Can anyone tell me if females in heat become more aggressive? I'm
taking care of a 1yr old female whose spay status is unknown... She
came to me 2 months ago starving thin and has been gaining weight.
This week she has been *very* vocal, energetic, and playful, but during
the past day she's mildly bitten and scratched me during play, and
bitten a chunk of fur off my spayed female.
Could heat be responsible for how she's acting? Is this typical?
Thanks guys,
Acorn

>From my (limited) experience with unspayed females, I think so. When
Biskit came she went into heat before we got her spayed. She became
*very* "friendly". She would follow me around, roll around on the floor
then jump up and bite me. Unaware that she was living in a house full
of eunichs, she also pestered the other cats night and day. Man. I
don't know how anyone can live with an unspayed female cat. Good luck.

Yes, but IIRC, when they *are* in heat, there's little doubt.
Girlcats in heat are such a colossal PITA that you KNOW that's what's
going on. They may be overly playful, spilling over into roughness
and aggression, but if's she's YELLING all the time, rolling around on
the floor, and incessantly rubbing herself on stuff, including people,
those are the real indicators.

I suppose it varies with the cat, but in my experience, when
a female cat comes in heat, she leaves you in no doubt!
Their behaviour is far from subtle! (In addition to
yowling, they sort of crouch, "pedalling" with their back
feet and presenting their rear somewhat elevated with the
tail held to one side.) I'd never seen a female cat in
heat, but when the allegedly "fixed" female I'd adopted had
her first heat, it didn't take a genius to figure out what
was wrong with her!

Maybe she's just nipping now because she's learned to love you? My Doc
is a biter, but he only started biting when I'd had him about three
weeks. Like the song says,
You only bite the ones you love,
The ones you shouldn't bite at all.
or something like that. :-)
