Dusty came to me five years ago (the day after hurricane Floyd passed
by). We bonded immediately as I scooped the tiny six-week old furball
into one hand - and pulled her close to my chest. As a kitten and all
through her adoledcence(?) she was always at my side. Even today she
still very rarely lets me lets me out of her sight when I am home ...
in teh kitchen .. the bathroom ... the bedroom ... on the couch in the
living room. Dusty is there.
If I give a little too much attention to one of the boys, she is there,
scolding them (sometimes scolding me too). I've had several surgical
procedures in the last few years, and every time, the second that I get
into the house and on the couch, Dusty was there, keeping the other
cats and - even humans - away from me.
When we go to bed, she'll jump up and lay by my face, until she is sure
I am down for the night. Then, she gets up, and usually makes two
circuits through the house, patrolling,  checking things out, then jumps
back up with me and goes to sleep. And GOD FORBID if one of the boys
gets up and wanders around as WE are trying to get to sleep - she will
jump down, chase them back to their bed, then jump back up with me, and
re-settle in with a VERY heavy sigh (it's actually kind of funny).
In the morning, all she has to hear is the sound of me turning the
computer monitors off - followed by the jingling of the cars keys, and
she will go and sit by the front door, and literally stand in fron of
me - I don't know if she is trying to keep me from leaving or what -
but sometimes she gets, uhhhh .... PISSED as I go out - sometimes when
I close the door behind me, as I turn the key in the lock, I can hear
her hissing and growling and SMACKING the boys .... heh heh heh heh ...
When I got home from a ten-day vacation last year, she, for the first
two hours, would have NOTHING to do with me, she would 'dip' out of the
way when I'd try to pet her and just GLARE at me. I think she was a
little 'diappointed' that I left her for so long.
I've have NEVER had a cat like her, never felt so 'watched over'.
Any other 'bodygaurds' out there?

Best regards,
John R.

Our theme song around here is "You'll Never Go to the Bathroom
Alone." ;)

Or even "You'll Never Wee Alone"?

I'm afraid (glad?) that none of my boys past or present has ever been
that consistently protective of me, only in short bursts of a few days
at the most, but have the feeling that little Snowball just might grow
into the role eventually.

Two of them. Amelia and Samuel.

Nancy and I adopted Amelia from one of the pet adoption days at the
local Petsmart store, about four years ago. She was a tiny little girl,
the only tortie up for adoption that day, and in a cage all by herself
looking lonely and depressed. Nancy picked her out immediately (I
couldn't even go to look at the kitties, knowing that I'd be heartbroken
seeing all the homeless kitties). She settled into house-kitty life
immediately, and she loves Nancy as much as she does me, but she picked
me as HER human pretty early on. Today when I come in the front door,
she'll be waiting on the bookcase by the door and will climb onto my
shoulder as I come by. When the back door is open and the kitties are
outside enjoying the fresh air, Amelia will come in and meow at me to
get me come sit outside with them. And when she's in the house, she'll
follow me from room to room. She always tries to be close to me when I'm
at home.

I rescued Samuel about a year and half ago, when some jerk abandoned him
by the side of the road. He had been living on his own for about a week
before I was able to trap him. I figured he would be a little wild still
when I brought him home from the vet that first time, but as soon as I
opened up his carrier the very first thing he did was climb up in my lap
and lean his tiny body against me. He still sleeps on top of me every
night that I'm at home, and keeps a careful eye on me during the day.

Awwww he was soo relieved to be safe. As some of you know from Tak & Charleen's
visit Spicey is a guard cat, she's big and fierce 6-8lbs.

Is she really that big?  She's such a small, lanky kitten-cat, I
thought she must be 6-7 lbs.  Actually, that's not very far from your
estimate.  It's like Spicey has several different modes of operation.
Play, guard, and off. :)

My Frodo kitty (RB) was my soulmate kitty of all time -- I was lucky to
share his life for 20 years and he was always there for me; in 1987 I had
weird medical issues  for most of the year and Frodo, at times, knew just
how to be with me when I was feeling so very low.  I particularly remember
an episode when I was having some bad withdrawal from prednisone and he
stuck to me like glue; at the time I'd felt quite alone because I couldn't
get relief from how ill I felt, the doctors were not very sympathetic and DH
tried to understand but just didn't know what to do -- Frodo was my shining
little bit of warmth at my side during those days; I'll never forget it or
him.

Nocturne is a "tender."  When Daddy had pneumonia, Nocturne stayed up
with him, licking his cheek, bunting if his breathing became irregular
in his sleep.  When Mommy had ulcers, Nocturne curled around her head
to comfort her and watched over her while she slept.  When the kittens
came along, Nocturne spent a month in virulent hate before accepting
the kittens as her acolytes and grooming them within an inch of their
lives (and she STILL GROOMS THEM a year later).  Nocturne knows when
mommy is depressed and forces herself to be a lap kitty at those
times.  whenever we are ill, she tends us.

The rest of the time, Nocturne is a dictatorial little tyrant who
holds the entire human race in contempt.

"Diseased servants cannot serve me properly"....or could she really
love us? :)
