Poor neglected Sammy

For the past hour or so I've been sitting here glued to the 'puter.
Starting a half hour ago Sammy has been trying everything to get my
attention. Hopping up in front of the monitor got her a few scritches,
but obviously wasn't what she was after. She jumped down and started
grabbing my arm as I typed. Since I have on a long sleeved shirt that
didn't get the reaction it normally does. It wasn't until I got up a
minute ago to go grab something to drink that it finally got through
my thick hoomin skull what it was she wanted. There were three bottle
caps lying at my feet - she wanted get in a game of fetch before
Spotty woke up to spoil it.

You see Sammy loves to play fetch, in fact it's her all time favorite
game. Sammy isn't in for the long 30 minute games she played as a
kitten, but will happily play for 5 minutes or so, purring the whole
time as she runs after the cap and trots back with it. Spotty doesn't
see the point, in fact the only time Spot will chase a bottle cap is
if I throw it onto the linoleum in the bathroom or kitchen, and then
she turns it into a hockey game rather than fetch. Normally as soon as
Sammy and I start a game of fetch, Spotty starts watching Sam run
after the caps. After a couple tosses, Spotty ambushes Sammy as she's
trotting back, and the game of fetch turns into a a wrestling match.

This time I carefully avoided the throwing the cap where it would make
noise and wake Spot, so Sammy and I got to play until she wore herself
out. Now thatI'm back to the 'puter Sammy has gone to take a nap on
the pile of laundry I was supposed to wash today, but never got around
to doing.

Aw, so glad Sammy got her playtime with Daddy. We have a similar
situation here, where Miranda hardly ever gets to play her favourite
game of chasing a string because Caliban alwqays muscles in on the
action, and then Miranda mostly just sits back and watches. Only if I
throw the string will Miranda usually get to it before Caliban does, and
then she gets to drag it around, which is her favourite thing to do. Of
course, Caliban usually trails after her and the string, trying to take
it away from her.

That's very interesting, because that's how Heidi wants to play
with string too.  When we first got the two of them, I would
toss a string for Heidi and she would grab it and head off for
the next room -- and Will would chase the trailing end of the
string.

We hoomins loved to see that, but Heidi didn't like it.  Having
Will chase her made her nervous and she would abandon the
string.  Will, bless his heart, instead of taking advantage of
her nervousness to tease her, trained himself not give in to the
temptation of that trailing end.  He is such a complete
gentlecat.  Now Heidi gets to drag the string around without
interference.

I always make sure to have a second string handy, and after
taking a moment to admire Will's self-control as he stares at
that trailing end but doesn't chase it, I pull out the second
string and reward him with some string play of his own.

What a gentleman Will is! I'm afraid there is nothing of the gentleman
about Caliban. He's a street urchin, and proud of it.

In defense of Caliban and all hoolikittens, and with the obvious
difference between intemperate youth and indolent middle age
well in mind, let me quote William Blake:

"Those who restrain their desires, do so because theirs is weak
enough to be restrained."

In that respect, one would have to admit that Will has an
advantage.  (It's hard for me to envision Will as a
hoolikitten.)

Hi Steve! Awww. That's cute that Sammy was trying to tell you she
wanted to play.
Have you always had Spot? . I remember Rocky, Sammy and Little Bit, but
not a Spot.

Spotty is a new addition. She joined us pretty much like Little Bit.
She started coming around to eat at the outside foodbowl earlier this
year as a skinny pregnant youngster. I'm pretty sure she had a
so-called family somewhere, since she was friendly and not all that
skittish. She also had an abcessed wound on one leg, which I had TED
check out.

She had her litter somewhere across the street to the north of me. She
still came once a day to eat, but I didn't see much of her for a
while. Once they were big enough she decided to move them closer to
the food, so she brought them to my patio. Unfortunately, a
thunderstorm hit that night, so I was outside in pouring rain rounding
up wet, VERY scared and skittish kittens to bring them inside where it
was dry. (LB and Sammy HATED her and her kits at first, and LB still
can just barely tolerate her). Of course the plan was to just let them
ride out the storm, which changed to finding the owners, which of
course evolved to finding new homes, etc etc. Well I found homes for
the kittens (Dr Haney kept two himself, and had a client who had just
lost her long-time companion and was in the market for a kitten.) One
of the guys at work had always had cats, but was currently living in a
"No Pet" apartment. He had already decided to move and get a cat
before he heard about Spotty and her babies, and he ended up taking
the ony girl baby to live at his sister's until he moved. He doesn't
work with me anymore, but last I heard he had moved and Cali was
training him to be a proper cat slave.

Anyway, to make a long story shorter, no one wanted Spotty (and the
truth is after the first week or so I didn't try very hard). Once Dr
Haney gave her a clean bill of health and she'd been spayed and
chipped she moved in with us. She's a real sweet cat, probably just
over a year old and still pretty much a kitten herself. So far she has
absoultely no interest in going back to the OUT, she'll stand in an
open door and look, but that's about it.
