tooth (which may have be aggravated by the struggle to give him
the medicine).  That would account for the swelling.

I know how you feel, especially with him avoiding you, but you *DID NOT*
intentionally hurt him, just the opposite, you were trying to help him!

Hugs,

Try just sitting on the floor. Grant does this over every little thing. He
gets this way if he plows into me when I'm getting up (it's happened several
times - our timing together stinks) or when he's been hurt or feels sick.
What wins him over is if I sit on the floor and just talk to him. It seems
to work well. I think it makes me less "scary".

I did that last night, but he just slunk away. Today he seems a bit
cheerier. I sat down on the floor and held out my hand to him, and he
came up and sniffed it, and I was even allowed to stroke him a little.
He has also eaten a tiiiiny bit of tuna and licked two minuscule dollops
of sour cream off my finger (both with his thyroid meds mixed into them,
so he's at least got a little of them, though only a fraction of his
dose). I think he even drank a little water. I'm afraid I'll have to
dose him with the syringe tonight, and then he'll be mad at me the next
24 hours again. I truly hope his eating and drinking, albeit only a
little, means he is feeling better.

Does he like cream? If he would lick some of that, it would help him poop if
that is still a problem. How does his mouth look? One time I was playing
with Grant with a toy on a stick and he pulled it out of my hand and then
jumped off the couch with it in his mouth. OMG! I thought I had surely
killed him not hanging onto that thing. It jammed straight back into his
mouth since the stick connected with the floor before he did. He ran around
the apartment, frothing at the mouth and sat under the bed with his mouth
open a long time and I couldn't get him to come out. It was terrible, but he
didn't injure himself badly afterall. Still, took a while for him to come
around. I felt awful:(

Oww! Poor Grant. I know exactly how you felt. Frank does keep his mouth
a little open, and sometimes he holds his tongue between his lips, as if
to keep his jaws from closing. But his lower jaw also looks swollen. At
first I thought it must be dislocated, because it is sticking out too
far, but the x-rays didn't show any evidnece of that, so it must just be
the swelling that makes it stick out so far.

I don't know if it's my eternal optimism, but it seems to me that he is
feeling a little better today. He hasn't eaten more than a morsel,
though. He's peed quite a lot today, so I assume he must have been
drinking, which is a relief. If he's not considerably better tomorrow
(Monday), I'm calling his own TED.

Purrs for Frank's swelling and pain to go away soon. I suppose it is
possible to have hurt his jaw when giving the oil. I know I sometimes
hurt Amber's mouth; although it never swelled. I don't suppose he
would let you look inside and see if there is a lesion in the soft
tissue? Nah, I guess not. Poor boy. Maybe he needs some ice cream to
help take the swelling down. ;-)

The vet did look in Frank's mouth, and didn't find anything but some
tartar build-up. It jurt so much that, even though he was sedated, he
growled at her when she touched his jaw and manipulated them to see if
something was loose. Maybe I will try some ice cream. In fact, I could
use some ice cream myself (feeling very sorry both for Frank and myself

Lots of purrs and best wishes and please keep us updated,

Purrs for you and for Frank.  Don't feel bad; you would never hurt your
Frank.

>got home he went directly to the litterbox and made an oily deposit, and then
he peed in the other one, so that end should be good. His jaw is obviously very
sore, and it's swollen. If we could please have some purrs that it heals by
itself. The vet is going to ask the radiologist to take a look at the x-rays on
Monday, to make sure nothing's broken.

Purrs for Mr Frak to be better & forgive you soon.

Aack!  Our strongest emergency purrs for Frank to get sorted out soonest,
even though TED will be involved.

He may have aspirated some of the oil. I doubt that would show up on
xray. Does the vet know about the oil? If I were you I'd call the clinic
and double check. The mouth hanging open is NOT good, and if he has oil
in his lungs this needs to be addressed.

His mouth doesn't exactly hang open, it's just that his lower jaw is
swollen and obviously hurts, so he doesn't want to close his mouth all
the way. Obviously, I told the vet about the oil, since I thought I had
hurt Frank while administering it, and that would be important for the
vet to know in order to diagnose the problem. From Frank's reactions (he
growled even under sedation when the vet touched his jaw), it would seem
obvious that the problem is with the jaw itself.

Well, I'm pretty sure he ate some food yesterday, because he came
walking from their feeding area, licking his mouth, and even licking his
paw a little, like he does after eating. He must have drank some water,
because he made a fair-sized pee. He did seem a little more perky
yesterday, but then I had to give him his thyroid meds by force again,
so he's avoiding me like the plague now. I also squirted some milk (with
low lactose content) into his mouth, thinking that would give some
energy as well as liquid into his system. I've tried mixing canned food
with warm water to whet his appetite, and I think that is what he ate
yesterday, but I can't be sure. I don't want to follow him around,
because he's so suspicious of me now, and I don't think he would eat
anything if I was hovering near.

I will be calling his regular TED today (Monday). Maybe get him in for
another infusion, and maybe some intravenal nourishment.
