Rob Poe - 30 Dec 2005 08:46 GMT Howdy! We've had Tyler (or is that the other way 'round) our cat Tyler for about 1.3 years now. He was 6 months old(ish) when we got him from an adoption agency that rescues cats from kill shelters (or wherever!).
He's white, with brown/black markings on his head, parts of his ears, one on his side and on his rump, extending down his tail. He's a nice cat, if a little rambunctious .. he likes his rough kitty play (but he knows when not to!).
He started throwing up anything he ate/drank yesterday (Wed) and continued up through Thurs. Took him to the vet, and they did an exam. They said that they needed to do blood/xray and we went home to wait (they were busy).
They called and said they needed to keep him overnight. His blood levels look good, stomach and bowels look ok, but his small intestine (part of it) is inflamed, and they dont know why. She said it doesn't look like a blockage on the XRay. Wanted to keep him to give him IV fluid to rehydrate and observe overnight.
Said if he wasn't ok tomorrow they'd want to go in and have a looksee (exploratory surgery).
I'm a worrier, so I'm sitting here, catless, and I keep wondering how he's doing .. what he's doing .. if he's lonely, or sitting there with his little "meeeew" (he doesn't meow, it's meeeew in a high pitch).
Maybe that sounds stupid. Maybe not.
I came home and gave his litterbox a good disinfecting, as well with his food/water bowls.
Guess I'm going to bed now..But who will cuddle :/

> Maybe that sounds stupid. Maybe not. Not!! :) I would be worrying myself sick if one of my kitties had symptoms like that with an unknown cause - and so would just about any of us on this newsgroup. Nobody thinks this is stupid!
I hope Tyler's OK! He's a young guy, so chances are, he will be. I'll have my 3 send out some purrs in his direction.
I know it's lonely when your companion isn't around, whether that's a human or cat companion...
Welcome to RPCA!

Rob Poe - 30 Dec 2005 09:04 GMT Thank you! I keep looking for him to be underfoot as always (or sleeping on one of the beds here). When I came home, I said "Hello Kitt...err.." (I greet the cat when I get home).
He's sometimes the emotionally detached kitty, but sometimes just lovable, too (rubs all over you). And he always likes strangers .. Not loves, but likes :)

A friend has a warehouse that people dump cats at (why do they pick somewhere to dump). A pregnant female had her litter there .. the cats have been neutered (spayed) and their first round of shots. And the price is right!!! (free)
The lil' girl we're looking at getting is all black (from what I understand).

Steve Touchstone - 30 Dec 2005 11:16 GMT Welcome Rob. Pretty much everyone here would be worried sick if one of our furbabies had unexplained symptoms - especially if they might reuire exploratory surgery to figure out the problem. So, no I don't think you stupid. Purrs on the way that your Tyler avoids surgery and that he'll be back t normal in time to welcome the new addition to your fur family.
he certainly looks to be a handsome fellow - sort of reminds me of my Rocky (RB) or Spot, both black and white spotted kitties

Trust me, she does. But she's an adorable sweet girl and loves me.
I sure hope this turns out to be nothing with Tyler. And I completely understand about the "who will cuddle"... my cat Persia is a cuddler. I miss her on the rare occasions she decides to be aloof or waits to join me when I sleep. She's my furry purring heating pad :)

(I have a Tyler cat too, and going by your description of your Tyler they might almost be twins in looks and behaviour. Is your Tyler long haired by any chance?)

He was 6 months old(ish) when we got him from [quoted text clipped - 29 lines] > > Guess I'm going to bed now..But who will cuddle :/ Rob Poe - 30 Dec 2005 23:06 GMT Called the vet at 9AM this AM. She said he was really mad at being there, hated everyone there, was hissing and spitting and growling and hiding behind the litter box in his cage. Now I know not to ever board him! (lol). She said because he wouldn't eat / drink / use the litterbox, she didn't know if he was any better .. so sent me home with some bland food (well, i bought them .. nothing at the vet is free, I dont think). $238 total bill (X-Ray, blood work, standard visit fee, 1 night boarding fee, prescription, food, IV fluids).
She said "Take him home and put him into an enclosed room, so you can monitor if he throws up again. Give him 2 antacids a day (the prescription I mentioned before), one in AM one in PM. If he throws up again, take him to the emergency vet." $300 ... just to walk in the door? Hmmm...
They brought him out and at first he wouldn't acknowledge me. But after about 2 minutes, he was rubbing his face all over my fingers (brave me stuck his fingers into the carrier).
He mewed a couple times on the drive home, I kept a finger in the carrier front, which he kept rubbing his head on. The purr machine came on when we walked in the door, but when he realized his litterbox and food/water were in the office he wasn't so happy as he knew he was going to be locked in there all day while I worked.
I put some of the bland food (it actually smells kind of good, but im not going to try it!) and watched him eat some. He took a little drink. Then he laid on the floor, and it looked for a second like he was going to barf (kept licking his chops). Then he started grooming himself.
I reached down and gave him a few strokes. He looked at me, I heard a little Pffft, then I smelled the most foul thing. An SBD!!! Oh noes. Nothing worse than an "empty intestine cat fart". (sorry, I'll refrain from further grossness)
He drank a little, then ate some more. Watched him for about 20 minutes more, then went to work. Worried all day that I'd come home to an office wall painted with puke (whoops, broke my vow. Won't do it again). Got home, and opened the office and found ......
The cat. Very happy to see me. Most of the food is eaten. He's drank some, too. Also used the litterbox (but not for #2 yet). No barf.
Sweet mother of kitty goodness!
I think he's ok now. He's still banned to the office for now (sorry, kitty, gotta do a huge cleaning .. an 11 year old who doesn't know how to pick up after himself (got that from his mother, im trying to reverse that) and stuff ends up everywhere. Gotta clean it all up before you can go exploring again). No want kitty to get all sick and yucky again.
I made a deal with him today. "Kitty, if you don't barf I'll not take you back to the vet today."
Maybe he listened.
Doubt it.
:)

