Abelard chose the meatless option

Opened a can of the kitties' favortie gooshy food as I was finishing my own
lunch preparations, so we could all eat together. But when Abelard saw my
veggie-burger, he would not touch the meaty stuff in his own dish, and
started begging me to share my lunch. He hoovered up half a meatless burger
along with some green leaf lettuce, while the others enjoyed the extra
portion of catfood he left behind.

He's such a character.  How's he like his bed?

He's been sleeping in it every night since the first time he used it. When
he's not in it (daytime) I often find Tommy or Eli in it. Just got another
bed for them, see my latest post. I'm hoping one of the girls claims it.

lol! Abelard sounds like Barnabus. Barnabus is a carb junkie. He totally
ignores any meat I might be eating for the bread.  I think his favorite
is pizza crust.

My girls like rice milk, which is rich in carbs. I don't keep cow milk in
the house because I don't use it, but I occasionally find "cat milk" cartons
at the discount grocery and they love that. And once in a while I'll get
some powdered goat milk for them. That's their favorite of all the milks.

For some reason, your post gave me the image of someone trying to milk a
cat. ;o)

I've never tried a veggie burger, do they taste anything like a real burger?

Vegetarians think they do, but trust me: not even close!

LOL, actually, I like tofu. When it's not pretending to be meat,
that is. :)

I love a grilled tofu sandwich on a wheat bun with tomatoes and onions and
sprouts.  Now I've got to head to the health food store lunch counter
tomorrow.

I bought a box of those frozen 'Garden Burgers' once.  No way did it taste
like a burger and I was really shocked when I read the ingredients list.
Surely all the crap they put in them to make them taste like meat are much
worse for you than actually eating a hamburger.

I sometimes fry up a boca burger:

Does it taste or feel exactly like a real burger?  Nah.  But I
actually like them pretty well.

This was a first for me, too. Grabbed them because they were in the
Clearance bin at the market, just for kicks. They were pretty good the way I
fixed them - with fried mushrooms, red onion, and string beans on the side,
and Asian BBQ sauce.

But as far as the comparison with beef, I can't really say, because I
haven't had ground beef since 1969 and do not remember the taste, which I
never did enjoy and only ate because it was one of the few items my mom
served at home and I woulda starved otherwise.

Depends on what's in it, there's so many different types, what with the
ones that are filled with vegetables, to the gross, greasy, meat
substitute ones (still taste better than a McShite burger though.  My
favourite veggie burgers are home made, made with lentils, egg, flour
and seasoning, nothing like meat just so happen to be burger shaped.

Certainly not, at least not if they're any good.

As a long-time vegetarian, I can't understand why in heck people assume
I'd want to eat something that tastes like meat.

Some vegetarians do.  Some don't.

Some people who aren't vegetarians are still trying to eat less meat,
and they don't mind things tasting like meat.

Personally, I usually find that the best veggie dishes are those that
aren't trying to be a meat-based dish.  Just as the best low-fat
dishes are original creations, not foods that were meant to be fatty.

He he, my sentiments exactly.  I'm lucky cos most of my friends are
veggie, or I'd never go to BBQ's, there's something really gross about
the smell of flesh burning isn't there?

Who knew there was such a thing as a veggie cat?  <G>

Not that I personally agree with it, but there ARE plenty of vegetarian
cats.

Cats are obligate carnivores, they need taurine which is only found in meat.
Without it they would be very unhealthy, first they'd go blind, then have a
much shorter life than they otherwise would.

I know, I wouldn't make Otis go veggie, but I think you can get veggie
cat food that has synthetic taurine in it, but I could, of course, be
wrong as I've never even looked into it as I think it's a crazy idea.
It's OK for dogs, as they're basically scavengers though, but I still
wouldn't do it, same as I wouldn't make them go Kosher (that's a point,
I wonder if you can even get Kosher pet food?)
mlabofski@yahoo.co.uk - 22 Dec 2005 17:51 GMT
I just googled vegetarian cat food, and you can get it (and vegan) with
vegetarian source Taurine.  I'm still not doing it though!  It's my
choice to be a veggie, not Otis's - when he tells me he wants to go
veggie, fine - ha ha.

??  If Abelard ate half of your lunch, weren't you entitled to a
share of his?  :-P

Well, it was really just 1/4 of my lunch, cuz I made two burgers.

There really is no telling what a cat will decide is good or bad, is
there? I frequently bring home a chef salad from work. Whem I get home
the first thing I do is put out some kitty food, but Sammy and Spot
always have to check out the salad before starting on their food.
Sammy always begs for a piece of ham from the salad, so I usually give
her a piece. LB thinks any hoomin food is suspect, but will consent to
eating a small piece of ham - assuming the hoomin cuts it into a small
piece and holds it for her. Spotty isn't interested in ham at all -
unless it has some frence dressing on it. If there's some dressing on
it she'll lick it, but the only time she actually eats the ham is if
Sammy comes and tries to steal it.
