He just came in with his tail all bent and hanging at an odd angle, and
can't stand for me to touch it. What next? And meowmie with less than $50 to
last the rest of the month!

Pat, can you make a deal with your vet to pay in installments?  If so I can
help you out by calling in a credit card payment if you'll post your vet's
contact info - it can't be much 'cause I'm pretty broke myself, but maybe
others here could help out also.  I just can't stand to think of Abelard in
pain!

I could send a little bit too.  Wouldn't be a lot, maybe $10 as I'm still
quite poor, but every little helps.  Take him and get him seen to at the
vets.  Somehow the money will come.

Oh no, the poor guy!

We're pretty broke to, but we could chip in $25 or so.

I'm sorry but I can't contribute any funds.  I just sent a donation for a
friends mom to the hospice her mother was in; she lost her mom just over a
week ago.  I'm pretty much broke.  Purrs for Abelard on the way.

I think after receiving payments on his behalf from far and away, before, if
I go to the same vet, they will accept such an arrangement.

I can't stand to see him in pain, either, but having struggled to scrape
together enough to get my house (closing in less than two weeks now, and I
am still far short of the mark) and with almost all of next month's income
delegated to the house, too, the well is dry here.

For tonight if I can get the tail washed clean I will apply arnica gel +
DMSO (my standard pain/trauma emergency treatment).

The vet info:

Whetstone Veterinary Clinic
9493 Hwy. N
Mountain Grove MO  65711
417-926-6277

They open around 8 AM Central Time (GMT -6:00) - if you call early tell them
Abelard probably hasn't been seen yet but will be there later on. I have
horse chores to handle before I leave in the morning, probably wont be able
to get out before noon and it's a 40-minute drive.

Thanks so much.

Central time - that's 2 hours ahead of Pacific, right? What time do
they close? I just called (it's just after 5PM here, so I guess it's
7PM there) and got their answering machine, so they must close by 7.
Guess I'll try tomorrow.

They close at 5 PM. You're right, it's just after 7 here now.

Thanks for being willing to help with the cost of his care.

Yes, me too.

Who is managing the catslaves fund atm?

It would be much easier for me to Paypal some across rather than calling
overseas, but I am willing to help however I can.

I'm not sure there is a catslaves fund any longer, or if there is, what the
PP address for it is. My PP address is pdavis (at) fidmail (dot) com, but I
don't have the PP debit card yet so it won't be of much use at the vet's
where they don't take PayPal!
jXwXeXrXmXoXnXt@sonic.net - 23 Dec 2005 01:10 GMT
> Who is managing the catslaves fund atm?

Unfortunately, there is no catslaves fund anymore. I found this out
when Smudge was attacked by dogs, resulting in a very high vet bill.
Folks are just pitching in where they can. But I think there are some
people on this ng who have their own paypal accounts which could be
used, I think.

Seems most of us with beloved cats have problems with funds these days.  But
we send purrs!

And the purrs are extremely valuable. Abelard has eaten supper and is now
sleeping (not sure how soundly) in his little bed. I hate to disturb him to
do anything just yet.

I told him when he first came in "This is it, you're an indoor cat from now
on, I can't handle seeing you hurt."

Yes, I am willing to PAYPAL a little bit also for Abelard instead of using
my credit card.

Pat, you can count me in too.  Having just spent roughly $1500 on
Speckles the past few weeks, I'm a little more short than usual in the
vet budget but can sure find *some* to help Abelard, poor little guy.
Let us know how.

Oh, Jeanne... I doubt I've spent $1500 at the vet in the last 20 years! How
you manage that kind of expense and still offer to help another cat is
beyond my comprehension, but if you want to do it, we are most grateful, and
vet info is:

My vet lets me do time payments.  He knows I will pay him.  Meanwhile, wrap
his tail in a stretch bandage or a strip of cotton gauze so it will 'set'
correctly until you can get him to the vet, which I would still do ASAP.

He won't even let me touch it, let alone wrap it, but I'll give it a shot.
First I better wash it and apply external pain relief.

Hey Pat, I came in a little late on this but I can help out a bit too.
Poor hurting baby....

The folks at the clinic are going to be inundated with calls from
everywhere in the morning!

Well if the folks here don't mind, any excess funding could be used to help
poor sweet Baby Eyes, who I fear is most likely asthmatic. There was a
thread here a month or so ago from a new person about a coughing cat, and
someone posted a link to a video clip of how an asthmatic cat looks during
an attack, and a vet's written description also. I'm sorry to say that is
precisely what Baby Eyes has been doing. I always thought it must be
hookworms, but after several wormings which did not resolve the problem, I
have to assume the cause is something worse. She was doing it again a few
days ago.... So far she has not had a really severe episode but it could
come at any time. I had looked up the price of the mask for the inhaler, and
the sprays, etc. and knew it was out of my reach, so I never mentioned it.

I just called in and they said you had not made an appointment for Abelard
yet.  I told them you probably would be, but it not to just put the payment
towards your future account for any of the kitties.  I'm just sorry it
couldn't have been more.

How is Abelard this morning?

P-o'd at being locked in.

I just woke up. Couldn't sleep until past 4 AM.

Wen I made the appointment (just now) the receptionist told me so far only
one call has come in.

That happened to Sheba many years ago. Only it was just dislocated. A
retired vet friend showed me how to gently straighten and then massage
the tail with gentle pulling motions. It healed with just a bit of a
kink. I hope that is all that is wrong with Abelard. Although the way
he doesn't want you to touch it makes it sound like something worse.
Could you get someone to help hold him while you at least splint it?
Healing purrs on the way.

Many thanks for the purrs.

Unfortunately there's no one around who could help hold him. Gloria is in
Arkansas until after New Year's. I sure hope it's only dislocated. It is
quite swollen now near the bent spot. I do not feel confident or competent
to handle this one and will be glad to let the vet take care of it.

I'll get him in as early as I can in the morning. Meanwhile I am going to
take a bath and try to dip his tail into the water and rinse it off as well
as possible, then apply the arnica and DMSO, and make sure he stays indoors
for the night.
polonca12000 - 23 Dec 2005 10:32 GMT
I'm so very sorry to hear that.
Lots and lots of healing purrs and best wishes that the vet can fix
whatever is wrong with Abelard's tail,

Shoots, I was working all day yesterday and I missed this thread.  Is there
anything the vet can do for a broken tail?  I'd think they'd have to
amputate, unfortunately.  I wish I could contribute, but I can't even afford
to get my husband a Christmas gift this year.

Please, no mention of the A word... and not to worry on the $ I think the
vet bill is gonna be more than covered.

Pat, were you able to get Abelard to the vet?  What's the diagnosis?  How is
he?  What did they do for his tail?
