Hobbes might have diabetes

Hobbes and Selena went in yesterday for annual vacs. We're going to a new
vet office that I really like. The vet asked if any of my cats went outside
or if we foster cats. When I told her no she recommended that we not give
feline leuk and distemper shots this year. I've never had a vet make that
offer.

The last time I had Hobbes at the old vet his blood glucose test was high
(>300) and the vet recommended that we retest in a few months to make sure
it wasn't due to stress.  This was when he was having x-rays and heart
scans. So when I went in yesterday I asked that they run a blood panel on
him.  Dr. Jerry called this morning and said that everything looked good
except his blood glucose which is now >400.  She's requesting the lab do
additional testing to see if this was stress related or something that has
been going on for awhile.  I should know by the middle of next week.  I'm
not feeling very optimistic about this.

I know several of you have diabetic cats. I'll probably be asking for advice
when we know and I find out what the vet recommends.

Happy New Year to all of you.

I don't have any advice, but I have lots of purrs that Hobbes will be OK.

Thanks, Lori, Hobbes can use all the purrs he can get.

Purrs for Hobbes. That is very high indeed. I've been testing Pearl.
When I don't mess it up. Her poor ears :(  It seem like whether it's
four hours after a meal or an hour and a half, her readings are always
between 280 and 300 or so. Too high, but not astronomcial. I'm sure we
are going to have to go on insulin, but I am scared of it :(   So, I'm
right there with you.

Hugs and purrs for both Julie and Karen. Ladies, did your vets test
the urine for sugar? Did they do a Fructosomine test? These two tests
are not really affected by vet stress.

Never forget that a cat is an obligate carnivore; and diabetes and the
treatment work a bit differently than in an omnivore. For instance,
human diabetics eat very little fats. Cats can eat it ok; but not a
whole lot. Just don't worry about the fat content unless something has
enough fat to make you gag! As for insulin, humans get the shot in the
muscle; cats get it just under the skin in the scruff. Cats don't
absorb it well when it goes into the muscle.

Diabetic Management canned food by purina (obtained only at the vet)
is recommended. They also make a dry food; but it is high in calories
and should be given only by the tablespoon. But many slaves feed their
diabetic cats on Fancy Feast or some such.

I used to until the dollar crunch. Now I feed Walmart's Special Kitty.
Read the Ingredients! There must be no food starch or carbohydrates.
That lets out all the sliced varieties as well as a few other flavors.

Vet stress is a real thing. You can bet that the number the vet gets
is at least 50 points higher than you would get doing the test at
home. The blood test is done in the ear lobe. Be sure to hold a cotton
ball to the site with pressure for a minute. That lessens the chance
of thickening scar tissue.

I recommend going to the Feline Diabetes web site and educate
yourself. It has been a big help to me. Sheba and I have everything
down to a routine. She even jumps up on her pedastel for her shot! Let
me know if I can help with tips or more info.

Hugs and purrs, CATherine and Sheba

Purrs that Hobbes' problem is minor.

I am saddened by Hobbes' potential dx.  However, if it is diabetes it is
very very treatable.  Cats can live many years.  Just this week one person
reported that he has been treating his kitty for ten years.

If he is diabetic I suggest going to the Feline Diabetes Message Board
(FDMB,
http://www.felinediabetes.com/phorum5/list.php?8 for help and support.

I don't have a diabetic cat, but have had type I diabetes for nearly 36
years myself, so am sending purrs of sympathy. Do you think you could do
a blood test on Hobbes at home? Maybe the vet has one of those small
glucose meters for home use that you could borrow? Wish I could send you
mine, but I need it every day. :o/ Stress certainly does strange thing
to the BG, so a home test might be more reliable.

Hi Julie (and R),

So sorry to hear that Hobbes might be ill.  Our old cat Ted lived with
diabetes for about 6 or 7 years and, in the end, it was cancer rather
than diabetes that meant we had to have her PTS.  Diabetes is a
nuisance, for Ted it meant a controlled diet and 2 x daily insulin
injections, but it was fine and we learned to live with it fairly
easily.  The biggest thing for us was getting into a routine and,
before too long, Ted would let us know *exactly* when her dinner time
was!  She had no problems with the insulin injections - she associated
them with being fed and they obviously didn't cause her any pain.

We managed her diabetes without much more than careful observation and
annual blood panel checks.  Other cats have more volatile blood
glucose levels and need more careful monitoring.  As with people,
diet, excercise and keep stress levels down are important.

Cheers,
Tish

Purrs for Hobbes that you find it easy to control. That's my big fear
with my chubby former feral Bonnie, because I doubt I could ever
medicate her regularly.

Lots and lots of purrs for it to be something easily treatable.

When we got Jasper's diagnosis, it filled us with dread.  Nearly
eighteen months later, it's no biggie.  Sure, some things have changed.
We can't leave plates out for a second now if he's in the house.  We
have to write a few minutes extra into morning and afternoon routines to
feed and jab him. But he's still the same - he likes Out, he likes
chasing things, he likes the odd cuddle with a hoomin, and the vet is
very pleased with him generally.

Purrs that you get the best outcome for Hobbes,

Does Hobbes eat dry or canned?

My vet claims to have gotten several cats off of insulin by switching
them to an entirely wet diet (fewer carbs) from dry.  She strongly
believes that kibble is a major culprit in feline diabetes.

Ask away, Im no expert but Otis is now 16 and has been diagnosed
diabetic for about 3 years now, and is doing great, he lost weight and
regained his youth, he's like a different cat.

I don't have any advice, but purrs on the way that Hobbes will be just
fine.  The only thing I know about diabetic cats is that some *can* be
managed by diet and/or pills alone.  Hope that if this is what Hobbes
has, it will be easy to manage.
