I swear this cat has more control over her personal mass than any other
cat I've ever known.  Her preferred sleeping spot is on my side -
whichever one is up.  She isn't really a big thing and she makes herself
fit just perfectly so I don't even notice her while I sleep.  But woe
to me when I wake up and want to go to the bathroom.  My 9-10 pound cat
now weighs almost 50 and I cannot remove her from my side.  I turn, she
turns.  I push under her but, she stays put, but my hands get squished.
I of course am in no position to just pick up the sweet darling at
this point and just remove her, but I am afraid to, because the longer I
mess with her the her the heavier and more of an impediment she becomes
(and the more I HAVE to get to the bathroom).  My other cats don't do
this, so I know it is not a universal thing.  Do you have cats that turn
into rocks weighing 3-5 times more than their real weight at will?  Do
you have tips for picking up a 50 pound cat in the middle of the night?
 I am all ears.

LOL!  I can't figure out how Persia manages to take up half the king size
bed.  She's really not that big, 1/2 cup a day diet notwithstanding.  But I
find myself sleeping horizontally and waking up trying to figure out which
direction I'm facing (and where the heck is the bathroom in relation to my
position on the bed?).  It's interesting; they do manage to increase their
body mass when it comes time to sleep, or especially when it comes time for
us to get up to use our "litter box", thus disturbing their sleep.

LOL - yes. Roxy is adamant about sleeping on top of me, and she does
gain considerable weight during the night, which is a little scary since
she's not exactly starting out as a featherweight. No matter how much I
toss and turn, Roxy just "surfs" my body and the blankets. Once I've
settled into my new position, she makes herself comfy again.

I always wake up with an aching back, hips, legs, shoulders. I think
she's getting kickbacks from my chiropractor. :)

Yeah, that's Jimmer.  10+ by day, nearly infinite by night.
fortunately, he doesn't sleep on me, but he does take up residence
smakck in the middle of the bed while I'm asleep.  and the only human in
the queen-size bed has to sleep on the edge.  sigh.

For me, it's surprisingly my littlest, but I don't know her weight.
She and her brother are due for their 1 year old checkup this
month. I think she weighs more than Bonnie, who is a small framed,
slightly overweight 10 pounder. Scarlett is much taller and longer
than Bonnie, no fat bulges. She might end up weighing less than
Bonnie. But, she lays across my legs (how can that be
comfortable??) and I can't move.  LOL

Lately with the cold nights, I have all 4 cats in my bed with me
and I've been thinking I need to upgrade from a full size to a
king.

For me, it's Miranda, but she is pretty accommodating. If I want to
move, she moves along with me. She likes sleeping on my side, on top of
me, but if I turn to lay on my back, she snuggles against my side.
Sometimes, she lays on my legs, too. Nikki used to do that too.

But sometimes they do take up an amazing amount of space, and I find
myself hanging on to the edge of the bed in the morning. Here's an
example from when I had just got up after an afternoon nap:

Of course, the bed doesn't get that full now, without Frank, but Caliban
has grown a lot since that picture, and when he stretches out on the bed
he can cover quite a big area.

It won't help.  Four cats are perfectly capable of extending to
occupy all available sleeping spots in a king size bed.  Science
has not yet truly explained this property of feline biomass, but
any experienced cat slave can attest to it.

I've found that with Betty, I have a hard time telling that she's on
me.  At night, I have to actually pat myself on the chest to see if
she's there or not.  She's about 8 lbs.

I'm sure I could tell if she were the size of Sherry's grandkitty,

You should thank Sherry.  I wish she would jump in and tell us more
about Orion.  He sounds like a big baby - probably about four times
the size of Betty!

The next picture is also amusing.  There are actually three cats
sleeping with the hoomin (one of which is a bit hard to see):

Is this like "Where's Waldo"? I can't find the third cat! Is that a
cat squished under Orion? Next to Jamie's right arm? That's the only
thing that looks remotely like another cat to me.

I love the position of the orange cat's front paws.

I feel like I'm talking for Sherry, but yes, that's Roscoe's snout.
The orange cat is a polydactyl named Ernie.  They're both dwarfed by
Orion.

That tiny little thing? Is he a kitten?

That certainly is a large, contented cat.