Hope he stays better! Joyce
Rob Poe - 31 Dec 2005 02:00 GMT He ate the bland food earlier. He's actually had a bowel movement (which is GOOD!!) but now he is telling me he's hungry .. but won't touch the bland food ..
sigh

He's a white cat, so you can see his skin underneath. The pink around his eyes is turning a little reddish, and he seems to be getting redder all over.
Could this be a hypersensitivity from staying the night @ the Vet, or is it something I need to be more concerned about???

The pink [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > Could this be a hypersensitivity from staying the night @ the Vet, or > is it something I need to be more concerned about??? I'd go more on how he acts than on the nose color (unless his nose gets yellowy!!!) The antacids may help a lot. One of my girls gets upset sometimes and it helps her. It may be a bit of IBD but they would need a biopsy to be sure. You may think about checking in to that though.
Rob Poe - 31 Dec 2005 05:34 GMT He seems really tired right now. Not lethargic (like he was when he was dehydrated) but tired.
I'm not sure if he's drank much since I brought him home ... but he hasn't thrown anything up.
He's turning his nose at the bland food -- made him a scrambled egg, which he chewed on but didn't eat.
Reason for concern, or do I just need to get out of his face for a while and let him heal on his own?
I just read what I typed, let me know if you think that's what I need to do. Maybe it is.

If he is not eating then a vet trip even an emergency one would be in order as not eating is much worse then him throwing up. If he is eating keep an eye on him, and if he seems worse take him in ASAP. I think you said you have a vet appt on Monday or s oif he is eating and otherwise appears ok he can wait to be checked until then.

Rob Poe - 31 Dec 2005 20:16 GMT He'll eat his normal DRY food .. but will not touch the bland stuff ..
I'm giving him one or two pieces at a time to see how he handles it.
>> He seems really tired right now. Not lethargic (like he was when he >> was dehydrated) but tired. [quoted text clipped - 34 lines] > Monday or s oif he is eating and otherwise appears ok he can wait to be > checked until then. Rob Poe - 31 Dec 2005 22:22 GMT Ok. He'll eat little pieces of his normal dry food. he looks at me when Im in the kitchen and "asks" for his normal food. He's keeping little pieces down, so I'm considering giving him a little more of his regular food to see if he'll hold it too.
He seems to want to eat / drink and he's using the litterbox. So I guess I'll go off of Defcon 1 and go to Defcon 3 .. close watchful eye.
He's sleeping a little more than usual, maybe (hard to tell with a cat, really) but when he's awake he's very playful. So I think he'll be ok.
I'm still being neurotic.

Don't worry about worrying. We're all bats for cats, and some of us have gone out of our minds over smaller matters. When we first got our Odessa, a former feral, she ran out of the room where we were sequestering her until she was integrated, and got into a little cubbyhole atop the basement wall, which is all cement but doesn't go completely up to the ceiling. I went nuts, got over here and asked for frantic feline purrs. We thought she'd gotten into one of the walls elsewhere in the house, and that we'd have to strip down the plaster to get her out! All the while the little princess was sitting pretty, making fun of me and my husband.
You're doing right by Tyler by getting him good care and nipping his problem in the bud early. He has youth and strength, and a caring catslave, on his side. Purrs for the both of you, for his health and your nerves. Trust me, we've all been there!

Marina - 02 Jan 2006 05:42 GMT > Guess I'm going to bed now..But who will cuddle :/ Welcome to the group. That is a familiar question around here after I had to have my longtime bed buddy Frank PTS in December. The kittens don't cuddle the way he did. Frank would always join me in bed, whether it was to sleep at night or for a catnap during the day. He would curl up around my head or on the pillow next to mine and purr me to sleep. The kittens usually wait until I'm asleep. Caliban sometimes comes up for a cuddle in the morning.
