Well, dumb me, I guess!
The other day, a friend took me to Petco and Target to get mostly cat
food, litter and holiday toys. I got four cans of cat food and a
couple of toys in a small bag and left them in my friend's car. I
didn't realize it until later, and by that time, it was so cold, the
food probably froze.
So *does* canned cat food freeze? And if it does, is it bad?
I hate to throw out four cans of expensive Hill's food!
Thanks to anyone who knows the answers.

I would guess that yes, it probably froze, but becauce it was canned and
therefore vacuum sealed, it would probably be OK. IMHO, I'd thaw it,
make sure it DIDN'T refreeze, and use it up ASAP.

And if the cans have flip-top lids, make sure the pressure didn't cause them
to buckle so that when they thaw the seal is broken. If this happens,
definitely store them in the fridge and use them up pronto.

Of course, if the weather is cold enough!

Why would you think that? People often freeze food when
they want to preserve it - why should cat food be any
different? Freezing might make the cans bulge a little
(which is ordinarily a sign the food inside is spoiled) but
you know the reason, so there's no cause for alarm.

Ginger-lyn, press the tops of the cans before you use them and make
sure they didn't lose their seal. The only thing I can think of is
that if the contents froze & expanded, it could cause the seal to be
lost. If they're still sealed, I would think they're fine.
Plus, if you're still worried, you can always keep them in the fridge.
Even if the seal was compromised, you'll probably be able to use four
cans before they go bad.
Sometimes my cats sniff their favorite food & walk away. Makes me
wonder if the *cats* know that it's bad, or if there was a bad batch.

Well, I tried one of them last night. Seal didn't appear to be
broken. But the weirdest things happened.
Most of the cats I fed it to didn't like it. Go figure. It's a
senior formula, easy on the stomach, and most of these guys are
seniors. So what happens? Arthur, who's still a kitten (since he
isn't two yet), and who *hates* canned food, goes and nibbles on
Trill's senior Hill's! And Jack, one of the kittens, who gets Fancy
Feces and should *love* that, eschews it for -- of course -- the
Hill's senior food.

You're lucky ANY of your cats will eat any version of Hill's
at ALL! I've yet to have a cat who will eat the stuff -
even Patches, when he first adopted me, and would eat almost
anything put before him!
